Thanks for keeping us updated Treyfish.

I see quite a bit of news, especially from the South American countries regarding H1N1, but can never read their language to know or include it here, so your help with different languages adds a lot to our thread.

So, again I thank you for your continued postings.

cheers

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Revisiting the recent new coronovirus that was detected in Saudi Arabia, we have this new suspected case of a young child who has travelled to Hong Kong.

This virus seems to be acting rather strangely, with so few cases and such sparodic timing of cases, one really must wonder just where and what the reservoir for it is.

A four-year-old boy is suspected to have caught a new novel coronavirus and is now kept in isolation at Queen Mary Hospital. The new virus - a relative of the Sars corona virus - had killed a Saudi man earlier this year and sickened a Qatari man last month.

This next article from India, continues to indicate the advancing state of H1N1 there.

Later in the article mention is made that 30% of the community has no immunity against this virus and that even those that were vaccinated over a year ago may need a booster vaccination, so its little wonder that this bug is causing the problems that it is.

H1N1 cases surged in September.

PUNE: The monsoon season saw a gradual rise in the number of swine flu cases and casualties, with September presenting a grim scenario. While 226 people contracted the H1N1 infection and nine people succumbed to it between June and September, the virus infected 130 people and killed four in September alone.

There was only one positive case and no deaths in June that went up to 18 cases and one death in July. In August, the virus infected 78 people and killed four. The number rose to 130 positive cases and four deaths in September.

New Zealand has reported its statistics for Influenza for the period from the 24th of September to the 30th of September 2012, they are as follows.

· ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 19 out of 20 District Health Boards
(DHB) with a national consultation rate of 12.7 per 100 000 (47 ILI consultations).
· A total of 293 swabs were received from sentinel (9) and non-sentinel (284) surveillance.
· 28 viruses were identified: B (15) including two B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like viruses
(belonging to the B/Yamagata lineage), A(H3N2) (8) including one A/Perth/16/2009
(H3N2)-like, A (Not subtyped) (4), and A(H1N1)pdm09 (1) virus.
In week 39, ILI consultation rate has decreased below the baseline. The proportion of positive
influenza samples has also decreased. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses remain the predominant
virus in many regions. These viruses do not appear to demonstrate a major antigenic drift.

The latest Influenza reports for South Africa are as follows.

Comment:
The 2012 influenza season started in week 21 (ending 27 May) when the detection rate from the Viral Watch Programme rose to 21% and peaked in week 33 (ending 19 August) at 68.4%. This year to date (week 37, ending 16 September), 1776 specimens have been received from Viral Watch sites in all nine provinces. Influenza A (unsubtyped) was detected in 11 patients, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in four, influenza A(H3N2) in 408, and influenza B in 286 patients.

In this time period 3794 patients with SARI have been tested at the 5 sentinel sites, and influenza A(unsubtyped) was detected in five patients, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in one, influenza A(H3N2) in 113, and influenza B in 103 patients in all four provinces with sentinel sites. There are a number of specimens collected during week 37 awaiting results.

When the H1N1 brroke out in April 2009 we were told that it would bring the world to its knees.

However, my son who is a Doctor of Pharmacy and a VERY wise gentleman told me this . . . "Mom, the H1N1 is a trial run. The BIG ONE will hit us in about three or four years."

We are in 2012 and soon will arrive at 2013; the timing is perfect!!!!!

I think he may have been right******bump

This was posted a few weeks ago and I always intended replying to it, but never did and for that I do offer my deepest apolagies to "Messenger".

Im certain that we all have quietly held thoughts that your post has reflected.

Its interresting that your qualified son would make such a firm assertion on the topic, it sounded like he had some sort of insight that we may not have been privy to, can I ask if this might be the case?

And while Im at it, thank you for taking the time to add your contribution to our thread, it is appreciated as are all appropriate posts.

Thanks for these posts Treyfish.

From this post an extract here indicates the possible extent of this extremely unfortunate incident.

Fortunately, further into the article it states that the pharmacy that manufactured this contaminated product has voluntarily closed while also recalling all the products that may have been affected, though this will be no comfort for those who will be affected by this traumatic incident.

The number of people infected with a rare type of meningitis tied to contaminated steroid injections has climbed to 105, federal health officials said Monday. Eight people have died.

