US ‘huddling’ with Israel, other allies as Assad’s forces ‘load chemical weapons into bombs

’Syrian troops reportedly began mixing components over the weekend; ‘remote’ danger of chemical weapons being fired into Israel, CNN contributor notes

Syria’s military is ready to use chemical weapons against its own people and has prepared the necessary components, US TV stations reported on Wednesday evening, citing US officials and intelligence sources.

Regime forces are now awaiting orders from President Bashar Assad to use the weaponry, NBC reported. Concern in the region “is growing by the hour,” CNN said. ”It doesn’t get more serious than this.”

Washington is “huddling” with its allies, including Israel, over how to grapple with the danger, according to CNN. US intelligence, Israeli intelligence and other agencies were “working this problem round the clock,” it said.

A chemical attack on a city like Homs in western Syria, with a population of about a million, could wipe out a third of the city in a few hours, ex-CIA agent Robert Baer told the station.

Baer also noted that with Al-Qaeda reportedly “on the ground” in Syria, there was a “remote” danger of chemical weapons being fired into Israel. There were “all sorts of disastrous scenarios,” he said. “They’re remote, but it’s a possibility.”

CNN said the Pentagon was fully focused on the Syrian chemical weapons threat, and was coordinating with Israel, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Officials were working on “targeting options” to present to the president, to try to stop the Syrians using the weaponry. The problem is that, if the chemicals have indeed been mixed, then firing on them would release the chemical agents, potentially causing catastrophe, CNN reported.

Assad’s military has “load..

Damn it, the threat is very real. Gerry was asking me the other day why I was so sure that Assad would get bombed within 72 hours and based upon the some very credible intell from sources and some lucky analysis, I am afraid to say I may still be right. It does not get more serious than this without still having Internet when the missiles or bombs fly and people start to die.

But U.S. officials said this week that the government had ordered its Chemical Weapons Corps to "be prepared," which Washington interpreted as a directive to begin bringing together the components needed to weaponize Syria's chemical stockpiles.

Sarin is an extraordinarily lethal agent. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's forces killed 5,000 Kurds with a single sarin attack on Halabja in 1988.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israel is closely monitoring Syria’s potential use of chemical weapons.

“Together with the international community, we are closely monitoring developments in Syria regarding its stores of chemical weapons,” said Netanyahu. “I heard President Obama's important remarks on this issue and we are of the same mind, that such weapons must not be used and must not reach terrorist elements.”

Israel has expressed concern that the chemical weapons arsenal maintained in Syria will indeed end up in the wrong hands – specifically, the hands of Hizbullah or other terrorists who aim to annihilate the Jewish State. [link to www.israelnationalnews.com]

According to reports American intelligence organizations had been receiving during recent days, the Syrian regime has been preparing the nerve agent Sarin for use. A few months ago, the Syrian government assured the international community that it had tightened its supervision over it chemical weapons stores and that at any rate it will not make use of them in the civil war. Now it seems that Assad may be considering using the deadly weapon.

Assad knows that the use of chemical weapons will alter everything. For this reason he might not really be considering the use of the gas rather that the move is a signal on Assad's part that he is on the precipice of giving in and would like an offer from the opposition.

Al Safir 36 02'02"N 37 21'03"E

On 27 May 2005 Syria test-fired three Scud missiles, the first such Syrian missile tests since 2001. The missiles included one Scud B, with a range of about 300 kilometers, and a pair of Scud D's, with a range of about 700 kilometers. The missiles were launched from Minakh, north of Aleppo in northern Syria. it appears that the missile launchers would have been driven to this air base from their garrison at Al Safir south of Allepo. One flew about 400 kilometers to southernmost Syria, near the border with Jordan. One of the missiles disintegrated over Turkish territory, showering missile parts over two villages in the Turkish province of Hatay. This missile had been fired southwest toward the Mediterranean.

Open sources report that there are at least three Syrian facilities currently engaged in producing Chemical Weapons, located near Damascus, Hama, and Safira village (in the Aleppo area).
