The widely held notion that Antarctica has no earthquakes is wrong, say Chinese scientists whose seismic station on the continent has recorded numerous tremors. “China’s newly built seismic observatory in Great Wall Station has documented a hundred-odd earthquakes occurring in the region over the past year,” Chang Lijun, a member of China’s 28th Antarctic expedition team, told China’s officials Xinhua news agency Thursday. $$$$

Geothermal energy developers plan to pump 24 million gallons of water into the side of a dormant volcano in Central Oregon this summer to demonstrate new technology they hope will give a boost to a green energy sector that has yet to live up to its promise. They hope the water comes back to the surface fast enough and hot enough to create cheap, clean electricity that isn’t dependent on sunny skies or stiff breezes — without shaking the earth and rattling the nerves of nearby residents. $$$$$

25 volcanoes in Indonesia now showing signs of abnormal activity “According to official data, 25 volcanoes are now under alert or watch status and they must be given priority with regard to disaster mitigation planning at district or city levels,” he said at a workshop on journalists’ role in disaster management. Large-scale seismic activity rising along planet’s southern pole January 15, 2012 – ANTARTICA - A strong and shallow series of earthquakes have erupted near the remote South Shetland Islands region of Antarctica on Sunday, experts from the U.S. Geological Survey said. The earthquakes in the intense tectonically-activated series measured a 6.6 magnitude, followed by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake and a 5.1 aftershock. The epicenter of the earthquakes was at various depths of from one kilometer (0.62 miles) to 14 km (9.2 miles) below the earth’s surface and some 464 kilometers west of Coronation Island in distance. No destructive tsunami was created, according to the U.S. NOAA warning center. The earthquake series is worrisome because it’s further evidence of what I have been warning about for over the past 6 months, that the Southern hemisphere, particularly around the periphery of Antarctic, is shows increasing signs of seismic destabilization. On January 12, there was a swarm of five moderate earthquakes which erupted south of Africa- the strongest of which was a 5.3 and a 5.5. On January 13, the South Sandwich Islands, north of Antarctica, was hit with a 5.1, and 5.2. On January 14 the region was struck again with a 5.0 earthquake and another 4.9 on January 15th. The 28 second infrared time lapse video shows the volcano activity on the evening of January 16. The eruptive periods are throwing lava on the slopes. The heat of the ash cloud can well be seen during the second eruption. From my personal experience i remember not only the beautiful fireworks but also the thunder and the incredible radiant heat. Grímsfjall volcano prepares for new eruption

It is clear that Grímsfjall volcano is an restless volcano. In the year 2011 it had the largest eruption for at least 140 years. But even so that does not stop the volcano from preparing new eruption sometimes soon. But I am now expecting an new eruption from Grímsfjall volcano in the next 12 to 48 months or so at the earliest. The preparing for eruption clues have already started to show. But that is an slow increase in earthquakes in Grímsfjall volcano. Something that has always been a clear indicator of that an eruption might not be far off, even if nobody knows when and how big next eruption is going to be. It has been documented that Grímsfjall volcano does sometimes have an eruption every once or two year when the activity is at highest. But since the year 1983 the eruptions in Grímsfjall volcano have been getting more frequent and larger, the largest one so far being last year.
GPS data from the past 6 months (I think). As can be seen not a lot of magma has been going into Grímsfjall volcano system since the large eruption that started 21.05.2011. So far the inflation has only been around 100 mm to date, but even so that is more then whole inflation of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in the year 2010. But that was only around 60 mm for comparison. It is unclear what happens next in Grímsfjall volcano. But for us how watch volcanoes. This is going to mean a lot of waiting time until next eruption in Grímsfjall volcano.

Chile / Argentina / Airport closed again
A few days ago the Argentinians were very happy to welcome the first Aerolinas Argentinas flight in San Carlos de Bariloche. Only a few days later, the airport had to close again due to the continuing (subsided) eruption of the Chilean Cordon Caulle volcano. San Carlos de Baricloche is highly dependent on tourism. With a closed airport and a lot of ash in the air most tourists are deviating their jouney to other places. San Carlos de Bariloche is very unformtunate to be located at the western side of the powerful volcano. Most winds are westerly blowing from the Pacific Ocean over the Andes towards Argentina.

USA / Yellowstone National Park
Over the past three years we’ve witnessed two large earthquake swarms at Yellowstone (2010 and 2009). Recent history tells us that these earthquake swarms are common, but we would like to know how frequently they have occurred in the more distant past. USGS researcher Bill Evans may have found an answer. $$$$

The current eruption of Kilauea volcano has entered its 29th year. A summit lava lake is located in a 150 m wide pit in Halemaumau crater. The surface of the lava lake varies from a depth of 70-150 m. The vent has been active since an explosion on 19th March 2008. Eruptions continue on the east rift zone and have been continuing since 3rd January 1983. Lava flows are currently active 3 km SE of Pu'u O'o crater. On 6th January 2012 sulphur dioxide emission was 150 tonnes per day.

Eruptions continue at Puyehue volcano in Chile. On 13th January the airport at Bariloche in Argentina reopened to flights for the first time since the eruption of Puyehue on 5th June 2011. Ashfall caused the closure of the airport again on 16th January 2012.

January 19, 2012 – COSTA RICA – The alert for the Turrialba Volcano is back following Wednesday’s activity that included the expulsion of ash and a slight tremor. The activity was confirmed by the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico Nacional (Ovsicori) that constantly monitors the volcano. The spewing of ash and debris and the tremor was confirmed by area’s residents. OVSICORI experts are on site analyzing the causes of this new outpouring of ash that lasted some 20 minutes. In addition, the experts are involved in flyovers of the area. El Hierro Volcano : Yellow-Red alert – Lava balloon spotted in new location ! Update 20/01 – 12:50 UTC

There were a few lava balloons at strange location further to the west and closer to the shore that the Telefonica camera found. Not sure if there is a new vent.

Update 20/01 – 12:50 UTC
One of the images published by the IEO and used in the site of Canarias7 shows a second emission point, deeper than the current vent but located in a flatter area which may accumulate magma more easier than the current steep vent. However we haven’t seen any jacuzzi on this location as we do not know the exact position of this vent. Many of our readers (see comment below) have spotted lava balloons on a new vent location.

IEO has released a report on the bathymetric measurments. It is based on the measurments from 11th and 12th of January. So it does not take into account the last weeks heightened activity.

The current depth of the volcano is 130 meters. The cone is now mended with new material and has a lower incline of the slope, and should as such be more stable. This new stabillity should give Bob a good chance at growing if the eruption continues.

A lot of the ejected material has gone down slope, both from the earlier flank collaps, but also with a lot of new material. It has now filled up the canyon leading away from Bob. This should also increase the growth rate.

The total volume ejected via the volcanic flank eruption vent called Bob is now above the 0,145 cubic kilometre mark. Considering the amount of tephra suspended in the water, high volume of floating pumice stone (pyroclasts) we could now consider Bob to be rated at a VEI-3 on the explosivity scale. But remember that this has been achieved over more than a hundred days of activity. As a direct comparison we can compare with Eyjafjallajökulls eruption that lasted about 90 days and ejected a total lava volume of 1.4 ± 0.1 x 107 m3, comparing tephra volume is hard, but should be about the same really although the tephra here is suspended in the water. But judging from stain size it is a probable guess that we can assume roughly that Bob has ejected 1.4 x 108 m3 of tephra.

Our little Bob is actually not that small. Just very slow and steady in his build up.
