Australian volcano about to erupt?

[link to www.australiangeographic.com.au]

A volcano on the Australian sub-Antarctic territory of Heard Island is showing signs of eruption.

ONE OF ONLY TWO active volcanoes in Australian territory is showing possible signs of eruption.

Satellite thermal imagery collected by NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) during the past month indicates volcanic activity is occurring at Big Ben, a volcano located on remote Heard Island, about 4100km southwest of Perth, in the sub-Antarctic.

Thermal anomalies at Mawson's Peak, the 2745m summit of Big Ben, were documented this year on 21 and 24 September, and 10 and 19 October using infrared data provided by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a key instrument aboard each of the two EOS satellites.

An image taken by one of the satellite's Advanced Land Imagers (ALI) on October 13 also shows a snow- and ice-free area at Mawson's Peak, indicating a possible hotspot in the volcano's crater

Lava flows represent one of the most significant volcanic hazards from basaltic monogenetic volcanoes, such
as spatter cones, scoria cones, maars, and tuff rings. They are common features emanating from parasitic
vents on the flanks of polygenetic volcanoes and in dominantly ‘flat-lying’ intraplate volcanic fields. The
Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) is a volcanic field that has been active for the last ca. 250 ka, hosting at least
50 monogenetic volcanoes. Morphometric parameters of lava flows, such as volume, length, thickness and
area, were used to quantify the potential lava-flow inundation susceptibility to New Zealand's most densely
populated area, the City of Auckland based on an airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Digital Surface Model (DSM). The morphometric parameters of fifteen studied flows included: average length of 2.5 km
(range 0.7–6.5 km), overall average thickness of 14.8 m (range 3.4–43.8 m), average of maximum thicknesses of 48.2 m (range 18.3–180.5 m), average area occupied of 5.1 km2
(range 0.4–25.1 km2
) and average
volume of 0.12 km3
(range 0.005–1 km3
). Based on these parameters and a LiDAR-derived DSM, the present
topography was classified into: sea, topographic depressions; low-lying areas prone to inundation by an average lava flow; buffer zones prone to inundation only by extremely thick lava flows; and peaks or ridges,
which are unlikely to be overtopped. In monogenetic fields, each new vent occurs in a new location, creating
uncertainty around the spatial location of the volcanic hazard. Thus, this research provides a general vent
location-independent approach to describe the lava flow susceptibility for a potentially active monogenetic
volcanic field. What this analysis reveals is that the City of Auckland can be divided into two distinct areas
with strongly different susceptibility to lava flow inundation. The southern part of the City is predominantly
flat, without hindrance to lava flow, whereas the hilly northern and central part has many ridges that can
limit or channelise lavas. These contrasting properties must be accounted for in scenario-based or probabilistic hazard and risk models developed for the AVF.

Basaltic, monogenetic volcanoes often produce lava flows with a
wide range in length and size (Felpeto et al., 2001; Harris & Rowland,
2001; Tucker & Scott, 2009). The length of lava flows is mostly dependent on the rate of effusion (Harris et al., 2007; Walker, 1973), the
total volume (Stasiuk & Jaupart, 1997), the crystallinity and viscosity
(Dragoni & Tallarico, 1994; Griffiths, 2000), the slope angle of the substratum (Favalli et al., 2009b) and other topographic features, such as
valleys (Rodriguez-Gonzalez et al., 2011). To quantify and express
such controlling conditions on lava flow emplacement, which are the
basic inputs required of lava flow simulation codes, remotely sensed
data are commonly used. For detection of active lava flows, the thermal

bands of various satellites, such as MODerate resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission
and Reflection radiometer (ASTER) and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper
are used (Ganci et al., 2012; Harris et al., 1998; Lombardo &
Buongiorno, 2006; Pieri & Abrams, 2005; Wright et al., 2004). These remote sensing data can provide information about the time-averaged
discharge rates of a lava flow, which is one of the major requirements
of lava flow simulations.
Lava flows related to monogenetic eruptions are commonly small
in volume (≤1 km3
) and affect small areas (a few square kilometers).
This small size requires at least medium (10–50 m) to high resolution
(≤10 m) imagery to map them accurately. Many types of topographic
data can be used to calculate lava flow volumes including Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) (Harris et al., 2010), Interferometric
Synthetic Aperture Radar (INSAR) (Mouginis-Mark & Garbeil, 2005),
ASTER stereo image-based Digital Surface Models, i.e. DSMs (Hirano

