Defect refers to a military individual abandoning his post/oath/nation and joining a rival nation-state. An example would be, a USAF pilot taking his F-22 Raptor, entering Iranian airspace, informing them of his/her intentions, followed by being escorted to their airfield, landing, and surrendering his aircraft and himself to said rival entity. Civilians cannot 'defect.' Civilians can ask for asylum, where they escape their country of origin (usually to flee an oppressive dictatorship in search of freedom thought to be had in the rival nation), relocate to the country which they prefer to be a citizen of. You could for example, find the foreign embassy nearest to you, inform the ambassador of your grievances and intentions, and see if his superiors are willing to accept you.
Most countries though have their borders open to both emigration and immigration so you wouldn't need to do that. Any westerner seeking asylum is just being a drama queen for that reason.

If I wanted to be a civilian drama queen, I suppose I would go to the Iranians and ask for asylum because it would bring a lot of attention to me by the world media, and because I might manage to convince the Iranians to provide me with a job which pays in more-so sound currency, has better stability, than those in the US. Possibly could generally ask for a bribe to do it, since it would be great PR for them. "American flees tyrannical dictatorship, comes to Iran for freedom and prosperity."
If I was going to defect, I suppose Iran would still be the best nation to defect to, for the same reasons. Plus, Iran would have whatever technology I brought with me, so they would be gaining much much more. Which, drama queen/materialistically/narcissistically speaking, would be better for the defector as they would like the defector more and provide the defector with more.

You should defect to North Korea, or Burma.
Be prepared to be tortured a lot, though, before they finally grant you citizenship, and a monthly rice ration.

Traditionally,
Americans have defected to Canada, Holland, Denmark and other democracies.
Russia got badly burned with cia plants pretending to defect during the phony conflict called the cold war, they they will accept Americans today.
Ukraine is a good choice.
They decided to stop being the 3rd largest nuclear superpower after ehr Soviet Union broke up, and sold their entire stockpile of nukes to Bill Clinton, so they are a good choice for those who want to avoid wars.
Central and south American countries and pacific nations such as Fiji and New Zealand increasingly try to discourage deadbeat Americans.
You must have a ticket out ot the country on hand to enter and have proof of income.
Guatemalaa and other us puppet rw dictatorships love Americans (they have no choice)
Do a web search for "gringo rivera" to find a long list of countries with expatriot Americans in residence.
Many Americans overseas often claim to be Canadians;
Kinda like how Germans of 3/4 a century back claimed to be Austrians or Swiss.
If you are seeking to escape American government influence,
there really is no place to go.
My advice is to be very law abiding.
Remember Freedom of speech is increasingly becoming merely Freedom to agree with the vocal minority so,
Don't criticize Israel the US government nor Obama and the US is still a great place to live. |

Look, OP, be intelligent. Go to www.escapeartist.com, or expatriate usa, and look at your options. Belize is fabulous, but you need your own source of income because no jobs, and Costa Rica is nice, mostly Enlish Speaking. Argentina is friendly with strangers, but has a lot of internal strife.

You can defect right now to the Lakota Nation and not even leave home. Just renounce American citizenship and a Lakota passport and driver's license will be issued to you. You will no longer have to pay US taxes either.
