Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
Apparently even the OP didnt know the correct answer. If we rewrite the problem in a different format, I bet many including the OP might get the proper answer.

Instead of writing it: 6÷2(1+2)

Lets try making it more simple for people to read: 6÷2*(1+2)

They are exactly the same problem and the answer to both is 9.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
The order of operations is the order in which all algebraic expressions should be simplified. Oftentimes, the meaning of a complex expression changes depending upon the order in which it is calculated. The order of operations is:
Parentheses
Exponents (and Roots)
Multiplication & Division
Addition & Subtraction
This means that expressions within parentheses are evaluated first, then exponents (including roots, i.e. radicals), then multiplication and division (at the same level), and finally addition and subtraction (at the same level). If there are multiple operations at the same level on the order of operations, move from left to right.Whichever mnemonic you use, be aware that multiplication does not always come before division
1) 1+2=3
2) 6:2=3
3) 3x3=9
6 ÷ 2 (1 +2) = 9

There are 6 cakes

2 mothers each have 1 son and 2 daughters

How many cakes for each kid?

6 cakes / 2 mums (1 son + daughters)
6 cakes / 2 mums (3 kids)
6 cakes / 6 kids
1 cake / kid
We're all pawns, you know!

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
What people forget is PEMDAS needs to be applied Left to right.

Rules

1. Calculations must be done from left to right.

2. Calculations in brackets (parenthesis) are done first. When you have more than one set of brackets, do the inner brackets first.

3. Exponents (or radicals) must be done next.

4. Multiply and divide in the order the operations occur.

5. Add and subtract in the order the operations occur.

So 6÷2(1+2) = ?

First in order is (1+2) which equals 3
so now you have
6÷2*3=?
Now remember it is done from left to right so even though in PEMDAS multiplications comes first... in the problem at had starting at the 6 and working left to right the division comes first so then you divide 6÷2=3
So now you have 3*3 which equals 9.

So 9 is the correct answer and if you come up with 1 as an answer you need to remember it is left to right

It IS a trick question because the arithmetic layout is ambiguous.

6÷[2(1+2)] = 1

(6÷2)(1+2) = 9

It's not a difficult problem, it's just laid out wrong.

The question is deliberately ambiguous and that people get different answers is of no surprise.

Law of distribution, you need to know more then basic pemdas to do anything in life yo's...

whenever you have multiplication of terms being added you must multiply each term by the multiplicand,

i.e. 2(1+2) = (2*1 + 2*2) = (2+4) = 6

so

6/2(1+2)
6/(2*1 + 2*2)
6/(2 + 4)

Before calling me retarded, you should realize that what you are saying has nothing to do with the calculation.

2(1+2) is not a unit. It should read 6 / 2 x (1 + 2)

I did a bit of googling around and 9 is the correct answer to this problem, so looks like I'm not that retarded after all.

But you are assuming it's a mathematical distribution problem, giving a potentially a wrong answer. The answer is conditional upon operator precedence rules applied - and without explicit operator precedence specification, then the result is ambiguous and non-deterministic.

This is like arguing the truth value of a question with little circumstance. As I read through the posts it is clear that math inhibits our ability to act humane. Some of us are taught one or two rules differently than others, or our memories serve us better...anyways...the matter of a correct answer is not relevant, this is 2012 if you get upset over people getting math problems wrong on a conspiracy forum...you might be a bit neurotic. Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
Isn't 6÷2(1+2) the same as saying 6 is divided by everything behind the division symbol such as: 6/2(1+3)

6
___ =

2(1+3)

6
___
2(3) or 2*3

6
_ = 1

6

If you are getting the answer 9, it seems that you are forgetting to simplify. For example: 6÷2*3 is not 3*3, it's 3÷3 or 3/3. When you look at it as a fraction, it should become easier.

6÷2(1+2)same as 6/2(1+2)
6÷2*3 same as 6/2*3
6÷6 same as 6/6. Note: You don't divide 6 by 2 first. Multiply 2 and 3 first then divide. Order of operation still apply.

If you are getting 12 or -4, I don't know what the fuck you are doing.
