5 dead after outbreak of fungal meningitis tied to injections, UPDATE, 140 Texans
A dozen people have been sickened and two have died after an outbreak of fungal meningitis tied to injections given at outpatient surgical centers in Tennessee and North Carolina, health officials said. At least 737 people who received lumbar epidural steroid injections between July 30 and Sept. 20 have been notified of the cluster of rare aspergillus meningitis infections

So far, five people have died in this outbreak. Thirty are ill. Kentucky, right now, is lucky enough not to have any cases in the state. But from what WKYT is learning, the company that made the medications is licensed in all 50 states. There is a possibility we could soon find out about more infections.

This is a serious disease," said Marion Kainer, an infectious disease expert with the state health department. "There is not a lot of experience in treating this, but we are getting the best experts together."

I heard about that-said it was from a company in Massachusetts.

No way that was an accident. Still, we should pray for those affected and their families.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)
It's an outbreak we're seeing in several neighboring states. People are getting sick with fungal meningitis after receiving a very common and popular pain treatment - steroid injections. Those are most commonly used for back pain

So far, five people have died in this outbreak. Thirty are ill. Kentucky, right now, is lucky enough not to have any cases in the state. But from what WKYT is learning, the company that made the medications is licensed in all 50 states. There is a possibility we could soon find out about more infections.

Packaged in Massachusetts and sent to clinics in more than 20 states, the back injection has infected patients in six states, some neighboring Kentucky. The states are - Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, and Florida.

The New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts has recalled more than 17,000 of the vials believed to be contaminated.

Well, there better not be any more people injected with this after this recall! I hope the providers are on their toes about pulling the stuff.

Re: 5 dead after outbreak of fungal meningitis tied to injections, UPDATE, 140 Texans
The potential scope of the meningitis outbreak that has killed at least five people widened dramatically Thursday as health officials warned that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of patients who got steroid back injections in 23 states could be at risk.

So far, 35 people in six states — Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana — have contracted fungal meningitis, and five of them have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All had received steroid shots for back pain, a highly common treatment.

In an alarming indication the outbreak could get a lot bigger, Massachusetts health officials said the pharmacy involved, the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., has recalled three lots consisting of a total of 17,676 single-dose vials of the steroid, preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate.

An unknown number of those vials reached 75 clinics and other facilities in 23 states between July and September
, federal health officials said. Several hundred of the vials, maybe more, have been returned unused, one Massachusetts official said.

But many other vials were used. At one clinic in Evansville, Ind., more than 500 patients got shots from the suspect lots, officials said. At two clinics in Tennessee, more than 900 patients — perhaps many more — did.

How in the hell does a fungus found in soil and fecal matter make its way into a fucking vaccine? Sounds fishy.
