Laptop/computer question
Ok, I dug out a laptop for my son to use while he is at my house.

It has a set of fax modems, thats how old it is....

Is there any way I can configure the USB port to carry the internet from the USB on my computer?

I just dont want to go buy a new wireless card, or modem for a 10 year old laptop, thats all.

Hes only 9 and just wants to play some gammes and stuff.

It has windows M/E on it, 2 USB ports, serial ports, etc...no cat5/ethernet plugs, so I figured the USB may be the best bet for this?

Re: Laptop/computer question
Put a version of Linux on it. You'd be better off than having ME (which went out with the Ark).

Re: Laptop/computer question
As per your indications...

You need to purchase a PMCIA card with a nic on the end.

Else

You can purchase a usb to nic device.

PLEASE NOTE:

Before you actually purchase anything, "make sure it is win 98 M.E. compatible
.

You may find there are issues with getting stuff that is that far back compatible...

Just saying...

You say it doesn't have an Ethernet port? Really?

Re: Laptop/computer question
if it runs ME it should handle XP. then you have a better chance of supported hardware...

ME was a joke. a bad one.. windows ME will crash all by itself. like a built in feature. just be sittin there all happy with a screensaver and then POOF. its gone... might as well go back to 98. hell even 95, 3.11 is better than ME.

To get XP to work properly he'll have to go out and buy a license, and spend part of a day installing the thing, and putting up with the hassle of tuning the system manually (drivers etc). All for a kid who wants to play games. I wouldn't waste my time to be honest, and let's remember, XP is sooooo last decade.

Yeah, no ethernet port anywhere.

I have an "a" to "a" usb cable, and have it linked now.

My PC sees it, but the laptop dont see the PC, the fax modem cards have a small plug/hole in them, kinda strange looking.

Im kinda proficient with exploring and changing settings, but Im really lost with this one.

Thank you all for helping me, too.

My son will really thank you if I can get this to work for him.

Gonna check out that google link someone posted, BRB

Re: Laptop/computer question
Get a router if you don't already have one. Then just add the laptop using a network cable.
