Imported rice now pricier than domestic rice
Imported rice is now more expensive than some types of domestically grown rice, because of the rising demand in the restaurant industry for foreign-sourced material due to the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant last year.

One supermarket chain responded by offering rice from China at an eye-catchingly low price--and watched stocks fly from the shelves.

During talks in the 1993 Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, Japan was forced to open its markets to imported rice. It now imports 770,000 tons annually, of which 100,000 tons is considered staple food, whose price is decided through bidding.

In an auction on Nov. 6, there were buyers for more than 3.5 times the volume of rice on offer. Chinese rice reached a price of 312 yen ($3.90) per kilogram and rice from the United States sold for 310 yen.

It was a rise of 40 percent on the same time of year in 2011, when prices were 221 yen and 223 yen respectively.

No radioactivity found in Fukushima mothers' breast milk
No radioactive cesium was detected in tests on the breast milk of mothers in Fukushima Prefecture, authorities said Nov. 5, adding that fewer women than expected offered samples.
-----
The prefecture tested breast milk from 378 mothers among the 703 who received counseling by the end of October. It said all samples indicated levels lower than the detection limit of radioactive cesium, 2 becquerels per kilogram.

Disposable radioactive sludge remains
At least 130,000 tons of radioactive ash and sludge that could be disposed of along with regular waste remain in Fukushima and 4 surrounding prefectures in Japan in the wake of last year's nuclear accident.

NHK learned of this in its coverage of Fukushima and 8 nearby prefectures.

The government is responsible for disposing of radioactive ash and sludge if its level of radioactive cesium exceeds 8,000 becquerels per kilogram. Ash and sludge under that level is to be buried by municipalities along with other types of waste.

NHK's survey found that ash was continuing to pile up in 5 prefectures even though its radioactive readings fall below the level.
Fukushima Prefecture has the most at 70,000 tons, followed by Niigata Prefecture at 56,000 tons.

China nuclear reactor approval process back to normal-CNNC

Nov 9 - China's approval process for nuclear reactors is now back to normal following the publication of new guidelines for the sector late in October, the chairman of China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) said on Friday.

Sun Qin told reporters on the sidelines of the ruling Communist Party's congress in Beijing that the suspension of new reactor approvals by the State Council, China's cabinet, was "basically unfrozen", adding that it would still take time before new nuclear projects were given the go-ahead.

S.Korea watchdog finds cracks in nuclear reactor

South Korea said on Friday minor cracks were found at a nuclear reactor that have not caused a leak but still mean the facility will be kept offline, prompting fears of power shortages in the coming winter.

The cracks were found during maintenance work on control rod tubes at a unit in the Yeonggwang nuclear complex, where two other reactors were recently shut down for several months to replace unvetted components.

Half of Yeonggwang's six reactors will now be offline until January at the earliest, the country's nuclear watchdog said, raising concerns of a pinch in power supply during the harsh winter months.

TEPCO chief willing to help nuclear crisis evacuees

Tokyo Electric Power Co. President Naomi Hirose said he personally may engage in work to clean houses owned by people forced to evacuate by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster last year.

As part of its efforts to take responsibility for the troubles caused by the nuclear crisis, the utility announced Wednesday that all of its 38,000 employees will take turns to go to Fukushima Prefecture and engage in work to revitalize the disaster-hit areas in northeastern Japan.

"It is important that our employees understand the actual situation in Fukushima through their own experience. We should share the work we can, including me," the president of the company now under state control told Kyodo News.

Tsunami debris may reach US next month
The massive debris from the tsunami that hit northeastern Japan last year may reach North America's west coast in December. Japan's Environment Ministry says that's two months later than previously predicted.

An estimated 1.5 million tons of debris from the tsunami is drifting in the ocean. Some of it has already reached the Pacific coast of North America.

The ministry has commissioned groups of researchers at Kyoto University and other institutions to analyze the debris' movement.

They predict that about 33,000 tons of household debris will have reached North America by next June.

Cartoon bird warns children of radiation

A grinning bird mascot has been enlisted to teach Japanese children in Fukushima how to stay safe from the radiation that escaped from the region’s crippled nuclear power plant. Kibitan—a plump, yellow cartoon character with stubby wings and boots—is warning youngsters to stay away from puddles and ditches, where radioactive particles accumulate.... Reactor meltdowns in the days after the earthquake-sparked tsunami spread radiation over a wide area and left swathes of agricultural land unfarmable.
The natural disaster left around 19,000 people dead or missing, while no one is officially recorded as having died as a direct result of the nuclear catastrophe.
Scientists caution that decommissioning the plant and making some areas habitable could take decades. ...Environmental campaign group Greenpeace charged last month that heavily- populated areas several dozen kilometres from the plant have radiation levels as much as 13 times the legal limit.
