The breaking news goes to Krakatau volcano, who has started a vigorous phase of explosive activity, sending an ash plume to over 4 km altitude and causing ash fall in more than 100 km distance. According to news articles, there are now near constant explosions.

Earthquake activity at El Hierro has picked up again. A new swarm of earthquakes started yesterday and is located just north of the western El Golfo coast. So far, there were 19 quakes yesterday and 7 today. Most quakes are between magnitudes 1.5-2 and located in a narrow elongated area at about 10 km depth.

Stromboli volcano has relatively low activity with less frequent and mostly small explosions. Tremor is continuing to decrease.

INSIVUMEH aqnnounced this morning an increase of the activity at Fuego volcano. Currently, the volcano produces constant explosions with plumes up to 900 m high and has 2 active lava flows.

Santiaguito volcano in Guatemala has not changed much, continues to have 4 active flows generating block avalanches and produces occasional ash explosions with plumes up to about 1 km height.

Seismic activity of Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia has been decreasing over the past days, but a weak tremor signal and few small quakes are still being recorded and Manizales observatory maintains the status orange. The volcano is steaming, but there are no reports of recent ash emissions.

Galeras volcano (Colombia) has been calm except for a felt magnitude 2.7 quake at 7.5 km depth about 12 km NE of the volcano on 29 Aug.

Tungurahua volcano: Seismic activity has increased since the beginning of the month again, however not reached previous levels and IG describes it at moderate. Surface activity have been mainly steaming, creating a 300 m high plume, and few weak explosions, causing light ash fall.

Bezymianny volcano, Kamchatka: After the explosive eruption on 1 September, seismic activity of the volcano is now low, but a viscous lava flow continues to effuse on the lava dome flank and there are strong to moderate fumarolic activity and hot avalanches. The ash plume from the explosion was last seen yesterday drifting east of Kamchatka in the northern Pacific.

Batu Tara had explosions producing ash plumes to 7,000 ft altitude today.

In Japan, Sakurajima volcano had 3 more moderate explosions during the past 24 hours. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

EQ swarm is ongoing in Bláfjöll, Iceland. This is about 19 km away from where I sit and write these words – in Reykjavík, to the left up on this IMO chart, about 315 degrees from swarm end – 19 km to the North-West for those do not know how to read the compass.
[link to www.vedur.is]
Some EQ tonight are felt as very tiny or small taps under the floor, but one must be very quiet-still to observe them. This swarm strikes me as UNUSUAL and has not happened since I started watching the EQ charts. It SEEMS tetonic in origin, likely is, but “steadyness” and certain “concentration” make me think of what makes it really tick now. SAN SIL is closest to Bláfjöll, only afew Km way. [link to hraun.vedur.is]
The swarm to the west (Fagradalsfjall) dried up but Bláfjöll stated shaking even more tonight.
The mountains (Bláfjöll) are part of Brennisteinsfjöll Volcano and “relatively large” lava eruption was there (crater due east 2-3 km) about 5-6,000 years ago, and a smaller one 1012 years ago (year 1000 AD). These were of fissure type, quickly forming few active craters from which lava floated for a while. One lava stream (about 6,000 years ago) entered Reykjavík area, at Elliðaárdalur, and if same happened today whould be a nuisance and cause traffic delays for some days, in certain directions (I wrote lengthy remark on this some time back, but likely all have forgotten this now). I went to Bláfjöll yesterday and indeed some minour shaking was found.

Ingrid Parpercen on Avcan FB and has reported all this to the authorities by ringing 112 and IGN but nobody has got back to her,

This is only part of her comments.

