When I clicked the link it is saying 6/2(1X2) Fix teh equation above it. It gives 9. Website you posted definately shows 9 as answer. Can anyone give me a website that will show how to work the problem that comes up with 1? Anyone? Last Edited by Forgotten on 01/18/2013 08:44 AM Forgotten: Reach me at [email protected] |

I have found calcs and sites and profs that say both. I originally said 1 and am just sticking to it out of spite, lol. And the fact that it is more of a poorly written expression than anything, there are good arguments for both, imo. |
Forgotten User ID: 1448291 United States 01/18/2013 08:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Talked to my friend... Apparently left to right is NOT part of the order of operations.... apparently you do not have to work left to right, as it should not matter... he also said the answer is 1... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31557420 I found this as well... this guy is not my friend. This "scientist" said he would accept both answers. Every program I put the equation into gives me the answer of 9. *shrug* I would argue that it is 6/2(1+2) 6/2 distribute into (1+2)= 9 Until someone can show me a website that will do this and give an answer of 1, I am sticking with 9. [link to imageshack.us] I copied and pasted the equation into that math program and hit solve. Then I hit, show steps. 4 other programs give me an answer of 9. Quoting: Bent So replace the op divide symbol with a slash and do the problem. You get: 6/2(1+2) The 6 is the numerator (on top), and the denominator is 2(1+2) (on bottom) 6/6=1 Just tried 9 different online math problem sites. I have not searched any online calcs again yet, but here is why I say 1. 6÷2(1+2) 6÷2(3) 6÷6 = 1 Or 6÷2(1+2) distribute 2(1+2) = 2+4 = 6 6÷6 = 1 Now I understand some will argue you should not distribute first. But according to those using their pedmas that is p, right? Oh, order of ops, lol. Last Edited by Patrick Bateman on 01/18/2013 09:04 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 32415920 United States 01/18/2013 09:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The brackets give not only priority to 1+2, but also to the multiplication bound to the bracketed expression, so it's 6/6=1. At least that's how we do it here... and I suppose math rules are international. If we can't trust Germans on math, who the fuck can we trust? That's not sarcasm, that's my opinion. |
