Anonymous Coward User ID: 1309528 United States 05/03/2011 08:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It IS a trick question because the arithmetic layout is ambiguous. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13680466÷[2(1+2)] = 1 (6÷2)(1+2) = 9 It's not a difficult problem, it's just laid out wrong. The question is deliberately ambiguous and that people get different answers is of no surprise. Misleading information is misleading. Seriously, This is a great thread BTW, it really shows just how stupid many people on here are. The fluoride pills must be working really well. Why are people worried about a little extra radiation if they cant even do arithmetic? |

Quoting: patmac 1130776Well done! 1.) OP posts an initial question 2.) Correct answer is given within the first 3 posts 3.) Everyone continues to call eachother an idiot, wrong answers are given 4.) An argument about the process is discussed 5.) Someone goes to google 6.) Everyone then switches their answer to what google says 7.) The arguing continues on for several more pages Nice. Bottom line, without computers most of them retrun to the stone age... |

You solve whats in the parentheses, then you calculate the rest with the result from the number in parentheses. Same as (6÷2) x (1+2). The parentheses means multiply. Wow, you posted the original expression and you don't even know the answer? You think it's not 9??? Order of operations means division is evaluated before multiplication. 6÷2(1+2) 3(1+2) 3(3) 9 I mean, you can even type it into google and it will tell you 9. What the heck is wrong with you people??? [link to www.google.com] |

The answer, ONLY answer, is 9. Most people really don't have the need for math, other than very basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Yes, I know that that is what this is, but when written in the form of an equation it gets people confused. For the majority of people it is just not that important in life. |