The drugs were given starting May 21, much earlier than previously suspected, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Infections and deaths have been reported in nine states. As many as 13,000 patients may have been exposed to the potentially contaminated drugs recalled from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy, officials added.

Yesterday we reported that there had been a suspected case of the novel coronavirus first detected in Saudi Arabia and Qutar that had shown up in a young boy in Hong Kong.

If you can classify this news as fortunate then, so be it.

The samples taken from the boy have tested negative for that coronavirus, which is of course fortunate, however they have tested positive for Swine flu, H1N1, which is of real concern.

Though the boys father also appears to have had similar symptoms but not become seriously ill, this boy has needed to be hospitalized and will probably recover.

The real concern now will be the people that were travelling with these infected people from Jeddah of Saudi Arabia, and also the fact that H1N1 is now appearing in Sauda Arabia.

This coiuld also become a very confusing situation there especially if the new coronavirus does become more active in its spread and H1N1 also begins to infect more people at the same time.

Identiflying them and seperating them into seperate isolation treatment facilities would certainly present some serious challanges to health professionals there.

This also at the time when the annual traditional religious pilgrimages into this region are all about to begin, could amount into a potential nightmare should any of these bugs begin to seriously infect large numbers of people in the near future there.

The boy was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital for isolation on the same day. He has upper respiratory tract symptoms and there is no clinical or radiological evidence of pneumonia. He is stable. The boy tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus but negative for Novel Coronavirus.

A new vaccine has just received its manufacturing lisence.

What is of real interest here is that for the first time this vaccine is derived from RNA samples and doesent require a live virus to be isolated, "with the potential to produce new vaccines within a matter of weeks instead of months".

This new vaccine has so far only been applied to animal vaccines, but surly must, at some point in the future, have applications for human vaccines too.

New Swine Flu Vaccine Licensed
Oct. 8, 2012 11:33am

Harrisvaccines has received announcement of approval by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of licensure of the company’s swine influenza virus (SIV) H3N2 vaccine, approved by USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB). This is the first vaccine licensed by the USDA CVB that utilizes RNA Particle Technology.

The ultimate goal was to produce an SIV vaccine that could be manufactured faster and safer than those produced using modified live or inactivated/killed virus technologies, according to Kurt Kamrud, vice president of Research and Chief Scientific Officer at Harrisvaccines, who led the company’s development and application of RNA Particle Technology.

Recently we have been seeing reports of poultry being smuggled into Vietnam from China.

As a result of this, there has been a new clade of H5N1 that has had no effective vaccinations against it and it has spread rapidly through several districts in Vietnam as a result.

Today we see that Vietnam has now developed a new vaccine that is effective against this new H5N1 strain and so far testing is proving positive.

With regard to the cases of H3N2v that appeared to emerge and according to the CDC were related to county fair swine displays, continued releases of genetic sequencing from the USDA serious conflict with the CDC's asertions.

The question has repeatedly been asked what motive could the CDC have for biasing their data and so rediculously standing by those asertions in the face of unquestionable proof that their assertions are absolutely and completely wrong.

This last paragraph makes this very clear.

What is of even greater concern is why the CDC isnt being openly challenged regarding this unacceptable and unprofessional execution of their duties and responsibilities to the people that they are supposed to be acting for, the general community.

If they cany get it right and they are unable to act in the interests of the community then their relevance must be questioned, and the continuation of their very existance must also be questioned as if they are not protecting the community and can no longer be trusted to be above suspicion then they must be replaced with an organization that can fulfill that role.

The discordance also raises concerns that the CDC focus on agricultural fairs during the influenza off season is creating a serious undercount in H3N2v cases infected via human to human transmission.

Acording to Dr. Peiris, director of the Center of Influenza Research at the University of Hong Kong, in this next article, he sees H5N1 as now being a endemic problem for us all, and explains his reasons why.

H5N1 Called an Entrenched Threat to Human HealthBy: DOUG BRUNK, Family Practice News Digital Network

SAN FRANCISCO – The pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus remains entrenched in poultry in many countries and is unlikely to be eradicated, according to Dr. Malik Peiris.

"Over the past 15 years the virus has spread through Asia and to part of Africa. Even this year there have been poultry outbreaks in about nine countries, especially in Egypt but also in Asia and Indonesia," said Dr. Peiris, director of the Center of Influenza Research at the University of Hong Kong. "That, I think, is the real cause for concern."