,,I am concerned that in me this morning the smell of ammonia was usually very large, since as a month smells like things broken down by the pipes, but the smell of last night if the recognition very well the ammonia smell was very strong at that time the dogs of the area were barks that barks, this is not normal,,

Description
The activities of volcanoes in western part of Indonesia territory are escalating, with one of them, Mt. Anak Krakatau, located in Sunda strait spewing volcanic ash affecting area of downtown Bandar Lampung, local media reported on Tuesday. Bandar Lampung, the capital of Lampung province, is 75 km away from the volcano, further than the one in previous times that affected Cilegon in West Java and Kalianda in Lampung province, according to the media report. The whole area of Bandar Lampung was covered in volcanic ash. Despite a thin layer, the ash was evenly distributed across the city. The volcanic ash also reached parts of Pesawaran and Pringsewu regencies. The head of the Information and Observation division at Lampung Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), Nurhuda, said the volcanic ash was carried by winds from the southeast.

"High wind velocity has likely carried the ash from the southeast to reach as far as Bandar Lampung. We urge residents in the area to wear masks when they go outdoors, especially when they are riding motorcycles," Nurhuda said on Monday. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency ( PVMBG) has yet to upgrade Mt. Anak Krakatau's alert status to a higher level despite the increase in seismic and molten lava levels in the Sunda Strait, as of Sunday. Agency head Surono said that Mt. Anak Krakatau had been emitting molten lava and strombolian eruptions as of midday on Sunday. The lava spewed at a height of between 200 and 300 meters from its peak at midday on Monday. Head of the Anak Krakatau Observation Post in Rajabasa, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, said that Anak Krakatau's magmatic activities were unpredictable. According to Andi, Mt. Anak Krakatau emits 10 toxic gases during its eruption process, such as carbon doixide, which is fatal for humans. "Anyone who inhales the gas may experience breathing difficulties and lose consciousness. It may even lead to death," he was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying.

Besides the Anaka Krakatau volcano, an apparent volcanic activity also occurs in Tangkuban Parahu volcano located in West Java. It made the authority close down the Mount Tangkuban Parahu nature tourism park. "We're not allowing vendors and visitors to go up to the crater at present," said West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency head Sigit Udjwalaprana in Bandung on Monday. Earlier, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency raised the status of Mt. Tangkuban Parahu from normal- active, or level 1, to alert, or level 2, on Aug. 23.

September 5, 2012 – GUATEMALA - The Fuego volcano in central Guatemala is continuing to erupt, shooting lava and columns of ash into the air, and causing concerns of a possible ash cloud that could halt flights in the area. The volcano overlooks the tourist city of Antigua and is one of central America’s most active volcanoes. Lava flows of around 1000m are being spewed out down the west and east sides of the volcano. No evacuations have been ordered, but aviation authorities have been alerted about a potential ash cloud, and air traffic is expected to be hindered. –AOL News

Further evidence that the Yellowstone megavolcano could blow without warning

Annalee Newitz

Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a giant volcanic caldera, or an earthen cap that covers a huge reservoir of superhot liquid rock and poison gasses. Large parts of the park were formed in previous supervolcano eruptions, the most recent of which happened about 70,000 years ago. Now, the floor of the caldera is rising, and earthquakes in the region suggest magma movement beneath the park.

Over at Ars Technica, John Timmer explains a recent scientific paper from GSA Today assessing the risks of another supervolcano. The researchers emphasize that there are no signs of an impending eruption, so no cause for panic. But at the same time, they point out that previous eruptions came fast. Writes Timmer:

An examination of the shape and composition of crystals formed in previous eruptions indicate that the molten material experienced a rapid ascent to the surface, and didn't end up sitting in pools closer to the surface before being ejected. This suggests that a recharging of the deep magma reservoir could lead to relatively rapid eruptions, and there might not be any clear sign of the magma moving towards the surface from there that would tip us off to the coming eruptions.

All of which suggests that monitoring the deep magma reservoir is probably the best way to understand what Yellowstone might be up to.

Shiveluch – the Bad Boy of Kamchatka: Part Two
Posted on September 5, 2012 by Spica For nearly a century after the 1854 eruption Shiveluch had been highly active, building cones that had eventually filled the ‘crater within a crater’ that had most likely been formed in the last major collapse event of 600 BP. But then, in 1950, activity came to a halt apart from steaming. For over a decade there were no explosions, no eruptions, no extrusions.

