New Zealand scientists are investigating active undersea volcanos, north of New Zealand. New images reveal the impacts of a significant eruption on the seafloor. NIWA research vessel Tangaroa has just mapped the Kermadec volcano that erupted 800 kilometres north east of Tauranga, on 19 July 2012, producing a pumice raft the size of Canterbury. Tangaroa recently embarked on a 23-day voyage of discovery in the Kermadecs, north of New Zealand, to study the volcanic chain that stretches for 1000 kilometres north from Bay of Plenty. "When we mapped the area yesterday", says NIWA ocean geology scientist Dr Joshu Mountjoy, "we found a new volcanic cone which has formed on the edge of the volcano, towering 240 metres above the crater rim. "It is fantastic to be able to record the change on the seafloor following these kinds of events." The Havre volcano eruption was strong enough to breach the ocean surface from a depth of 1100 metres. It produced clouds of ash visible by satellite, and a pumice raft that covered an area of 22,000 square kilometres. The voyage, led by NIWA's volcanologist Dr Richard Wysoczanski, comprises geology and biology scientists from NIWA, GNS Science, as well as students from Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Auckland. Dr Wysoczanski says, "One of the most exciting aspects of the cruise is the chance to map Havre volcano which, we have now confirmed, erupted in July. We know the shape of the volcano from previous research. Using the multibeam echosounder, we made a before and after comparison of the volcano to determine the size of the eruption and the change it has made to the seafloor." NIWA had previously mapped Havre volcano in 2002, showing a 1 kilometre high undersea mountain with a 5 kilometre wide, 800 metre deep central crater. This central steep-walled crater is a caldera, which is a type of volcano, like Lake Taupo, known to produce large and violent eruptions.

Sustained Aerosol Campaign Over Tasmania

I want to report a small flurry of chemtrails in northern Tasmania,
over the past month. It seems to be over now. I haven't seen a
chemtrail for a few days now. It is very unusual to get trails here.
This was certainly the first sustained campaign I've seen in the
two years I've been here. I have lived here from 1983-2000 as well,
and can't remember seeing one from all those years, (but only became
aware of the issue in 2005). Maybe my observation correlates
with something else you know?
I would send photos for the sake of the skeptics, but I've never
been good at sending them and I'm only on the net via this phone.
Also, sceptics are always going to sceptical!

For a few years, we lived in northeast Victoria, smack
between the two flight corridors, Melbourne-Sydney and
Sydney-Melbourne.
The main thing we noted was a correlation between chemtrails
and an anomolous dearth [lack] of rainfall.
It's my opinion, that the 12-year-long drought was designed to force
small farmers off their land.
The new water allocation laws care of Australian PM, John Howard,
the hero of the Telstra sell-off and the Port Arthur Massacre, also
contribute to the transfer of land to the corporate farms, in my
opinion.
Chemtrails in Tasmania tend to be turned on and off, in short
bursts and in different places, no other discernable pattern.
A few years ago there were a couple of websites praising the
chemtrail pilots as heros for saving the planet from global warming.
These seem to have been part of a scheme to justify weather control,
but have become redundant, because people didn't care anyway, as
there was not enough warming to be a problem. I think one of the
main purposes of the global warming scare is to justify weather
control, which is already in full swing.
It all shows what a bunch of shitheads our beloved leaders are.
They are damning their own children, as well as ours.