Scientists study how Earth’s oceans plunged the planet into a catastrophic big freeze
Posted on November 7, 2012

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

November 7, 2012 – CLIMATE - A giant flood of Arctic meltwater may have triggered an ancient 1,200-year-long chill nicknamed the “Big Freeze,” the last major cold age on Earth, a new study finds. These findings suggest that changes in the flow of water in the Arctic could suddenly alter the modern climate, study investigators added. Starting about 12,900 years ago, the Northern Hemisphere was abruptly gripped by centuries of cold, an era technically known as the Younger Dryas. Scientists have suggested this chill helped wipe out most of the large mammals in North America as well as the so-called Clovis people. The Big Freeze was not a glacial period, which is colloquially often called ice ages — it was a cold time in the relatively warm spans between glacial periods. Although researchers have suggested a cosmic impact might have set off this Big Freeze, the prevailing theory for the cause of the Younger Dryas was a vast pulse of freshwater— a greater volume than all of North America’s Great Lakes combined — that poured into the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The source of this flood was apparently the glacial Lake Agassiz, located along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which at its maximum 21,000 years ago was 6,500 to 9,800 feet thick and covered much of North America, from the Arctic Ocean south to Seattle and New York. “The flood was likely caused by the sudden breaking of an ice dam,” said researcher Alan Condron, a physical oceanographer at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “Prior to the flood, meltwater is thought to have drained into the Gulf of Mexico, down the Mississippi River. After the dam broke, the water rapidly flowed into the ocean via a different river drainage system.” This deluge would have diluted the circulation of saltwater in the North Atlantic, disrupting the ocean “conveyer belt” that cycles warm water up to the Arctic, where it cools and sinks and travels back south along the ocean floor. With less warm seawater moving poleward, temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere apparently plunged. –Daily Mail

The Milky Way’s black hole shoots out brightest flare ever
Posted on November 7, 2012

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

November 7, 2012 – SPACE - For some unknown reason, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy shoots out an X-ray flare about once a day. These flares last a few hours with the brightness ranging from a few times to nearly one hundred times that of the black hole’s regular output. But back in February 2012, astronomers using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory detected the brightest flare ever observed from the central black hole, also known as Sagittarius A*. The flare, recorded 26,000 light years away, was 150 times brighter than the black hole’s normal luminosity. What causes these outbursts? Scientists aren’t sure. But Sagittarius A* doesn’t seem to be slowing down, even though as black holes age they should show a decrease in activity. –Universe Today

MEDIA RELEASE

2 November 2012

Stunning solar eclipse soon visible over New Zealand

On the morning of the 14th November 2012 all of New Zealand will be treated to a fine partial eclipse of the Sun. An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun casting a shadow on the Earth.

For this eclipse, the further north you are in New Zealand, the more the Sun will appear to be covered by the Moon. From Auckland, maximum obscuration (coverage) will reach 87% and the Sun will appear as a brilliant bright crescent. In the far south of the country the obscuration will still reach a respectable 57% while the greatest coverage of the Sun will be seen from Northland's east coast where it will reach nearly 91%. The next eclipse with this amount of obscuration seen from New Zealand will not occur until 2028 and Auckland will not see a better solar eclipse until 2035.

The shadow of the Moon creates a 180km wide path of totality that travels from west to east across the Pacific, starting in northern Australia and passing about midway between New Zealand and New Caledonia. It continues eastward finishing just before reaching the coast of Chile. Norfolk Island is located right on the edge of totality with 98% obscuration. The northern parts of Australia are the only land areas that experience the total eclipse. Thousands of keen eclipse enthusiasts will be congregating in Queensland while others will be viewing the eclipse from cruise liners and aircraft positioned along the path of totality across the Pacific.

