people who say the Earth is 4.5 billion years old are idiots. There's no way the center of the earth would still be hot lava if the earth was 4 billion years old. Space is extremely cold, every night heat pours off the planet into space.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6129226

No YOU are an idiot

the vast majority of the heat in Earth's interior—up to 90 percent—is fueled by the decaying of radioactive isotopes like Potassium 40, Uranium 238, 235, and Thorium 232 contained within the mantle. These isotopes radiate heat as they shed excess energy and move toward stability. "The amount of heat caused by this radiation is almost the same as the total heat measured emanating from the Earth."

The earth is not a nuclear reactor you stupid head.

Seriously, where did you come up with this?

There is no way they could ever prove this, nobody has ever drilled deeper than 7 miles into the crust, it's 4 thousand MILES to the center of the earth.

How do you know this. Even i dont know this. You cant believe everything you hear so stop trying to prove it wrong. Your amusing everyone and making a fool of yourself. Try communicating instead of proving.

seen that link Luis?

volcanic activity, injections of magma underground, are EXACTLY what could trigger a slide at El Julan.

it could happen at any time, even without actual volcanic activity at the surface.

Constant earthquake activity in El Hierro voclano
Posted on September 17, 2012 by Jón Frímann
...It is only when we get the earthquake data for past 1 year when things get really interesting. Based on this data. Magma is now already at the depth of around 10 km in El Hierro volcano. Why it has not erupted is hard to answer (the answer might come after an eruption takes place. But no sooner). There are even clues in this image that some of the magma might be as shallow as 5 km. But it is hard to see it for sure. This image also suggest that amount of magma in El Hierro volcano, in the forms of magma sill is a lot more then what did erupt last year in El Hierro volcano. The tube that is feeding this magma into El Hierro volcano appears to be located at 18.05 longitude. That tube is marked by earthquakes going down well below 28 km depth.

The current earthquake activity in El Hierro volcano is creating new magma sill inside the volcano. That is just storing magma for possible future eruptions. The activity so far has been bit stronger in terms of amount of earthquakes since last earthquake swarm in June and July 2012. But that earthquake swarm did top at around 172 earthquakes during 24 hour period. So the current earthquake swarm is larger in that regard. But so far no earthquake has been larger then magnitude 3.2. But that might change if any larger earthquake happens. As often is the case.

It is hard to say what happens next in El Hierro volcano. But I would guess that once eruption starts in El Hierro volcano it might last for months. Based on the amount of magma that seems to have build up inside the volcano during the past few months. That build-up phase however does not seems to be completed at the moment. How long it is going to last is impossible to say at current time. But this is something that is worth keeping an watch for. El Hierro volcano is going to erupt basalt if the eruption is on land. Older volcano cones are not going erupt again. At least that is my assessment of what I have seen with satellite pictures.

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
A quick weekend note about a volcano we haven’t heard from for much of 2012: El Hierro. Seismicity under El Hierro have increased since September 13 after months to very low activity and since Friday, over 300 earthquakes have occurred. These earthquakes are mostly deep (18-22 km) and under the central part of the island (see above), and have now reached over 115 earthquakes in the past 24 hours. This sharp increase at depth might suggest a new body of magma is intruding underneath the island. Combine that with the observation of deformation of the land surface at El Hierro, and you can be fairly confidence that new material is entering. However, as with any observations such as these at an active volcano, the big question is whether this will lead to an eruption and that is very unclear. Intrusion without eruption happen frequently at volcano, so we may only be seeing the normal activity at a hotspot volcano like El Hierro. Only if the seismicity continues and become more shallow, the deformation increases and the release of volcanic gases such as carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide increase can we begin to wonder if another eruption at El Hierro is in the works. Volcano Eruption in Indonesia on Monday, 17 September, 2012 at 05:59 (05:59 AM) UTC.

