So what your saying is...they put super reactive fuel in these things...way beyond the normal reaction levels usually used...and now they have no way to stop it??

Yes, look at the articles, at the time of the shipment, local residents were all against, protesting. Many critical reports were written, demonstrations...

It is now, like having a nuclear grade weapons explosion contained in the reactor's core, with no water possibility to cool it down, to answer you, my friend.

I'm skeptical that the plutonium elements would go bang like an atomic bomb, apparently it's hard to get an atomic bomb to go bang, but plutonium is a pretty scary element.

If vaporized and spread over a large area it has the potential to effectively 'salt the earth' from human occupation for a very long time.

Agree, however, we have never had such a situation before, the trigger might simply be the heat itself

Spent nuclear fuel from normal light water reactors contains Plutonium, but it is a mixture of Plutonium-242, 240, 239 and 238. The mixture is not sufficiently enriched for efficient nuclear weapons, but can be used once as MOX fuel, that changes the very nature of the fuel, in an accident such as the one in FUKUSHIMA, no one is able to tell the reaction if the core melts, and we have nuclear fusion within the containment vessel.

Re: SECRET SHIPMENT OF PLUTONIUM FROM EUROPE TO JAPAN LED TO PLANT EXPLOSION
The security, safety, and economics of MOX fuel use have long been questioned by many experts in France. In November 1990, when the decision was made to build the Melox plant, Jean-Paul Schapira, a well-known nuclear physicist questioned the value of MOX use in the journal La Recherche.1 Recently, in the Gazette Nucléaire, Monique Sené of the GSIEN (Association of Scientists for Nuclear Energy Information), shows that the objections raised by J.P. Schapira have been borne out by the MOX fuel assemblies that have been used by EDF.2

Schapira and Sené identify a number of safety problems posed by MOX compared to traditional uranium fuel which it replaces: more delicate fabrication of fuel rods to protect against contamination, greater risk of loss of control during reactor operation despite the presence of extra control rods, release of fission gases, corrosion of fuel rods during reactor operation. Given the signs of aging which are now appearing in the French 900 MW reactors, these complications are all the more problematic.

Japan nuke plant starts using controversial MOX fuel
November 5, 2009, 2:45pm
TOKYO, November 5, 2009 (AFP) - A Japanese nuclear power plant on Thursday started using recycled mixed-oxide or MOX fuel from a controversial shipment from France that arrived in the country amid protests in May.

The 1.18-million-kilowatt reactor is expected to reach the state of nuclear chain reaction overnight and generate power ship in May amid international protests led by environmental group Greenpeace, which has called for an immediate ban on MOX shipments.

The MOX ship took a secret route and travelled under armed guard.

The protesters argue that shipping MOX around the world represents an unacceptable risk because of the danger of an accident or a terrorist attack.

Greenpeace also warns that the widening use of MOX increases the dangers of nuclear proliferation, arguing that the plutonium in it is easier to extract for weapons use than the plutonium in conventional spent nuclear fuel.

Now, to shorten the discussion, this is what's happening.

MOX fuel, (plutonium from dismantled nuclear weapons), is a hundred times more difficult to cool than tradition fuel.

The critical mass is attained at an exponentially pace.

SECRET SHIPMENT OF NUCLEAR BOMB MATERIAL FROM
EUROPE TO JAPAN

OVER the next few weeks, two ships carrying a secret cargo of dangerous, nuclear weapons-usable plutonium fuel will leave ports in Britain and France and sail around the globe to Japan. On board will be fuel containing more plutonium than in the entire Indian and Pakistani nuclear weapons programmes.(1)

The two British flagged vessels, the Pacific Teal and the Pacific Pintail, will leave Barrow in Britain and Cherbourg in France carrying the first commercial shipment to Japan of mixed-oxide (MOX) reactor fuel, made from plutonium and uranium. An estimated 446 kilograms of plutonium is contained in the 40 nuclear fuel elements – enough fissile material to construct 60 nuclear bombs. T

The first plant to use MOX is scheduled to be Fukushima 1, plant. The date has been set to August 22nd, 2010.

ROUTE OF PLUTONIUM FUEL (MOX) SHIPMENT KEPT SECRET
THE plutonium (MOX) fuel shipment is being conducted for the Japanese electrical utilities Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) (Fukushima 1.2) .

To answer you:
They used dismantled nuclear weapons, notably start 1 and 2, in order to extract the plutonium, or MOX, the very fuel used in the Fukushima power plant. Now, amid protests and warnings, they went on. Now, they cannot stop the nuclear fusion which has begun in the core of the plant, the heat is getting stronger and stronger inside, with no water to cool it. If they do not succeed, no one knows the outcome.

About the protests, here is an example

Lawsuit to Stop the Use of MOX Fuel

The plaintiffs' claim there is a danger that the reactor vessel could be destroyed for the following reasons: when MOX fuel is in use a space can easily form between the fuel and the cladding; fuel at high temperature melts; as a result of pressure damage to pipes can occur. Additionally, a disposal method for spent MOX fuel has not been established. They pointed out that if MOX is stored long-term, a crack in the storage pool could release radioactively contaminated water.

Re: SECRET SHIPMENT OF PLUTONIUM FROM EUROPE TO JAPAN LED TO PLANT EXPLOSION
Please read articles carefully:

[link to www.japantoday.com]

"The No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 plant would be the third in Japan to be used for the so-called pluthermal generation, but the only one among the three to have been subjected to antiaging treatment with 34 years since its launch. Pluthermal output has already begun at the No. 3 reactor of Kyushu Electric Power Co’s Genkai plant in Saga Prefecture and the No. 3 reactor of Shikoku Electric Power Co’s Ikata plant in Ehime Prefecture."

In other words, only three reactors in all of japan were using MOX fuel as of Aug 22, 2010, the date of that article. The only reactor at Fukushima Daiichi with MOX is #3 which so far has not been reported to have problems. #1 is the problem child, and #2 is reported to be headed down a similar path, potentially.

I'm panicking just as much as anyone, but let's try to use our collective, cool heads.

God Almighty.

If any of these reactors go super-critical with Plutonium cores, and the containment vessel is ruptured, releasing even several kilograms of PU could conceivably KILL A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE SURFACE OF THE PLANET.