October 27, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand scientists investigating an active undersea volcano that erupted three months ago have discovered significant changes to the seafloor. Niwa research ship Tangaroa has mapped the Kermadec volcano that erupted 800km northeast of Tauranga on July 19, producing a pumice raft the size of Canterbury. The eruption was strong enough to breach the ocean surface from a depth of 1100 meters. It was captured by a Nasa satellite, and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion patrol spotted the pumice on their way back home from Samoa. Niwa’s volcanologist Dr Richard Wysoczanski, who is leading the 23-day expedition, said there had been volcanic activity every year for the past decade, but this was the largest by far. “It is a substantial eruption. Had it occurred on land in New Zealand, it would have been a bit of a disaster.” The volcanic caldera, which is like Lake Taupo, known to produce large and violent eruptions, spewed up to 10,000 more material than the Mt Tongariro eruption on August 6, he said. It was mapped in 2002, showing a 1km-high undersea mountain with a 5km wide, 800-metre deep central crater. This week, scientists found a new volcanic cone which has formed on the edge of the volcano, towering 240 meters above the crater rim. They also found one side of the caldera wall is bulging in towards the volcano’s centre, indicating where an eruption may occur in the future or it may lead to an undersea avalanche. Several cubic kilometers of new material has also been added to the volcano, with large volumes of freshly erupted pumice accumulating on the caldera floor, raising it by up to 10 meters. “We couldn’t find any biology on the floor and the immediate vicinity has been completely wiped out,” Wysoczanski said. Fresh volcanic rocks, up to beach ball size, will be brought back to Niwa for analysis. Tangaroa embarked on the expedition to study the volcanic chain that stretches for 1000km north from Bay of Plenty. It is due back in Wellington on November 1. –Stuff

October 27, 2012 – CLIMATE – The steady and dramatic decline in the sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean over the last three decades has become a focus of media and public attention. At the opposite end of the Earth, however, something more complex is happening. A new NASA study shows that from 1978 to 2010 the total extent of sea ice surrounding Antarctica in the Southern Ocean grew by roughly 6,600 square miles every year, an area larger than the state of Connecticut. And previous research by the same authors indicates that this rate of increase has recently accelerated, up from an average rate of almost 4,300 square miles per year from 1978 to 2006. “There’s been an overall increase in the sea ice cover in the Antarctic, which is the opposite of what is happening in the Arctic,” said lead author Claire Parkinson, a climate scientist with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. “However, this growth rate is not nearly as large as the decrease in the Arctic.” The Earth’s poles have very different geographies. The Arctic Ocean is surrounded by North America, Greenland and Eurasia. These large landmasses trap most of the sea ice, which builds up and retreats with each yearly freeze-and-melt cycle. But a large fraction of the older, thicker Arctic sea ice has disappeared over the last three decades. The shrinking summer ice cover has exposed dark ocean water that absorbs sunlight and warms up, leading to more ice loss. On the opposite side of the planet, Antarctica is a continent circled by open waters that let sea ice expand during the winter but also offer less shelter during the melt season. Most of the Southern Ocean’s frozen cover grows and retreats every year, leading to little perennial sea ice in Antarctica. Using passive-microwave data from NASA’s Nimbus 7 satellite and several Department of Defense meteorological satellites, Parkinson and colleague Don Cavalieri showed that sea ice changes were not uniform around Antarctica. Most of the growth from 1978 to 2010 occurred in the Ross Sea, which gained a little under 5,300 square miles of sea ice per year, with more modest increases in the Weddell Sea and Indian Ocean. At the same time, the region of the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas lost an average of about 3,200 square miles of ice every year. Parkinson and Cavalieri said that the mixed pattern of ice growth and ice loss around the Southern Ocean could be due to changes in atmospheric circulation. Recent research points at the depleted ozone layer over Antarctica as a possible culprit. Ozone absorbs solar energy, so a lower concentration of this molecule can lead to a cooling of the stratosphere (the layer between six and 30 miles above the Earth’s surface) over Antarctica. At the same time, the temperate latitudes have been warming, and the differential in temperatures has strengthened the circumpolar winds flowing over the Ross Ice Shelf. “Winds off the Ross Ice Shelf are getting stronger and stronger, and that causes the sea ice to be pushed off the coast, which generates areas of open water, polynyas,” said Josefino Comiso, a senior scientist at NASA Goddard. -Space Daily