So far, human disease has been uncommon, but the potential for human exposure to H5N1 is massive, he said. The reasons for viral spread are multifactorial, including the prevalence of backyard flocks of poultry and game birds, which are extremely common in parts of Asia, and the fact that the virus can infect ducks. "These ducks are moved from paddy field to paddy field," he said. "They graze on fallen rice in these paddy fields, and they move the virus without any ill effect to themselves. Live poultry markets are also a reservoir and amplifier. Some lineages of this virus can be moved long distances through migration of wild birds, but it is not clear whether wild birds are a true reservoir of this virus."

Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences are refusing to be vaccinated against influenza, claiming that the vaccine in use is outdated and of no worthwhile use.

Influenza scare at AIIMS as doctors

NEW DELHI: AIIMS may be staring at a potential outbreak of influenza-like illnesses. Most doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences have refused to take the preventive vaccination against the influenza virus as, they claim, the vaccine is outdated and ineffective.

"World Health Organization (WHO) issues the guidelines after an extensive research each year on the potential strains of virus that can cause pandemics and the type of vaccine to be used. The recommendation for 2012-13 is a trivalent vaccine which covers three potentially pandemic causing viruses giving maximum protection. However, AIIMS has been using only the outdated monovalent vaccine, pandyflu, from 2010 that covers only one type of virus," said Dr Deepak Damodaran, vice-president of the AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association. He said the vaccines were reformulated each year due to the changing strains of the virus.

Readers will remember the controversy that emerged surrounding the research that was conducted on H5N1 and its deliberate mutating to become H2H transmissible.

Following that controversy there was originally a 60 day freeze placed on further research, while various ethical matters were given the time to be assesed and discussed regarding this type of research.

That period has now passed and there is again some commentary from several sources looking to re-commence that research.

This article comes from the two original researchers.

ABSTRACT
A voluntary 60-day pause on avian H5N1 influenza virus transmission research was announced in January 2012 by the international community of influenza scientists engaged in this work to provide time to explain the benefits of such work and the risk mitigation measures in place. Subsequently, the pause was extended to allow for time for review of the biosafety and biosecurity conditions. After almost 8 months, these conditions have been met in some countries and are close to being met in others. Because H5N1 virus transmission studies are essential for pandemic preparedness, researchers who have approval from their governments and institutions to conduct this research safely under appropriate biosecurity conditions should resume this important work.

The views expressed in this Commentary do not necessarily reflect the views of the journal or of ASM.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
The saga of the CDC's stance on the transmission of H3N2v via county fairs continues.

This next article taks a look at the sequencing evidence that proves that the CDC has and continues to be out of step with the facts.

WHY?

The above graph is from the upcoming EID paper, “Outbreak of Influenza A (H3N2) Variant Virus Infection among Attendees of an Agricultural Fair, Pennsylvania, USA, 2011” which described lab confirmed and suspect H3N2v cases at the Washington County fair in Pennsylvania in August, 2011. The three confirmed cases were reported previously. The index case (2F), A/Pennsylvania/09/2011, was infected with H3N2v with an H1N1pdm09 M gene. The sequence was closely related to a July case in Indiana, A/Indiana/08/2011, who had no swine exposure. Both cases were described in an MMWR report, which noted sequence differences between the two cases which discounted a common source. However, the two additional cases (both 8F), had sequences which were more closely related to each other (A/Pennsylvania/10/2011 and A/Pennsylvania/11/2011) and the Indiana sequences raising concerns that the novel H3N2v was circulating in humans, and the Pennsylvania cases were due to independent introductions.

The CDC investigation identified four additional cases who were under the age of 4 and had H3N2v antibodies, which were classified as probable cases. Moreover, influenza-like illness was identified in 82 additional cases, which strongly support human to human transmission. Only one symptomatic swine was identified at the fair, and was removed in one day. Since the number of confirmed or suspect cases was high, and was due to multiple introductions, a swine source for these cases was unlikely.

The WHO has reported that there have been no new human cases of H5N1 diagnosed since the 10th of September 2012, which is very good news.

However, in the next paragraph or this report they then go on to make assertions that appear to come from the CDC as they are in stark contrast to the story that gene sequencing has revealed in relation to H3N2v in America in recent times.

