Volcanologists have warned about impending eruption from one of the most active volcanoes of New zealand, Mt. Ruapehu in central North Island. As a result, New Zealand authorities have instructed climbers to stay away from the peak of Mt. Ruapehu. As per news reports, area within 2km of the center of Crater Lake has been declared summit hazard zone and should be avoided. According to Steve Sherburn, GNS Science duty volcanologist,

“We are monitoring Ruapehu closely, but it often does not give any immediate warning that it is going to erupt. We think that the temperature a few hundred metres beneath Crater Lake is about 800C, but the lake itself is only about 20C. This suggests the vent is partly blocked which may be leading to a pressure build-up beneath Crater Lake. A sudden release of the pressure may lead to an eruption.”

As a precautionary measure, aviation alert level around the central North Island has been raised to yellow – suggesting unrest above background levels. Volcanic alert level remains unchanged at “signs of unrest”.

Mt. Ruapehu is a complex stratovolcano that has formed during at least 4 cone-building episodes dating back to about 200,000 years ago. It is believed that several subplinian eruptions took place at Ruapehu between about 22,600 and 10,000 years ago, though pyroclastic flows have not been frequent at Ruapehu. Historically, Crater Lake has been the only opening at the broad summit of the crater.

Climbers and trampers have been told to avoid Mt Ruapehu's summit zone after scientists warned the mountain could erupt without warning.

On the mountain though, it's business as usual.

Pressure was building up under the Crater Lake on Mt Ruapehu, increasing the likelihood of an eruption in the coming weeks, GNS Science said yesterday.

Measurements taken on the volcano over the past few weeks indicated eruptions were more likely "within weeks, not months".

A sudden release of pressure built up under the lake may lead to an eruption.

The Conservation Department issued a warning for trampers and climbers to avoid the summit hazard zone, a two kilometre area from the centre of the Crater Lake.

"We recommend that guiding companies do not take people into the zone. Any other climbers, trampers and walkers should not enter the zone," DOC Ruapehu area manager Jonathon Maxwell said. But Whakapapa ski field summer operations manager Callum Learmont said alert level fluctuations were simply part of life on an active volcano.

Their guided tours to view the crater lake don't kick in until December 15 but he said at the current alert level those would still go ahead.

"At this stage the alert level is one and we're pretty comfortable with that but obviously we monitor it and take it seriously," he said.

"It's something you take into account. You plan for it and it's part of your operation. It's something you have to work your way through."

If the situation worsened they'd take advice from GNS Science, who they're in close contact with, but at the moment things are running as per usual.

DOC warned that people in the area should be aware of an increased possibility of lahars on the tracks and especially when approaching the Whangaehu, Wahianoa, Mangaturuturu and Whakapapaiti streams.

"They should be conscious of potential lahar noise from upstream, and make their way across these streams quickly," DOC warned.

Mt Ruapehu, which last erupted in 2007, usually did not give any immediate warning of an eruption, GNS Science vulcanologist Steven Sherburn said.

Pressure build-up was thought to have caused the 2007 eruption and a smaller eruption in 2006.

The aviation colour code has increased from green to yellow as a warning for those flying over the region, but the volcanic alert level remained at level 1. Yellow indicates signs of elevated unrest, while level 1 indicates signs of volcanic unrest

GNS Science believed the temperature a few hundred metres beneath the crater was about 800 degrees Celsius but the lake itself was only 20degC.

"This suggests the vent is partly blocked which may be leading to a pressure build-up beneath Crater Lake."

Small earthquakes have been occurring about 5km beneath the summit of Ruapehu since late October, but it was not known whether they were related to the increased temperature below the crater, GNS vulcanologist Brad Scott said.

"We perceive them to be completely unrelated at this stage," he said.

However, the quakes had the potential to build up processes and push magma further to the surface, which would further increase the likelihood of an eruption, he said.

GNS constantly monitors Ruapehu and had discovered over the last few weeks that the chemistry and gases within the Crater Lake were changing, Mr Scott said.

Ruapehu experienced a small scale eruption in 2007 and a series of large scale eruptions in 1995 and 1996.

All facilities, roads, walking tracks, alternative routes lower on Mt Ruapehu, and other activities on the mountain were still operating.

Prime Minister John Key says he was made aware a few days ago that there was increased activity on Mt Ruapehu.

GNS Science revealed today the likelihood of the volcano erupting over the next few weeks had increased.

Duty volcanologist Steven Sherburn said changes in measurements over the last few weeks indicated eruptions are "more likely over the next weeks to months''.

"We're monitoring Ruapehu closely, but it often doesn't give any immediate warning that it's going to erupt,'' Dr Sherburn said.

"This suggests the vent is partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure buildup beneath Crater Lake. A sudden release of the pressure may lead to an eruption.''

As a result, the Aviation Colour Code has increased from Green to Yellow. Code Yellow indicates a volcano is experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels.

Mr Key said he was advised a few days ago there was some movement and an increase in temperature on the mountain.

"I haven't had any advice today on that issue but they did alert me a couple of days ago it might be an issue,'' he said.

GNS said small earthquakes have been occurring about 5km beneath the summit area of Ruapehu since late October, but these may not be directly related to the high temperatures beneath Crater Lake because the heat is much deeper.

A build-up of pressure beneath Crater Lake is thought to have caused the 2007 eruption and a smaller eruption in 2006.

Mt Tongariro burst into activity in August this year, when the Te Maari Crater erupted.

The eruption caused a landslide which flowed 2km down the mountain and blocked three streams, creating a dam in one of them.

The dam broke last month, sending a lahar down the mountain.

Really what Doc should be doing is stopping access to all those tracks around and anywhere near the mount. Making sure that NO one is in the trampers huts. Clear them all out.

Trampers and climbers are being warned to stay away from Mt Ruapehu's Summit Hazard Zone following warnings the volcano could be on the verge of eruption.

Scientists monitoring the volcano say pressure is building under the volcano's crater lake.

The Department of Conservation (DoC) said people should not enter anywhere that falls inside 2 kilometers of the Crater Lake.

Climbers and trampers should refer to a Summit Hazard Zone map or GPS to determine when they are approaching the zone, DoC said.

"We recommend that guiding companies do not take people into the zone. Any other climbers, trampers and walkers should not enter the zone," said DoC Ruapehu Area Manager Jonathan Maxwell.

All other roads, walking tracks, and activities within the Tongariro National Park are open.

DoC will update the situation when more information is available.

They should close the National Park totally.. not just partially. This is going to be a big blow