At the other end of the globe; nearly the opposite effect occurs. October 28, 2012 – CANADA - After barreling across the Pacific Ocean for hours, a tsunami spawned by an earthquake in Canada struck the Hawaiian Islands. Waves between 3 and 7 feet were expected to lash the islands beginning about 10:28 p.m. Saturday (4:28 a.m. Sunday ET), the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The first waves to hit Honolulu didn’t seem much stronger than usual. But scientists said don’t be fooled by the initial waves, which often aren’t the biggest. “It’s not just one wave, it’s a succession of waves,” Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the center, told reporters. “The following waves, I am sure, will be bigger.” But he noted that the tsunami will not be as significant as the devastating quake and tsunami that killed thousands in Japan in March 2011. Local television showed images of bumper-to-bumper traffic on roads leading from the coast to inner ground. About 80,000 people live in evacuations zones in the island of Oahu, the island where Honolulu is located. John Cummings, spokesman for Honolulu Emergency Management, said officials have opened 26 centers for evacuees. “All islands and all shorelines will be affected when it comes in,” Cummings said. Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle urged residents who are already on higher ground to not clog traffic. Officials expressed concerns about emergency vehicles getting by in heavy traffic. But the tsunami warning came at an unfortunate time — when thousands of revelers packed streets in Honolulu for the annual Hallowbaloo festival. Even Hawaiians accustomed to tsunami warnings spared no effort in bracing for the worst. Honolulu resident Victoria Shioi filled her bathtub with water, set her refrigerator to the coldest setting and gathered candles in case of water or power outages. The tsunami was spawned by an earthquake in western British Columbia, prompting a local tsunami warning and sending some residents toward higher ground. “A (magnitude) 7.7 is a big, hefty earthquake — not something you can ignore,” Fryer said. “It definitely would have done some damage if it had been under a city.” Instead, the quake struck about 139 kilometers (86 miles) south of Masset on British Columbia’s Queen Charlotte Islands. No major damage was reported. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for western British Columbia from Vancouver to the southern panhandle of Alaska. A 4.4 earthquake jolted the lower North Island early this morning.

The quake, which was centred 30km southwest of Whanganui, struck at 1.44am and had a focal depth of 19 kilometres, the GeoNet website reported.

It was felt throughout the western side of the North Island, between New Plymouth and Wellington, according to reports sent to GeoNet.

Early yesterday morning a 4.7 earthquake struck in the same area..

The earlier quake struck at 2.37am, was 35km deep and centred 25km south-west of Whanganui.

The earthquake struck at 2.37am, was 35km deep and centred 25km south-west of Whanganui. Geonet reported the intensity of the quake as moderate.

The quake was felt in several places around Taranaki including, New Plymouth, Oakura, Waitara, Urenui, Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera.

It was reported as far north as Auckland and as far south as Picton.

Volcanoes In New Zealand

There are many old legends that say a cluster of things come together when they come. One of the common sets is “volcanoes and earthquakes” often listed along with various weather disasters and comets or rocks from the sky.

Oddly, (or perhaps not so oddly…) that looks to be starting now.

After A very long time of being quiet, several volcanic areas are starting to wake up a bit. New Zealand is one of them.

When I visited there some decades back, the folks where nearly apologetic that the volcanic activity was low. The hot springs tour was still interesting, but most of the presentation was about “what used to happen” with respect to volcanoes. Now, inside a few days, we’ve had 2 volcanoes light up.

I don’t expect much more than a resumption of the ‘typical’ volcanic activity of prior centuries, but it would be worth watching those very old cones at Christchurch and Auckland for any precursor quake activity.

Also of note: There’s usually a few years lag between a great quake in a subduction zone and volcanoes going off behind it. We can likely expect some Indonesian volcanoes “soon” and a large one in Japan in a half dozen years.

When will the next big eruption happen?

After all, though there have been 25 "little" volcanic eruptions in the central North Island in geologically recent times, it is 1800 years since the last big one.

Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) volcanologist Dr Gill Jolly says Ruapehu's 1995 eruption, although impressive to the layman, was just one of the little ones.

"We're talking 1000 to a million times less than the amount involved in Taupo," she says.

The Taupo she refers to is the Taupo eruption of 1800 years ago, which is still considered the most violent known in the world in the last 5000 years. But even that pales when compared with the Oruanui eruption of 26,500 years ago, which first helped form Lake Taupo.

That eruption buried much of the central North Island in up to 200 metres of ignimbrite – what most people would consider to be lava flows, made up of gas, pumice and ash – and changed the shape of the country forever. The ignimbrite reached almost to Cambridge, covering everything in its 133-kilometre path from where today the waters of Lake Taupo fill what is left of the collapsed volcano, or caldera.

A caldera forms when large eruptions drain the magma reservoir beneath the volcano, causing the surrounding ground to collapse into the void. Add water and you have Lake Taupo.