Stardome’s honorary astronomer, Dr Grant Christie, said ,"Solar eclipses don't happen every New Moon because the Moon's orbit about Earth is tilted by about 5 degrees relative to the Earth's orbit around the Sun. In most months the New Moon passes above or below the Sun so no eclipse occurs. But an eclipse will occur when the Moon happens to cross the plane of Earth's orbit close to times of New Moon."

From Auckland, the partial eclipse will start at 9.18am reaching maximum coverage at 10:28am and ending at 11.44am. These times will vary at a bit at other centres.

The Stardome at One Tree Hill will be open to the public on the morning of 14 November providing safe viewing of the eclipse through the special telescopes. For a gold coin donation visitors will be able to watch a short movie about solar eclipses in the impressive 360 degree planetarium theatre at Stardome.

Viewing the Sun directly without a safe solar viewer is very dangerous and can cause permanent blindness. Stardome is selling certified safe solar viewers via its shop and online shop and will have them for sale on the day. There won't be another chance to see an eclipse like this for another 16 years so, have your safe solar viewers at the ready and, if you get the chance, head to Stardome - Auckland’s home for observing the skies.

Dark morning in November

During a solar eclipse, the moon's apparent diameter is larger than the sun, blocking all direct sunlight for viewers on earth and turning day into darkness as the moon passes between earth and sun. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the earth.

This event will occur on 14 November around 10:30 AM and this time the maximum eclipse will be almost over New Zealand, passing 1100 miles to our east. The best place on the globe to see it from will be Cairns, followed by Norfolk Island and Auckland 4 hours after Cairns. Whilst Cairns gets 100% of the visual effect, Auckland will see 80% of the sun obscured, and Christchurch, 60%. See path below.

(courtesy [link to www.timeanddate.com] )

The cycle of solar and lunar eclipses around the earth repeats every 223 lunar months, which means 223 full Moons must be counted before earth, moon and sun are again in the same positions in the sky. It means these total solar eclipses occur every roughly 18 years. The last was in 1994 and the next will be in 2030.

This eclipse will be 12 hours before lunar perigee, and perigee eclipses should be respected. The 14 November is the day of new moon, the day the moon is third closest to earth for the whole year (perigee), and also in direct line ("node") with the sun. Consequently the moon will exert extra gravitational pull on earth not diminished by parallax. These factors allow increased turbulence to land sea and air. The 14th is also the first day of a kingtide that will last until the 16th.

Eclipses were feared in ancient times but much of the reason why has become lost in antiquity. Today it is an unrecognised science and if extreme weather arrives around an eclipse it is more likely to be called a fluke. However it will be found that eclipses are always in some way related to the area of a disaster, especially if the eclipse is visible in the predicted area of a disaster.

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Japan as a total solar eclipse occurred on March 29, 2006 and within 24 hours the satellite responsible for NZ's SKY Network Television failed. On the 31st a 6.1-mag earthquake struck western Iran. Following the August 1999 solar eclipse, destructive floods came to France and Italy, major earthquakes occurred in Turkey and Greece, and a huge cyclone hit India. Martinique’s Mt. Pelee eruption in 1902 was preceded by a total lunar eclipse.

Sometimes extreme events may occur a month or more either side of eclipse. For example the solar eclipse of 10 May 1994 may one month later have triggered the 1994 Arthurs Pass earthquake of 6.7mag (18 June) which was the largest on land in NZ for 65 years and which spawned over 12,000 seismic events over the next two years in Canterbury.

The Tangshan, China earthquake of 1976 may also be a good example, with an eclipse over Tangshan three months earlier. The same may hold true for the 1900 Galveston, TX hurricane that claimed over 6,000 lives, preceded by a solar eclipse just four months earlier. And yet again they all may be amazing coincidences.

Right now we are about three months out from 14 November. But there has already been activity beneath Mt Tongariro and White Island and a noticeable increase in earthquakes to the northeast of the North island close to the eclipse path. Stress and unsettlement may be brewing way down under the plates which may culminate in something larger between now and the eclipse.