With the approaching Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, special attention is being given for this years pilgrimage as there have been several dangerous diseases identified that could be bought from many and varied places and cause serious health consequences with this massive mixing of humanity.

The Hajj: updated health hazards and current recommendations for 2012
------------------------------------------------------------

This year [2012] the Hajj will take place during [24-29 Oct 2012]. Recent outbreaks of Ebola haemorrhagic fever in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, cholera in Sierra Leone, and infections associated with a novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia and Qatar required review of the health recommendations of the 2012 Hajj. Current guidelines foresee mandatory vaccination with quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine for all pilgrims and yellow fever and poliomyelitis vaccine for pilgrims from high-risk countries. Influenza vaccine is strongly recommended.

The annual Hajj is one of the greatest assemblies of humankind on earth. Each year, 3 million Muslims attend the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Of these, 1.8 million non-Saudi Arabians usually come from overseas countries, and 89 per cent (1.6 millions) of them arrive by air [1]. Pilgrims come from more than 180 countries worldwide, and about 45 000 pilgrims each year arrive to Saudi Arabia from the European Union [2].

One might be forgiven for wondering if this investigation might have a biased side to it in as much as the predominant opinions came from those who either make, or are encouraged to recommend these current vaccines and when compared with actual data on effectivenes, results might reveal differing results, further supporting this original investigation done by the University of Minnesota.

Oct 15, 2012 (CIDRAP News) – The world needs much better influenza vaccines, but the quest for them faces a formidable barrier: overconfidence about the effectiveness of existing influenza vaccines.

So runs the essential message of a new report from University of Minnesota researchers who conducted an exhaustive study of the flu vaccine landscape and interviewed scores of experts in all aspects of flu vaccine research, development, production, policy, and use.

On the 5th of October we reported this news of an outbreak of H1N1 in Nepal.

It appears that Nepal is having to deal with a new and serious outbreak of H1N1, the first since 2009.

To date there have been 24 deaths from this outbreak.

Swine flu virus, called pandemic influenza A(H1N1)pdm9, has been detected in the Nepali capital and 3 other districts outside the capital, doctors at the Sukraraj Tropical & Infectious Disease Hospital in Kathmandu said Wednesday [3 Oct 2012]. Doctors confirmed the outbreak of swine flu virus [infection] after the virus was detected in blood samples collected in the capital and the country's mid-western districts of Chitwan, Sindhuli and Khotang. Prior to this outbreak, H1N1 virus was seen in Nepal in 2009.

Doctor Gita Shakya, director of the National Public Health Laboratory of Kathmandu, said that people don't have to be worried about the disease as it can be cured if found in the preliminary stage. Dr. Shakya said the reason behind the resurgence of the virus in Nepal is that several districts of the country have recently been suffering from [an unidentified] viral fever.

Doctors said so far over a dozen people died due to viral fever outbreaks in Nepal. "Of the total 24 deaths from viral fever, some of them might have died due to late diagnosis of the swine flu virus," Dr. Shakya said.

Influenza cretainly seems to be on the increase early this year in the US.

Of note also are the differing strains that seem to be appearing almost simultaneously, this also includes a case of H1N1, which could be a bit unexpected at this early point in time.

State Confirms Flu Cases In Berrien County

Mike Arney Reporting

The flu has been confirmed in Berrien County. Michigan Department of Community Health spokeswoman Angela Minicucci says Berrien, Huron, Oakland, Saginaw and Washtenaw all have cases so far.

The majority are from the influenza B virus, with two of the influenza A H3N2 and one case of H1N1 from a few years ago. Minicucci says the vaccine available is designed to protect against all of those strains.

Niagara has also reported its first case of influenza for this season.

While indicating that this strain was Influenza A, the article fails to identify which specific strain this case actually is.

NIAGARA – It’s back.

Niagara has had its first laboratory-confirmed flu case, Niagara Region Public Health officials announced Friday afternoon.

It is really looking like its going to be a very busy flu season in the US this year, more cases, this time, 2 cases from Minnesota.

Its interesting that this strain is said not to be swine related, but the article again fails to indicate which H3 strain it was.

The point of importance here is that having been laboratory confirmed, should the case have been H3N2 then the N2 designation might have been able to be identified as with or without the "M" gene from H1N1, which would give some information as to how infectous this flu strain might be.

Minn. health officials confirm first influenza cases of season