Description
A volcano has erupted in eastern Indonesia, spewing clouds of thick, gray ash. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. State volcanologist Kristianto says Mount Gamalama in the Molucca Islands sprang to life last week. It unleashed two strong eruptions over the weekend, sending volcanic ash as high as 1 kilometer (0.62 miles). Kristianto, who uses only one name, says slow-moving red lava was visible at the peak of the eruption Monday. Villages have been blanketed with thick ash but no evacuations have been ordered. Gamalama last erupted late last year, and its mudflows killed four villagers two weeks later. Indonesia is a vast archipelago with millions of people living on mountains or near fertile flood plains. Seasonal downpours here often cause landslides.

Update 17/09 – 08:38 UTC
- “Only” 30 earthquakes listed by IGN this morning
- Hypocenters : no change in depth (hypocenter or focal depth or depth are indicating the same = layer in the underground (crust or deeper) where the energy is generated
- Epicenters : same area than yesterday centering in the historic crater area
- GPS deformations :
Restinga : 1 cm further uplifting (Ultra Rapid) – stabilized on the longitude and latitude axis (= earlier movement to the South-East)
Pinar : 1 cm uplift – pushed 1 cm further to the North – stabilized on the longitude axis (= earlier movement to the East)
Frontera : no more uplifting, 0,5 cm to the North – no change on the longitude axis since long time
The plotters under our readers can try to trace this way the source of the magma. Click here for the source of our data (courtesy Prof. Sagiya – University of Nagoya)

64: Indonesia’s Mount Gamalama erupts, spews volcanic ashes

Posted on September 17, 2012

September 17, 2012 – TERNATE, Indonesia – Mount Gamalama in Ternate, North Maluku, spewed out volcanic ash on Sunday, showering some parts of the provincial capital that is currently hosting an international sailing event: Sail Morotai 2012. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. However, guests of Corner Palace Hotel panicked when a rain of ash fell for about 15 minutes. Matut, 48, a local resident, said ask also rained down on Saturday night at 11 p.m. until the small hours of Sunday morning, Antara news agency reported. Volcanic ash mostly blanketed the eastern and southern parts of Ternate, the capital of North Maluku province. Villages have been blanketed with thick ash but no evacuations have been ordered. Gamalama last erupted late last year, and its mudflows killed four villagers two weeks later. Indonesia is a vast archipelago with millions of people living on mountains or near fertile flood plains. Volcanic activity resumes on Spain’s El Hierro Island

Posted on September 17, 2012

September 17, 2012 – CANARY ISLANDS – Volcanic activity on Spain’s El Hierro Island has resumed far below the Earth’s surface in a similar manner to last July, albeit slightly stronger, the director of the National Geographic Institute, or IGN, in the Canary Islands, Maria Jose Blanco, told Efe on Sunday. Blanco said that a peak of seismic activity is under way, a continuation of the volcanic process – a shifting of magma many kilometers (miles) underground – that began in July 2011 which, although the main activity ended at the time with an undersea eruption, that did not mean that the overall activity had come to a definitive conclusion. The IGN official said that at present it is not expected that the seismic movements that have been registered – which have occurred at depths of some 20 kilometers (about 12.5 miles) – exceed 3.2 on the Richter scale, a fairly low level. Blanco could not specify how long this new round of activity would last, although she did say that seismic peaks like the current one would, in all likelihood, continue to occur. Therefore, she said, the IGN is studying the idea of convening the scientific committee of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk in the Canaries after this reactivation in the depths of the El Hierro volcano, where over the past three days more than 330 minor seismic movements have been registered. Officials with the regional government of the Canaries told Efe that experts had verified “an acceleration of released seismic energy accompanied by deformations” in underground structures. For the present, the largest movement registered so far was the one measured at 3.2 on the Richter scale, which was felt on Saturday for some 13 hours and 15 minutes by the residents of the municipality of El Pinar, according to IGN data.

