Why is it that only one man is chosen to lead the Nation?
It has to be a politician?
I would think a committee of our top scientists, medical specialists, explorers, engineers, and thinkers alike would make more sense. Leading is in a sense, progression. How can that happen when politicians are more like a roundabout of the same non-committed babble?

Psychology. One person to rally around (like a father or general or boss), and one person to be the lightning rod to take the blame for the nation's problems (to protect the "men behind the curtain" -- the true wielders of power).

That's the American way - in most western nations the president (or queen or whatever) has more of a symbolic and diplomatic role. The real decision makers are the ministers and there's more than one of those.

It's an illusion one man runs a nation.. there are many behind the scene who call the shots for him....though I'm always amazed how many people believe "he" makes all the decisions.

Re: Why is it that only one man is chosen to lead the Nation?
We don't have 1 man leading the Nation. Thats why it takes so long for shit to get done. One man leading the Nation is someone like Hitler or Stalin. We have 2 Governing branches. The President and Congress. Congress is supposed to represent the people. In their the people who we send to congress should be some of the best Americans. Obviously this isn't true as Congress is full of fools.

Remember the President doesn't make a single law. He only signs them into law. The only real power the president has unilaterally is his abilities as commander in chief and his ability to issue executive orders. A President has to be careful with executive orders though because if he issues to many he can start to look tyrannical.

The council you mention is kinda like the President's cabinet. Again this should be the best minds in the Nation but of course its full of corrupt assholes.

Honestly people give the President to much credit. You heard a ton of promises in the debate tonight. The truth is they both will need congress to do the majority of things they mentioned tonight.
Ayatollah Khomeini:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] verses and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

Re: Why is it that only one man is chosen to lead the Nation?
The older I get, the more I think that the best system of governance is a benevolent dictatorship, like Sultan Qaboose in Oman. Things get done for the greater good of the great majority of the citizens.

Obviously, though, once the benevolent dictator (if he truly is one) dies, how can the country be assured the next in line of succession will be benevolent?

Knowing human nature, this is an unsustainable form of governance for more than a generation; maybe two.

It's possible to have a benevolent dictator, as I believe Sultan Qaboose (pronounced like the train car, "cuh-BOOSE") is. But I don't think it's possible to establish a sustainable "benevolent dictatorship".
