Gujarat Congress leader dies of swine flu
Published: Monday, Nov 12, 2012, 22:08 IST
Place: Vadodara | Agency: PTI

A Bharuch-based Congress leader died of swine flu at a hospital here today, health officials said. Gambhirsinh Parmar, general secretary of the Congress Bharuch district unit, was undergoing treatment in a hospital at Bharuch for severe cold and lung congestion. When his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a private hospital in the city a few days ago.

After he showed symptoms of swine flu, his blood samples were sent for testing to a laboratory where it was found to be positive, the officials said.

Thereafter, he was shifted to the government-run SSG Hospital, where he succumbed to H1N1 influenza, they said

For those interested, the Health Protection Agency in the UK has recently published their Strategic Framework for managing a pandemic outbreak in their area of responsibility.

This is lengthy 58 page document but it is a very comprehensive look at what is involved for an organization who has direct responsibility to the community to be adequately prepared for such a situation.

Highly recommended reading.

Though not directly related to H5N1 Avian Influenza, we regularly hear of the problems that the Vietmanese authorities experience with this disease.

It is likely for many of us to think that those authorities arent really trying.

This next article indicates the underlying sensitivies that those authorities do have towards to safety of their community and the works that they are undertaking to protect their peoples.

Strict penalty on acts of food violation

The fine amount willincrease for those using unlisted or toxic ingredients to prepare food items
A new law issued by the government recently specifies a very strict maximum penalty fine of VND100 million for anyone indulging in acts of food safety violation.

The law will however cover various levels of such acts with different amounts of penalty fines. Food violators can face revocation of food safety certificates and supervisors will have the authority to seize food samples and related facilities.

Those who use unmarked meats and excessive amounts of unsafe ingredients will be fined VND3-5 million.

Thank you MsTreeChick,

as far as this thread goes, well I guess its what I do, BUT, its everyones thread as I have so often said before.

I would like to think that if for some reason or another, like taking a break overseas next year for a few weeks, that this work would carry on .

This is what is planned, so as always, please come forward with any and all things that are appropriate and post away.

I do know that this is read by many and sometimes some of those readers drop a word of acknowledgement just to let us know that they are there and that is definately appreciated too.

Its also great to hear from you again too MzTreeChick.

Best wishes to you especially, but to all others as well.

News today from India is reporting another two fatalities from H1N1 Swine Flu.

Unfortunately it does appear that this is a steadily increasing situation there.

All we can hope for is that this outbreak doesent manage to get completely out of hand and get to epidemic proportions there.

Two more H1N1 deaths in Coimbatore, taking toll to nine

COIMBATORE: Two more H1N1 deaths were reported in the city on Wednesday taking the total death toll to nine since January 2012.

A 40-year-old woman who tested positive for H1N1 was referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital from Udumalpet, but breathed her last at the isolation ward of the government hospital early on Wednesday morning.

A 28-year-old woman staying near Singanallur was declared dead at a private hospital in the city where she was tested and found to be infected with H1N1 virus.

If readers choose to follow the link, then after the article there are several "comments" from readers there that relate to that article.

Some of those comments are worth the time to read, hence my posting the link.

It isnt often that we are able to get much news out of Indonesia.

They seem to want to isolate themselves from the rest of the world in relation to anything to do with H5N1 avian influenza, but this next article reveals that they continue to battle with H5N1 avian influenza.

More alarmingly is the information in this article about "apparently healthy birds" from within sick flocks being rapidly removed and sold off.

When governments go down the road of secrecy and denial these are the sorts of practices that are bound to eventuate from within affected communities, most likely a result of far too little information being made available because of the general secrecy adopted by authorities.

This all just adds to the hugely increased risk for H2H cross contamination with the eventual potential to allow the few mutations that are needed for H5N1 avian influenza to become a world wide pandemic.

Obviously these practices that Indonesia has adopted must be condemed for the potential danger they pose to the whole worlds population.

