Good night all! “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan |

I don't think this has been posted yet, there is a new CME that is on course for a direct hit on Earth [link to iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov:8080] yes it is .... hmmm wonder what that's from ??? Maybe the C1.7 from 00:48 this morning [link to www.lmsal.com] [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] nothing on Cactus for it yet ... Cactus just updated, looks like a HALO III this morning [link to www.sidc.oma.be] How'd y'all let this one get by ya, hehe? :12/5CME: I've been preoccupied rebuilding my computer files :(} and having wireless trouble too. Good work on tracking down the CACTus link. I'd give a 50-50 chance for geoeffectiveness (if it was from the west side I'd say "Bank on it"). I checked and didn't see any CME arrival prediction from Goddard. Either way, we don't have long to wait as the eruption was over 24-hrs. ago (it's halfway here already). Try to follow up on that big southern filament liftoff; if doesn't go too far south of the ecliptic we could see a nice CME comin' our way. I'm hopin' for some action soon. The X-ray flux is flirting with A-levels! Wasn't it only 2 weeks ago we saw the highest SS# of the cycle? Old Sol sure is getting moody in his old age, haha. |

You can clearly see the progress of the pole reversal. The south pole's equatorward latitudes have weakened from around +25 uT in fall 2011 to around 0 uT this fall. The north pole's polemost latitudes have weakened from -35 uT to 0 uT during the same period. We can also see that the equatorward latitudes of the north pole have strengthened greatly since last year, after having capped out at +10 uT the last two springs, readings have already matched that high and we are still months away from spring, when the readings will max out! All in all very promising signs from both poles that this jammed reversal is beginning to figure itself out. Isis One User ID: 14343270 United States 12/05/2012 11:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Earth's Radiation Belts Surprisingly Dynamic, New Probes Find Quoting: joinca Two new NASA probes that are flying through the belts of radiation surrounding Earth have found that these regions change more rapidly than previously thought. The Van Allen Probes — a pair of twin spacecraft formerly known as the Radiation Belt Storm Probes — launched Aug. 30, and turned on their instruments two days later. Since then, the spacecraft have returned unprecedented measurements of the zones of charged particles, called the Van Allen radiation belts, around our planet. In these zones, trillions of high-energy particles released by the sun are trapped by Earth's magnetic field. The full article is here: [link to www.space.com] Thank you for the update joinca, I have been looking forward to hearing about their observations. I have a telescope, and when you are trying to focus in on something sometimes that piece with the cross bars shows up and looks like that object she pointed out in the video. Yes, it's a reflection caused by bright stars, of a part called a "spider" that holds the secondary mirror in place above a telescope. If you look at the video again you'll see that the stars behind this "object" are visible. You wouldn't see them if it were solid mass. This artifact often appears near the edge of a photographic plate. I only know this because I totally freaked when I first saw one and researched it...it looks pretty darn frightening. Maybe because I hate spiders. I freak when I see them too. And I was so hoping for that video to be something legitimate! Looking at the dark space casting an imprint in to the visible plasma gives a different perspective, to me it looked similar to one of the circular symbols that were in Hugh's video. |

To add to this mystery, SOLEN has not even acknowledged an incoming CME December 3-5: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery. [link to www.solen.info] And neither has NASA IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet levels for the next three days (06 Dec, 07 Dec, 08 Dec). Hugh M Eye User ID: 24287942 United States 12/06/2012 11:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SIDC has some comments on yesterday's CME- COMMENT: There were no C-class flares reported during last 34 hours. The C-class flares are possible but not probable. A partial halo CME was detected by SOHO/LASCO on December 5. The CME was first observed in the SOHO/LASCO C2 field of view at about 00:36 UT, had angular width of about 210 degrees, projected speed around 750 km/s and was directed somewhat eastward of the Sun-Earth line. It was associated with C1.7 flare from the Catania sunspot group 41 (NOAA AR 1528) situated close to the East solar limb. The Earth is currently inside of the slow (320 km/s) solar wind. The interplanetary magnetic field magnitude is stable and has value of about 3 nT. We expect quiet geomagnetic conditions in the following hours. The arrival of a CME-driven shock associated with the partial-halo CME from December 5 is expected late on December 7 or early on December 8, and it might result in active geomagnetic conditions. [link to sidc.oma.be] We may have another CME (probably from that prominence liftoff) seen on STEREO Ahead movie (it was faintly detectable on Behind also): [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] :12/6cme: |