Smelling Grímsvötn

5 September 2012
While piloting a commercial transatlantic flight last year, Captain Klaus Sievers and his crew got a whiff of an unusual odour. In a confined space 10 km up in the air, there was only one thing it could be.

The foul smell with traces of sulphur in the cockpit came from none other than the Grímsvötn volcano that was spewing gas and ash from southeast Iceland.
Sulphur dioxide often indicates volcanic ash, and the presence of ash in the atmosphere can endanger jet engines.

Timely information about ash, sulphur dioxide clouds and their dispersion are crucial to alert civil aviation authorities.

Earth-observing satellites can provide this information. With frequent and worldwide measurements of ash plumes and sulphur dioxide emissions, satellites help to improve aviation safety.

Once landed, Captain Sievers, a representative of the German Airline Pilots’ Association, used data from the MetOp satellite via the Support to Aviation Control Service – SACS – to confirm the sulphur dioxide.

Volcanic aerosol
“The SACS images allowed me clearly to identify and locate the Grímsvötn sulphur plumes after the flight,” he said.

“The images also gave an indication of the gas cloud position before the flight, but did not provide a forecast of their exact location.

“As I found out, the smell of Grímsvötn is not pleasant. For comfort and safety reasons, it would be good if it were possible to avoid such an experience for you and all people on the airplane.”

Inhalation of sulphur dioxide, even at low concentrations, can affect people with respiratory problems. Flight crews are advised to use oxygen masks while the smell lingers.

When sulphur dioxide combines with water in the atmosphere, sulphuric acid is formed, which can damage aircraft windows, fade exterior paint and build up sulphate deposits in engines. This leads to higher maintenance costs.

Based on multi-satellite observations, SACS provides early warning ash and sulphur dioxide information about volcanic eruptions.

When an eruption occurs, an alert is sent to interested users, most notably to Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres, and public maps are generated showing the extent and intensity of the volcanic plumes.

Capt. Sievers has been using satellite images through the SACS service for the past two years to prepare for his intercontinental flights.

It proved particularly useful when planning his route from the Far East to Europe on 15 June. A day earlier, the Nabro volcano had erupted in Eritrea, spewing ash across his intended route over East Africa and the Middle East.

There are a lot of worried islanders now commenting on the Avcan FB page this is part of a comment by Julius Sebastian he makes the point about thew surface layer under the island being very porous and permeable to the magma and asks could this be the reason the EQ’S are now low in strength? .

,,But what is clear is that under my point of view there is a very porous surface layer on the island of El Hierro which is relatively permeable to the magma which would make that the earthquakes were not very intense or almost non-existent. Why, and just why should be careful, because who tells us that the magma is there very close almost without us and why are so many smells and gases in Earth?. On the other hand, in the previous eruption, we were lucky that it was in the sea, and not caught anyone off guard. But, and if now out on the ground?, does daria rapid evacuation time?. Maybe before the eruption (if it occurs), notariamos jets of gases with many noise in a few hours before the departure of the lava itself. ,,

A small swarm calls raise my attention, just 13km from Hekla top (or about 6km from its base). Its still within the SISZ. So far I have no idea if this is pure tectonics, or some magmatic movement.

But since there was also a strain movement at Hekla at 10am today, I suspect that this might be another episode of some magma moving under Hekla.

Tremors stir dangerous gas emission from Indonesia’s Mount Tangkuban Perahu volcano
Posted on September 7, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
September 7, 2012 – INDONESIA – The Indonesian Vulcanology Office issued a warning on Thursday for the public to take extra caution when visiting Mount Tangkuban Perahu just northwest of Bandung in West Java, after a series of tremors shook the mountain and put officials on edge. “Tourist operators and tourists should understand that no matter how sophisticated the equipment, it’s useless if the warnings are not heeded,” Surono, the head of the Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Agency (PVMBG) said. Surono said that from 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday up until 4:20 a.m. on Thursday, a series of tremors shook the mountain, while poisonous gases seeped from the crater. “Those inhaling the gas will not die . . . but can suffer from dizziness and nausea; therefore, we are recommending no activity whatsoever be held within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from the crater,” Surono said. He said that the carbon monoxide released by the Ratu crater had already reached 2 percent, putting the level in the “dangerous category” according to international standards, Surono said. The recommendation to clear the top of the mountain had already been sent to the governor and the local district chief, Surono added.