Activity increases at Mexico’s volcano: A slight increase of activity can be noted at Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico. The frequency of explosions has increased to more than 1 per hour, i.e. doubled when compared to last week. The more energetic explosions produced small ash plumes rising up to 1 km. Episodes of volcanic tremor occurred as well, CENAPRED writes. –Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Beg to differ a bit.
Mainly you are right, but there are at least 3 large volcanic systems out there.
You have one underwater caldera visible north of Theistareykjarbunga. This one is believed to be a part of the Theistareykir fissure swarm. It probably had eruptions as late as 1600.
Then Kolbeinsey ridge volcano (1755), and yet another out north that I know nothing about more than it is supposed to exist and a name, Höll Seamount.

This swarm is though purely tectonic. It is a microplate moving, rotating around the lock of Theistareykjarbunga. It is believed to responsible for the unusual tenacity of that particular volcano. But as such not related in any way to volcanism. Bad part is that the strain on the lock is increasing with the increased motion, and we know there is ongoing rapid inflation in the system. Researcers do expect a systemic 7M quake there sometime, when is totally unkown. And a 7M tectonic quake in a tectonic lock that at the same time is a vast magma chamber… Not nice.

I just had to write about Theistareykjarbunga here. It had nothing to do with me liking that particular volcano, I promise Irpsit.

“Is the crust starting to show cracks ? Why are we writing this ? If IGN data are correct, we have noticed a number of shallower earthquakes the last couple of hours. Nothing to be scared off, but this is definitely a change in patterns versus earlier today and the 2 preceding days. From 12:27 until 14:39 (less than 3 hours) we have noticed 6 under 20 km earthquakes on a total of 17.
The shallowest being a 13 km, but also a 15 km and a couple of 18 km. Is the magma the cause ? IGN would probably know it but mostly keeps his information for international science conferences a couple of months later!
The shallowest one was recorded below the Sabinosa area, the area where the other 10 km were recorded last week.”

Earthquakes in Tindafjallajökull volcano
Posted on September 17, 2012 by Jón Frímann
One of the most quiet volcanoes in Iceland had earthquake swarm today (17.09.2012). I am not aware of any major earthquake activity in Tindafjallajökull volcano during the past 20 years. I am not sure that if there has been any earthquake activity in Tindafjallajökull volcano during this time. One off-earthquake might have happened once in a while. As they do with every volcano in Iceland from time to time. It is unclear why this earthquake swarm took place. But this might be due to stress changes in the area. Rather then anything volcanic taking place in Tindafjallajökull volcano.

The largest earthquake in this swarm had the magnitude of 1.1. The depth of this earthquake swarm was from 10.7 km and up to 3.1 km. This earthquake swarm appears to be over by now.

Katla volcano

The image above also shows earthquake activity in Katla volcano. This earthquake activity is well below what did happen in May to end of July this summer (2012) in Katla volcano. Currently the activity in Katla volcano is low and has been so for many weeks now. I am not expecting that change without some increase in smaller earthquakes first. For the moment, everything is quiet in Katla volcano.

Two Indonesian volcanoes awaken, rattling nerves

Posted on September 18, 2012

September 18, 2012 – INDONESIA - Two of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes erupted on Saturday, prompting the government to issue warnings to populations living near the affected mountains. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Sunday that new eruption started at Lokon in North Sulawesi and Gamalama at Ternate in North Maluku. Lokon generated a 1,500-meter high ash plume and violent strombolian (low-level) activity with some lava flow, while Gamalama produced a shower of ashes that covered the nearby city. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for BNPB, said on Sunday that Lokon, located in North Sulawesi’s Tomohon area, erupted at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The explosion from the eruption shattered windows of the command post built to monitor the activities of the volcano, he said. The agency, Sutopo said, had issued warnings to local administrations to prepare precautionary measures, and called on people to remain alert. “The residents don’t have to be evacuated but they must not do any activities within the range of five kilometers from the volcano,” Sutopo said. He said that the BNPB had asked the Tomohon administration to raise the awareness of residents. Meanwhile, the Gamalama spurt sent ashes into the air for about 15 minutes at 11 p.m., before the wind carried the ashes toward the North Maluku capital of Ternate. “The ashes came down on the city, decreasing visibility to only 50 meters,” Sutopo said. He said BNPB’s local branch went to the affected area and set up four stations to help people in the event of a larger eruption. “Here also, we don’t see any need to evacuate people. But we will stay on high alert,” the official said. Lokon has erupted several times previously, with an explosion in July 2011 forcing more than 5,200 people to be evacuated. The eruption created huge clouds of ash as high as 3,500 meters. Lokon’s last deadly eruption was in 1991, when a Swiss tourist was killed. Last December, Gamalama erupted, resulting in four villagers being killed and dozens others being hospitalized. About 1,000 residents were forced to evacuate. The Indonesian archipelago has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Earlier this month, there was volcanic activity at Lampung’s Anak Krakatau. –Jakarta Globe [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Dude…. CHIE’s noise level in that band went 3 sigma above yesterdays levels a little after 1300 UT (13:06:48 to be more exact) and has done so about 5 times since then.

