Anonymous Coward User ID: 1160448 Netherlands 01/06/2011 07:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "The tilting of the earth changes everything" Arguably, the most bizarre, fascinating and perhaps groundbreaking of all observations we've heard from Inuit is that they believe our world has tilted on its axis and this contributes to climate change. When Zacharias and I first heard this, we thought it was very strange, yet elders in all the communities we've worked in - Pangnirtung, Iqaluit, Resolute Bay and Igloolik - all believe this phenomenon to be true. "We still have a daylight and there's still blue, green, red down there — there's sun sign still," said Zipporah Ootooq Aronsen, who lives in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. "It's not usually like that." People in Resolute Bay now sometimes see a distant island that in the past was only visible during daylight hours. "It never happened like that before," Aronsen said. "Now we can see it once in a while, when it's a clear day." [link to www.cbc.ca] |

I'm trying to find out if we are going to be the new equator, sorry Europe you are going to be the new North Pole. Sweet does that mean NE United States will be the equator?!! Don't know if my skin can handle that much sun, LOL. Quoting: TM62Great find on the story, now they are admitting to it, fantastic! It's slipping thats all, it hasn't shifted yet so best to just sit tight and see what happens. |

According to the New York Post, while it wouldn’t bring on the destruction of Earth, it would in fact change things like which direction vultures circle in, where animals prefer to live and move their herds to, birds flying south for the summer and north for the winter and things of that nature. Nothing too bad right? nothing too bad nothing |

The article describes in detail the impact on the airport and the changes it is forced to make to the runways to accomodate the magnetic shift. But nary a mention of why the shift is occuring or if it is even something to be worried about. You'd think by reading this article that it was a normal occurence. "Yeah Martha, I know the sky is falling...but what's for dinner tonight? I'm really starving." |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1215618 United States 01/06/2011 08:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Runway designations change over time because the magnetic poles slowly drift on the Earth's surface and the magnetic bearing will change. Depending on the airport location and how much drift takes place, it may be necessary over time to change the runway designation. As runways are designated with headings rounded to the nearest 10 degrees, this will affect some runways more than others. For example, if the magnetic heading of a runway is 233 degrees, it would be designated Runway 23. If the magnetic heading changed downwards by 5 degrees to 228, the Runway would still be Runway 23. If on the other hand the original magnetic heading was 226 (Runway 23), and the heading decreased by only 2 degrees to 224, the runway should become Runway 22. Because the drift itself is quite slow, runway designation changes are uncommon, and not welcomed, as they require an accompanying change in aeronautical charts and descriptive documents. When runway designations do change, especially at major airports, it is often changed overnight as taxiway signs need to be changed and the huge numbers at each end of the runway need to be repainted to the new runway designators. In July 2009 for example, London Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom changed its runway designations from 05/23 to 04/22 overnight." [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