(Update: the above paragraph mentioning Tongariro was written, along with the rest of this article, on 5 August. On 7 Aug, Mt Tongariro erupted, [link to www.nzherald.co.nz] )

Total eclipses can also bring sudden temperature drops. During the 7 March 1970 eclipse the temperature in Norfolk, Virginia fell by 11degC. In the eclipse of 11 July 1991 the temperature in Baja California dropped 7degC. During total eclipse if there is a lot of moisture aloft, the dew point may be reached very quickly as temperature drops and extensive sheets of heavy cloud may form.

So the situation is worth a warning, but probably not a panic warning. However, as always, exact magnitude and location is unpredictable and the most we can say is that the time is a risk-filled one. Vigilance should be observed in areas showing the greatest seismic murmurings and Civil Defence should be alerted. Whenever there is a significant shake there are also smaller shakes in other prone zones.

Due to significant moon positions alone we can say that over the kingtide+close perigee+new moon+southern declination interval of 13-16 November, heavy rain and flooding are likely from Central Plateau southwards, expected to cover much of the South Island. The widespread heavy rain may be associated with significant electrical activity, with squalls and thunderstorms also affecting central New Zealand.

Consequently the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges could receive torrential rain, flooding may affect parts of Wellington and rivers may burst banks in Wanganui, southern Wairarapa, Buller and Fiordland. Also, by the 17 November, westerlies may reach gale force in central and eastern regions. The November eclipse will probably add weight to these possibilities and there is plenty of time now to prepare.

Update on 23 October: many earthquakes have been occurring in the Gisborne/BoP/central North island zone. The shakes are happening not only in Gisborne but all along the East Cape and BoP because that is the closest to the eclipse path on 14 November. To some extent too, the rest of the east of the country is also seeing action. This flurry is likely to cease after the eclipse event. But between now and then we will see many more in the east and especially the North Island's east. One signal was the 5.5mag shake in Taupo on 14 October, close to the October perigee, and exactly one month (moon minicycle) from the 14 November eclipse. It was the type of dress-rehearsal seen often with eclipses. Christchurch should be safe, with smaller shakes and magnitudes unlikely to go beyond high 4's, but the NE and SW of NZ may get the larger events.

Two more Canadian oil explorers appear in Hawke’s Bay

Nov. 7 (BusinessDesk) -Two new Canadian oil and gas explorers have appeared in New Zealand, taking a 965 square kilometre onshore licence area in Hawke’s Bay, in what appears to be the first outcome from the government’s new “block offer” policy.

Marauder Resources East Coast has won the exploration licence for Petroleum Exploration Permit 53806 in a joint venture with Canadian Overseas Petroleum to explore “unconventional” shales in the Whangai formation, in the central Hawke’s Bay.

The licence area sits between two others being explored by fellow Canadian TAG Oil, near Gisborne in the southern Hawke’s Bay, both of which have prompted opposition from local environmental groups who fear TAG and its Texan partner, Apache, plan to use hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, to unlock hydrocarbons held in shale formations.

Both Marauder and COP are Calgary-based, junior players in global oil and gas exploration. Marauder has interests already in Canada, the Middle East and the Gulf of Aden, while COP’s interests to date have been in West Africa and the North Sea.

In a statement issued in Canada in Nov. 2, COP says Marauder will operate the licence for the first year, after which COP will assume ownership for the remainder of the initial five year licence period.

Both are listed on Toronto Stock Exchange, as are TAG and another Canadian entrant to the local market, NZ Energy Corp, which has onshore Taranaki and East Coast interests.

“The East Coast Basin onshore New Zealand contains a number of large oil and gas accumulation targets focusing on unconventional resource plays within the Paleocene-to-Cretaceous aged Whangai and Waipawa shales,” COP said in a statement to the TSX.

“Offsetting permit holders in the basin include TAG Oil and NZ Energy, both of which have had independent third party evaluators assign shale oil resource potential of 12.6 and 20.9 billion barrels original oil in place respectively.”

COP plans to commission a third party engineering study as a first step assessing potential in its licence area, where the Whangai formations look most promising.

The New Zealand government began a new policy of offering specified exploration blocks this year. The offer round closed recently, and the official agency, New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals, has not yet announced outcomes.