HPA publishes whole genome sequence from the UK case of novel coronavirus
13 November 2012

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has today published the completed whole genome sequence from the UK case of confirmed novel coronavirus, which was diagnosed on 22 September 2012. The patient continues to receive treatment in a London hospital.

Today’s publication of the full genome sequence will enable scientists to see how closely the UK case is linked to the first case of confirmed novel coronavirus, which was diagnosed in a patient from Saudi Arabia in June, and who subsequently died.

Analysis of the variation in the genomic sequences, coupled with the three month gap between patients infected with this coronavirus, indicate that there are probably independent sources of infection. Genomic analysis also indicates that the closest relative to this coronavirus was a bat virus identified in 2008 in the Netherlands.

Professor Maria Zambon, director of HPA’s reference microbiology services, said: “We are very pleased to be able to share the completed whole genome sequence data with the scientific community. It has been very technically challenging to try to recover and piece together an entire virus from miniscule amounts of material. However, understanding more about the diversity of virus will help with efforts to determine its origin as well as to develop strategies for treatment and prevention, such as vaccine development, should further cases emerge.

“There have been huge technological leaps since viruses such as H5N1 and SARS were discovered 10-15 years ago. The speed of response is a testament to the lessons learnt by the scientific and health community after SARS. Rapid disclosure of data enables diverse groups of scientists to study the virus in real time to help with the global health response, and HPA are pleased to contribute to that.”

There has been one further case of novel coronavirus infection identified in Saudi Arbia since the UK case was diagnosed in September which brings the total reported globally to three cases. No travel restrictions are in place but people returning from the Middle East with severe respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, should seek medical advice and mention which countries they have visited.

Professor Zambon continued: “With the close of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, we anticipate that there may be a small number of returning travellers to the UK who require investigation as possible cases of novel coronavirus, and we are fully prepared for this.

“The HPA has also contributed senior medical staff to World Health Organization missions to Qatar and Saudi Arabia to assist in the ongoing investigations in these countries, and is providing scientific assistance to several countries in the region.”

ENDS

Notes to editors:
1.The full genome sequence data has been published on the HPA website.
2.The partial genetic data and diagnostic information was published on the HPA’s website for the scientific community to use freely from 25 September 2012.
3.A suite of information has also been produced by the HPA for health professionals.

I have to admit it.

When reporting all the news that I engage in doing here, its always about somewhere else.

But when you read the following as I have just done, you get that awful "oh no, not my backyard" feeling and it really does bring home the realities of what this thread is all about.

But typical of MSM, they use H5N1 three times initially to put the wind up you...sensationalim and just for the shock value...immature and poor commentary is my description of this type of sloppy journalism.

The fact is that to date the strain in question has yet to be identified.

Bird flu strain hits NSW farm
DateNovember 15, 2012 - 12:35PM 86 reading nowRead later
Ben CubbyEnvironment Editor

An unidentified strain of bird flu has been detected at a hen farm near Maitland in the Hunter Valley, prompting authorities to quarantine about 50,000 chickens.

The suspected virus is not thought to be the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu that has killed 359 people worldwide in sporadic outbreaks since 2003.

Nonetheless, the 50,000 hens may have to be destroyed, the NSW Department of Primary Industries said.

A "first response team" of specialists from the department is on site to enforce the quarantine, while the CSIRO runs lab tests on samples of the virus, with results expected this afternoon.

In another article on the same influenza outbreak just being reported on here in Australia, we get a slightly different perspective and perhaps more credible reporting from our own Auntie.

I have to say how typical it is here for authorities to go off and shoot their mouths off claiming what they are yet to learn, ie that this is NOT H5N1, how do they know this when there has been no results from testing released.

This type of hollow reassurance to the greater community carry no credibility and only serve for us all to trust what we hear from these self apponted experts less than ever.

"Oh its just a little needle darling, it wont hurt!"

(BS stop lying. It will hurt, but not too much, ok?)

Grrrrr!!

Needed to blow a bit of steam off, please forgive me.