What’s going on?

It could be interpreted as that and still be accurate.

A 3 sigma event, especially when it happens five times in the next 10 hours means that it’s not some random occurrence. Something is actually changing.

Micro update on El Hierro

El Hierro does not really merrit a new post right now, so here is todays brief update.
The ongoing earthquake swarm seems to loose it’s momentum and the earthquakes have centered in an area close to the middle of the “mercedes star” of the island. The earthquakes are in general smaller than previous and center around 20 km depth.
The reason for the loss of momentum is found in the new set of GPS points. It is clear that this new arrival of magma was small, about the same size as the one in late january early february. Maximum uplift is 20mm compared to the first one that led to the eruption with 50mm maximum value, and the third one with a maximum of 90mm.
Unless new magma arrives within the next few days the activity will dwindle out due to loss of systemic pressure as a driving force. Ie, that the pressure reaches an equilibrium with the surrounding crust thereby halting the possibility for new magma filling earthquakes to happen.
In a way, that small ongoing swarm to the north of the hotspring bath resort of Balneario Pozo la Salud is more interesting. It has been going on and off for more than a month now, it is quite possible that it is caused by magma moving up from the June bolus that went out to the south west. If so there is probably enough magma to sustain the activity for some time and could in theory get interesting.

September 17, 2012 volcano activity

Rodger Wilson is back in the field (back-country) for about 3 weeks. Less seismicity reports during this period, but we will continue to inform you about volcano activity worldwide.

Little Sitkin, Alaska : Seismic activity remains moderately elevated. Satellite views of the volcano have been cloudy over the past 24 hours. AVO continues to monitor the seismicity closely and will issue further updates as conditions change.

Iliamna volcano, Alaska : Seismicity remains slightly above background. Satellite images of the volcano over the past 24 hours obscured by clouds. AVO has received no reports of unusual activity at the volcano. The current level of activity does not indicate an imminent or certain eruption. Seismic activity, along with gas emissions, appear to be declining gradually. A similar seismic swarm occurred at Iliamna Volcano in 1996-1997 and was not followed by eruptive activity. Prior to an eruption, AVO would expect to see a significant increase in earthquake activity beneath the volcano.

El Hierro volcano (Canary Islands) is entered in a new active period with hundreds of volcanic earthquakes. Far from an eruption though as the hypocenters are concentrated at 20 to 23 km depth

Fuego volcano (Guatemala) has returned to a normal behavior with regular explosions sending fine ash 400 to 800 meters in the sky. Lava rivers have disappeared completely.

Mount Gamalama, a volcano on Ternate island (Indonesia), erupted on Sunday. Slowly moving lava could be seen at the top on Monday. (see also video below)

Activity observed by satellites
VAAC reports that Lokon Empung and Batu Tara (Indonesia) are potentially dangerous for low flying aircraft.
NO VAAC bulletin mentioning explosions at Sakurajima today,
SO2 satellite imagery is showing plumes at Nevado del Ruiz, Kilauea and Mount Pagan.
