The general picture is that apparently, ever since Laki, thorium content of magmas erupted in that area has been steadily increasing, up to and including the 2004 eruption... That all changed in 2011; the products of that eruption contained much less thorium than any eruption since Laki (if I'm remembering what I read correctly). This implies a new source of fresh magma, straight from the mantle... |
