They have a great sense of smell and tracking instinct that sees them employed as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world. Beagles are intelligent, and are popular as pets because of their size, even temper, and lack of inherited health problems. Alongside the Bloodhound, the Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog. The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and typically neither aggressive nor timid, although this depends on the individual. The Beagle generally seems calmer once mentally matured, exhibiting naughty, puppy-like behaviour up until 2-4 years of age. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, although their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them good watch dogs. [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

Scary thought. I'm greatful for what I have. Our cabin has 4 bedrooms, woodstove, good sized loft upstairs. Our garden is about 20 x 20 feet, lots of great produce there this year. Panrty is full of dry goods (rice, pasta, soups, KD, canned milk)I have 4 cord of dry wood and about 2 cord that's not fully dry. I think I've planned pretty well. |

Climate change will end your delusions of growing food and harvesting game. Not to mention you have got to feed your animals as well, if they do no succumb to the climate changes, pollution, et al. Also, a small population of people will wipe country sides clean of small and large animals in short order. Louis and Clarks' small party wiped out large and small game animals on the north west coast 2 days walk around their camp in part of a one fall and one winter. If it were not for the natives in the area bringing them food, they would have starved to death. You are forgetting the population in this country is 300 million. You really think all those living in large cities are just going to sit in their rooms and starve without moving into the country side? You really think you will somehow be able to 'hide' where you are? In the past, large numbers of people walked from the east to the west across this country in relatively short order. Is there a road to your house? Hard to hide food and shelter with a road leading right to it. But, its good to dream and it sounds like you got it already, that is awesome, enjoy it, cause it aint gonna last forever. |
