Life of Hunterston nuclear power plant to be extended by seven years
[link to www.scotsman.com]

[snip]

ONE of the UK ’s oldest nuclear power stations has been allowed to operate in Scotland for another seven years.

Patrick Harvie MSP, Scottish Green Party co-convener, said: “ This extension shows how light touch regulation is failing us and the Scottish Government shouldn’t just wave it through.

“The Scottish Parliament has voted against new nuclear, and it’s clear our renewables targets are achievable. Why on earth would we allow EDF to increase our toxic waste legacy and continue the risks of running a plant built in the 60s?”

TEPCO considers net in nuke plant port to prevent irradiated fish from heading seaward
[link to ajw.asahi.com]

[snip]

Sources said the company is considering setting up a 2-kilometer net at the mouth of the port and along the inside of the port’s levees. The measure would be accompanied with dredging of mud in the port.

A similar net was rigged up in 1974 in Minamata Bay to prevent mercury-tainted fish from spreading outside the bay.

“We have been asking TEPCO to close the port after receiving data showing high levels of contamination,” said an official at a local fisheries cooperative. "There are openable nets that will allow dredgers to enter. TEPCO's response is too slow.”

Cosmic radio waves mimic chirping of 'alien birds'
[link to www.nctimes.com]

[snip]

University of Iowa physicist Craig Kletzing played a recording of these high-pitched radio waves at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

"Not only do you hear the chirps _ the alien birds as my wife calls them _ but you hear that sort of cricket-like thing in the background," Kletzing told reporters.

Before, those background sounds were inaudible.

"So this is really a fantastic new measurement," he said.

Social media goes nuclear for NRC, Seabrook
[link to www.gloucestertimes.com]

[snip]

National regulators and those involved in the nuclear industry say monitoring social media to ensure the public gets accurate information has become an essential part of their work.

“When events like this happen, we have someone here monitoring social media,” Sheehan said. “We monitor for rumor control to stop erroneous information from getting out so as not to scare the public.”

Situations such as these are why Seabrook Station’s parent company, NextEra, located in Juno Beach, Fla., now has people within its communications team monitoring social media and correcting misinformation when needed.

More U.S. Kids Get High-Radiation Scans, Study Says
[link to news.health.com]

[snip]

Increasing numbers of U.S. children undergo diagnostic imaging tests such as MRIs and CT scans, and higher-radiation tests account for a growing proportion of these procedures, researchers report.

Their study of 2001-2009 insurance claims in southern California found that high-radiation procedures, which could raise the risk of cancer years later, are most commonly ordered for hospitalized children or those seen in emergency departments because of abdominal pain, headache and head injury.

Overall, physicians affiliated with a pediatric hospital in San Diego ordered 200,000 diagnostic tests using radiation for 63,000 children during the period reviewed, the researchers said. Almost 8,000 of the children had higher-radiation procedures, such as CT scans, angiography (x-ray of the inside of blood vessels) and/or fluoroscopy (moving images).

Older children and boys were more likely than younger kids and girls to undergo these tests, the study said.

Mysterious radiation event of 774 might be (a little) less mysterious
[link to arstechnica.com]

[snip]

Calculations that ruled out solar flare were done incorrectly.

As for whatever appears to have occurred in 774, all options are back on the table. If there was a significant event, and it was caused by a massive solar flare, it would behoove us to learn all we can about it. While the effects back in 774 could have been a bit unpleasant, folks then didn’t rely on digital infrastructure and a global communication network, so it wouldn't have been as disruptive.

A Few Things Ill Considered

--snip--

Originally I was going to write a “What Do We Know” section with information I pulled from old AWOGWN issues, but then I asked myself…

What do we want to know?

1 How long until the four Fukushima plants can be completely decommisioned?
2 How far has the melted nuclear material [corium] penetrated into the base concrete or into the earth?
3 What are the health effects on the local and the non-local populations?
4 What is the danger of low level radiactive material bio-accumulating in the human food chain?
5 When can the Fukushima prefecture people go home?
6 What precisely is the source of the elevated radioactive material in the ocean nearby?
7 What is the danger of radioactive fish in other parts of the Pacific?

Which simplified my task considerably, because as far as I know the answers are…

1 Unknown.
2 Unknown.
3 Uncertain [likely will only be revealed in decades].
4 Uncertain.
5 Unknown [see #1].
6 Leaking reactors bathed by sea water [despite what TEPCO says].
7 Uncertain

Survey: Mismanagement seen at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant
Nearly half the workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant reported receiving payment from firms other than those giving them work assignments, according to a recent survey, Zee News reports.

More than 15 percent said they did not know how much radiation they had been exposed to, and 36 percent reported never having received documents describing their terms of employment. Over 100 respondents reported being asked to lie about their employer when filling out the survey.
