What if Obama suddenly announced today that he no longer wishes to run for president? That he is prepared to stay on until January, but that the Democrats will have to find another candidate to fight against Romney. What legally happens? Is such a scenario covered in the Constitution? Or would Biden immediately become Acting President AND the DNC candidate?!!

Obama would still be president until Jan 20.

Democrats have an emergency nomination for a new candidate. The Constitution doesn't specify how parties are to nominate their candidates. The Democrats would probably have to change some bylaws, but it could be done.