Chicken farm in lockdown with suspected bird flu
By Michael Condon

1A chicken farm in NSW has been put placed in quarantine due to a suspected case of avian influenza, known as bird flu.

The ABC understands the property is at Hinton in the Hunter Valley and there are 45,000 birds potentially affected.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries says the suspected virus is not the highly dangerous H5N1 strain that has gained worldwide attention

Well, I guess with this news, its up to each one of us to make our own judgement call on this vaccine.

And of note...two unanimous votes!

FDA panel endorses H5N1 vaccine with adjuvant
Robert Roos News Editor

Nov 15, 2012 (CIDRAP News) – A government advisory committee yesterday endorsed the safety and immunogenicity of an adjuvant-containing H5N1 influenza vaccine proposed for inclusion in the US pandemic emergency stockpile, signaling that it could become the first adjuvanted flu vaccine to win approval in the United States.

On two unanimous votes, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) said the immunogenicity and safety data on GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK's) H5N1 vaccine are adequate to support its licensure for use in adults. The aim is to strengthen the US stockpile for the threat of an H5N1 pandemic.

The vaccine contains GSK's proprietary adjuvant AS03, which is used in several other GSK vaccines licensed in other countries. One of these, Pandemrix, used in Europe during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, was linked with an increased risk of narcolepsy in children in Finland, Sweden, and Ireland.

Although the cases were from two distinct governorates, and from cases that developed symptoms more than three weeks apart, all three sequences were virtually identical.

The near identity in all three cases (which would almost certainly be closely related to the child who was also H5N1 confirmed, raises concerns that H5N1 is evolving toward more efficient transmission in humans in Egypt.

Phoebe medical professionals say they have seen more than 1000 patients in the last five days.

That's a 25 to 30 percent increase than their regular volume.

Wednesday alone 40 people tested positive for the influenza virus that causes the flu.

NSW to Cull 50,000 Chickens Due to Bird Flu Hit in Hunter Valley By Vittorio Hernandez | November 16, 2012 10:01 AM EST

Australia's woes with its farm animals raised for their meat appears to be unending. After 21,000 Australian sheep were culled in October in Pakistan over suspicions of bacterial contamination, another 50,000 chickens in New South Wales were quarantined this week by state authorities.

The hens were quarantined because of suspicion that an unidentified strain of bird flu hit a chicken farm in Hunter Valley. However, the suspected virus appears not to be of the same strain as the H5N1 which killed 359 people worldwide in different avian flu outbreaks since 2003.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries said on Friday that it will cull the 50,000 chickens after lab tests on the virus samples conducted by the Animal Health Laboratory of the CSIRO in Geelong confirmed it is the H7 strain.

You bet MzTreeChick

and with all other news added in there, news of war and conflict that might go viral at any time, is a picture that we should all be trying to get our minds around.

Serious times ahead, I think.

Time to think of family , friends and values.

We do not need this from our apparent "leaders".

They would choose to throw the pawns into the fire to enhance their personal positions and arrogant agendas, but at our expence as their pawns.

No more.

It is time for the real people of the world to make their own value judgements and in most cases reject the turmoil and conflict that their masters would demand that they persue.

These days we are far better educated and we know how the "system" is manipulated, with this knowledge we can now finally make truely informed decisions as to what the correct responses we should be enganging with our traditional foes to protect our countries and not to blindly protect our toxic regimes.

Unfortunately I honestly believe that the US has moved too far away from moral values and might now be guilty of occupying that disstasteful position.

Since the end of the cold war the US has actively advanced to cement its position as an insurmountable regime of ultimate power and with that has come absolute corruption of moral values.

The US today is a beast that assumes total capacity to rule the globe, but their administration will be very shocked when some of the other capable forces rise and challenge their assumed dominance.

And that is an act yet to be played out but will happen, it really is just a question of settling old scores and bringing back into balance the political landscape that this world seems to need just to survive.

That fact alone is really unfortunate because while we are all totally consumed with these concers we are not advancing as a race, and we should be.

Something to think about, I think.

Bird flu strain hits NSW farm