According to GNS, the Taupo volcano first began erupting about 300,000 years ago and it is a given that it will do so again one day. A repeat eruption of the size of either the Oruanui or Taupo eruptions would "devastate most of the North Island", according to GNS.

Taupo is part of a belt of active volcanoes known as the Taupo Volcanic Zone that runs from Ruapehu northeast to White Island and on towards the Kermadec Islands. Together they form part of a chain that includes most of the world's 600 active volcanoes in a ring circling the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. The ring follows the shape of the Pacific tectonic plate, which meets the Australian tectonic deep under New Zealand, and includes volcanoes such as Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines, Mt Saint Helens in Washington, Mt Fujiyama in Japan, Krakatoa in Indonesia and Kilauea in Hawaii.

Jolly says the denser Pacific plate is slowly moving under the Australian plate below New Zealand, and twisting relative to it. They are moving about 36mm a year.

Volcanoes are basically holes in the Earth's crust caused when two tectonic plates collide. The meeting of those plates – fault lines – is responsible for cataclysmic events such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions and involves hard-to-comprehend forces. For example, a 7.8 magnitude quake in Fiordland in March effectively nudged the bottom of the South Island 30 centimetres closer to Australia.

Recent global events, mostly centred on the Pacific Ring of Fire, have raised questions about whether they are linked – the tsunami which hit Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga on September 30, the 7.6 magnitude quake that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on the same day, another 7.1 magnitude quake that hit Java – also in Indonesia – on September 2.

To the untrained, it could easily be assumed they were all somehow connected.

And while there seems to be a link, Jolly says they are not directly related. It is simplistic to think there is a common cause, she says. Like all good scientists, she deals only in what can be proved, and a connection between those events cannot.

"Statistics are very difficult," she says. "It's all part of the same system but the problem is connecting them.

"We've got a lot of earthquakes and not very many volcanic eruptions."

As well, when considering such a small time frame – geologically speaking – statistics would indicate there will be a period of time when a lot of events happen close to each other.

"So many different factors contribute to how a volcano works," Jolly says.

"We need to be careful when we have a lot of quakes and volcanic eruptions.

"It's a matter of looking at the observables."

Those observables include monitoring seismic activity, ground movement and gas.

Chemistry measurements are made on Mt Ruapehu to ascertain gas levels and mixtures, but there are none around Taupo, though the lake does have seven seismographs and six continuous GPS (CGPS) stations dotted around it.

Seismographs are effective but can be influenced by other sources of ground vibration, so their sites need to be carefully chosen. Jolly says early seismographs "would have filled a room". Those used today are much smaller and are basically metal weights suspended in a coil of wire. When the ground moves, the weight does too, changing the electromagnetic field, which can then be measured.

In the last two months, those seismographs have recorded dozens of earthquakes in and around Lake Taupo, although Jolly says that is nothing unusual.

"Last year we had an increase in activity with a few hundred earthquakes in a couple of months," she says.

"One was 4.4 (magnitude). There were a couple of threes but most were twos and ones. They were fairly regular for a couple of months."

Advancing technology is far more able to measure tremors than it used to be and Jolly says that though New Zealand had been monitoring its volcanoes since the 1960s, there had been rapid improvements in the last decade.

"For 10 years it's been good, before that it was okay, before the 1960s there was nothing."

Experts are also using technology to get people to report when they feel earthquakes, through the Geonet website, www.geonet.net.nz.

The website lists all recorded earthquakes – there have been seven this month already – and Jolly says members of the public are always keen to report tremors.

"If people feel an earthquake, people report it," she says.

The stronger the quake, the more reports that come in.

She says the earthquakes around Taupo last year were an indication that the Taupo volcano is "slumbering, not dormant".

The CGPS units measure ground deformation, the change in shape of land that can take place before, during or after an eruption. Deformation happens when magma enters or leaves a volcano vent. Increases in ground deformation can signal the start of a new eruptive episode.

Jolly says that as the pressure builds underground, the area surrounding the volcanic vent would be expected to rise and move away from the vent itself. The CGPS units are capable of accuracy to within millimetres and Jolly says they have measured the ground "moving up very slightly around the lake. It's small but noticeable and it tells us it's reacting."