Eruptive History

A study conducted in 2001 determined that Tangkuban Perahu has erupted at least 30 times in the previous 40,750 years. Studies of the tephra layers within 3 km of the crater revealed that twenty one were minor eruptions and the remaining nine were major eruptions. The eruptions that occurred prior to approximately 10,000 years ago were magmatic/phreatomagmatic. The eruptions that occurred after 10,000 years ago were phreatic."[4]

Costa Rica earthquake awakens Nicaraguan volcano, which last erupted in 50 B.C: alert level raised

September 8, 2012 – MANAGUA – The Apoyeque Volcano, located northwest of the capital, was calm Friday, but officials continued monitoring it for volcanic tremors, a release from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) said. The agency registered 21 low-intensity volcano-related tremors between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, prompting the government to issue a green advisory alert. Seismic activity near the volcano, located 10 kilometers northwest of Managua, “decreased Friday morning, but it doesn’t mean that it has disappeared,” INETER Geophysics Director Angélica Muñoz told reporters. She also announced that a group of experts will travel to the volcano to investigate the earthquakes causes. The volcanic tremors began after a magitude- 7.6 earthquake hit neighboring Costa Rica on Wednesday. –Tico Times
The last eruption of the volcano was in 50 B.C. The volcano is capable of VEI 6 stage eruptions.
Four volcanoes in Costa Rica closely monitored after quake: When seeing the after effects of the earthquake in Costa Rica this past week, one thing that needs to be watched closely is the active volcanoes within the country. Even a small shift under one of these giants could cause an eruption. At least four of the seven active volcanoes in the country are in the crosshairs of scientists after the earthquake of 7.6 magnitude occurred on Wednesday in Costa Rica. These are Arenal (Alajuela), Rincon de la Vieja (Guanacaste), Turrialba (Cartago) and Poás (Alajuela). According to specialists agree Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI-A) and the National Seismological Network (RSN: ICE-UCR), due to the size of the earthquake, it is normal volcanic structures; especially those already vulnerable are affected. There is a rearrangement of material and even chemical changes. The clearest example is the Arenal, where locals reported a noise characteristic of rolling boulders.” We know there is a cave in the north, in the direction of the community of La Palma,” said Maria Martinez geochemistry, OVSICORI. A team of this institution made field visit to the site and will release more information today. “In the Poas, how little we could see the rangers (by weather), report no noticeable landslides and cracks,” he added. However, Raul Mora, the RSN, ensures that the most noticeable changes have been in its lagoon.” It looks much sulfur yellow spots on the lake, which is average at Poás before the earthquake but were not.” In the Turrialba volcano has reported a slight collapse, but “the bottom” of the colossus, rather than volcanic structure.” The emission level is similar to what was observed previously,” said the expert OVSICORI. Because there have been earthquakes there, the RSN yesterday decided to install a seismological station between between that and the Irazu volcano. This is done so that in the medium term is uncertain whether the earthquakes that occur there (as replicas) are the result of a tectonic or volcano itself. Scientists have not yet visited the Rincon de la Vieja, but have received reports from neighbors (who live about 17 miles west of the volcano), who claim that the crystalline water normally receive from a nascent nearby nature has a milky consistency apparently mixed with sulfur. “He also mentioned alleged cracks opened in the north, but we have not confirmed. We also know that, from time to time, there looms a steam plume. That happens from days before the earthquake,” explained Martinez. “We know from experience in other countries that movements after more than 7 degrees of intensity there is the possibility that changes occur in the activity of volcanoes,” said Mora. “We’re not saying there’s a risk. What we say is that it is best to take the pulse investigate,” he said Mora. –Costa Rican Times
