Gulf of Mexico mystery
Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Scientists are worried Siratti Sam could also become a casualty.
About 20 dead sea turtles have washed ashore in Pinellas County in the past three days, an extremely high number that has doctors and scientists puzzled.

One of the two survivors thatīs being kept at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a large, loggerhead turtle named Siratti Sam.

"I still donīt know if heīll make it," said Dr. Janine Cianciolo. "Itīs little movements. Yesterday, he wasnīt moving at all. [Heīs] still not in water because heīs not keeping his head above water for long enough periods of time."

Itīs not clear why the various kinds of sea turtles are washing ashore.

"It may or may not be associated with red tide," said Cianciolo. "They tend to show symptoms of whatīs called a red tide intoxication, but you have to take a lot of samples and they must go through testing to actually determine that."

Dive instructor Michael Miller took underwater video to try to figure out the mystery.

"Right now, anywhere we go from shore to 20 miles offshore, from Sarasota to Tarpon Springs, we canīt find a single creature alive on the bottom right now," said Miller.

Miller says heīs never seen such death and devastation under water in his 20 years of diving.

"All the coral, all the sponges, all the crabs, not a single living thing, all the star fish, the brittle stars, everythingīs dead," said Miller.

The sea turtles that died are being preserved with ice at the aquarium, where a necropsy will be performed in hopes it will provide some clues as to whatīs lurking in the waters of the gulf.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission scientists will ultimately decide whether red tide is causing the sea turtles to die. The results from the test could take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

If you see a dead or injured sea turtle, call the 24-hour stranded sea turtle hotline at 727-441-1790. Youīll be asked to leave a message with a phone number so rescuers can respond to the appropriate location.

BTW can anyone refresh my memory. What was the location of the parade of fish moving off the coast of Florida? How long was this line of fish?

The fish parade was down around the SW area of Florida. Which is probably why they canīt find any sea life. They all left.

The Red Tide was reported to extend 20 miles out also...

Letīs see, there is a Red Tide extending 20 miles out. All the living fish and creatures mobile enough to leave did. The turtles are showing signs of Red Tide intoxication. All the creatures remaining within the area are dead. They have never seen a Red Tide this big. They have never seen an area with this much destruction. Hmmm, I just canīt figure out what is going on....

People just love a mystery. So much so, that they make them out of things which have already been explained.

Mystery odor
Thursday, July 28, 2005

McCarty and other officials canīt explain the odor.
Many Pinellas County residents are wondering whatīs causing an awful smell.

Some attribute it to red tide, while others say itīs from a gas leak.

The situation started Thursday morning when Pinellas Emergency Services received several phone calls from people saying they smelled propane in Largo, Madeira Beach and Seminole. Seminole Fire Rescue responded to the calls.

"There is a heavy odor in the area," said Allison McCarty with Seminole Fire Rescue. "We have responded to all the 911 calls, as we are supposed to. We have an actual gas meter that we can detect the air quality [with]. And thereīs no reading of any gas in the area. Thereīs no propane, although it smells like it. It appears that [itīs] something related to the gulf, something coming in off the gulf."

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it hasnīt received any odor complaints in the area.

when i lived in this area i could not take being near the beach when the red tide was running... unbearable odor, seemed very hard to breath also.
what is happening is the red tide depleteīs the oxygen content of the water, that is why the water is dead and the fish are leaving, there is no oxygen in the water, or not enough anyway...just my thought

It figures Armageddon would start where I live!
Itīs sickening! I absolutly love turtles and have had them as pets for years.
I watched as a loggerhead mother came up to Turtle beach and lay eggs.
So big and yet so gentle...you can stroke them on the head while they are on land, and they act like the love it.
Turtles are very underestimated in intellect.