During the 1994 eruption of the Rabaul caldera in Papua New Guinea, "there was seven metres of ground movement," Jolly says.

At Rabaul, an island sank into the sea, the bay was covered with floating pumice and volcanic material filled part of the harbour. Ash clouds produced severe lightning and heavy rain, which soaked into the ash fallout on the ground.

This made the ash heavier and caused buildings to collapse. The eruption also triggered flooding and mudflows.

According to a bulletin issued by the US Geological Survey on September 23, 1994, "the rains soaked the thick ash that has fallen on buildings, the combined weight has collapsed an estimated 80 per cent of the buildings in Rabaul. The ash is estimated to be at least 2.5 feet [76cm] thick throughout the city, with other areas having as much as 5-7 feet of accumulated ash."

The airport was closed permanently, five people died and 53,000 people were displaced.

Jolly says that while that could all happen in a matter of weeks from the first signs of activity, it was more likely to occur over months or even years.

"If we saw tens of centimetres of movement (around Taupo) I'd be worried, if it was metres, I'd be very worried," she says.

In 1922 there was a swarm of earthquakes around Taupo and the lake level subsided "by a couple of metres" but nothing more happened.

"If Taupo were to erupt, we would expect to see major ground deformation and thousands of earthquakes, not hundreds," Jolly says.

White Island's 2000 eruption followed a long period of activity and is one of "a couple" of eruptions Jolly has seen.

Even that eruption, though, was "effectively a burp", she says.

Despite all the monitoring taking place, scientists still have no way of accurately knowing when a volcano will erupt and Jolly doubts they will ever get to that stage.

Sometimes, volcanoes just erupt.

"Ruapehu in 2007 came out of the blue. Nothing we were monitoring gave any indication it would happen," she says.

"We won't get to a stage where we can predict," she says, although some volcanoes are more dependable than others. "Montserrat, you could set your time by it, although that is quite rare," and "Etna had a set pattern".

Even with the best monitoring in the world scientific theories about when an eruption may occur remain just that, theories.

And though the chances of a Taupo eruption remain slim, when it does one day happen, it will have "big consequences," Jolly says.

"Seventy kilometres around would be total obliteration. But I can't imagine it in my lifetime."

A bigger risk, to the Waikato in particular, although just about as unlikely, is an eruption from one of Auckland's 50 volcanoes, with Rangitoto blowing its top just 600 years ago.

Direct fallout would be unlikely to affect the region but the human impact would be huge.

"The social consequences would be felt in Hamilton" as people fled Auckland.

A recent study on the impact of an eruption at Mt Eden showed Auckland's GDP would plummet in the aftermath, and Hamilton's would increase due to the increased population.

But, Jolly says, that is unlikely to happen any day soon.

Yes, I have been following those threads! All animals doing good here. My draft horse is still predicting bad winter weather, so I have been trying to deal with that and make sure we have enough food and supplies. Especially if the SHTF scenario hits. We had a really late summer here. It was off by a month, didn't have much of a fall or spring. Really strange and everyone around here have been talking about it...Hope all has been good for you!

Submarine eruption from Havre volcano built a new volcanic cone

New Zealand scientists investigating an active Kermadec undersea volcano Havre discovered significant changes to the seafloor during last eruption on July 19, 2012. The eruption was captured by a Nasa satellite, and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion patrol spotted the huge pumice area on their way back home from Samoa (read our earlier report)

Scientists, aboard Niwa research ship – Tangaroa (deepwater research vessel), used multibeam sonar to map the seamount and found evidence of a new volcanic cone, 240 m tall and reaching withing 1,100 m below sea level, built on the side of the large submarine caldera of Havre. Aside from new volcanic cone they also found one side of the caldera wall is bulging in towards the volcano’s centre, indicating where an eruption may occur in the future or it may lead to an undersea avalanche.

Niwa’s volcanologist Dr Richard Wysoczanski, who is leading the 23-day expedition, said there had been volcanic activity every year for the past decade, but this was the largest by far.

“It is a substantial eruption. Had it occurred on land in New Zealand, it would have been a bit of a disaster.”

The volcanic caldera, which is like Lake Taupo, known to produce large and violent eruptions, spewed up to 10,000 more material than the Mt Tongariro eruption on August 6, he said.
