Makes absolutely no sense to compare the prices in Europe with the prices in the US.

In my country we have to pay 1.89 per liter, a quick calculation says that's around 9.50$ per gallon. But most of the money we pay for it goes directly to state, who uses the money for public transport, healthcare and much more.

California gas stations low on fuel, high on prices

(CBS News) Many California drivers are running on empty, and the problem could be spreading to other states. Gas prices have jumped all week -- the fastest rise in many years.

And some gas stations don't have any fuel to sell at all. Low supplies are leading to high frustration.

For many Californians, driving is as natural as breathing and gasoline is the motorists' lifeblood. That's why seeing closed stations is more than frustrating -- it's almost unbelievable.

Some of the state's gas stations have been forced to close their pumps, and the ones that are open, are charging prices that can only be described one way -- an arm and a leg.

Gas prices have been rising in other states as well due to the fuel shortage. One exception: gas prices in Texas, which fell four cents a gallon last week.

Every time someone in EU mentions that I have to ask this... What do you consider a long trip? I have to drive 60 miles round trip just to get groceries. Spaces and towns are a bit farther apart in the USA.
 Quoting: MaryAlananB

I know, it pisses me off when I read that too. Not only are things more spread out here, for the most part we DO NOT have much in the way of public transportation. In the area where I live unless you are going to a few specific towns, there is no train service. Bus service is awful and sparse. My husband's commute is 120 miles round trip. How many of you in EU have a commute like that?
 Quoting: INK3

well apes there is people in europe that live away from groceries and have to do 100 km round trip....but they are not that mental to go everyday, not even once a week...organize yourself, shop local, produce something and stfu

I doesn't even pass my mind to do even 30 km if not a couple of time a month
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25001069

The difference is that a hundred km roundtrip is still only something like 60 miles or so. People in europe tend to forget that their entire countries are only about the size of any given state. Where I live at here in N.C towns are normally 15 to 30 miles apart and cities can be a hundred miles apart. My daily trip to work is around 85 miles round trip, thats each day and thats if I only go to work and straight back home. Factor in a stop at a store and my total can easily top 100 miles or more a day. So when you tell me to shop local you failt to realize how far I live from any stores at all, fuckin smartass.

The gas prices in the US are ridiculously cheap compared to the litre price of approx. 1,75€ Germany, let alone some European countries with even higher prices like the Netherlands or Norway.

I have no clue whatsoever why you should panick due to such laughable prices per gallon in your country, which, by the way, literally controls the world's oil prices by its military might and it's epic financial fraud via a completely manipulated $ value.

An American speaking of economy in 2012 is quite breathtaking, as your country has not much left of such a thing, besides the obvious financial fraud your banks control and ruin the world with, that even tops your vulgarity by lack of manners in calling me a dumbass, Sir.

What's the minimum wage in Germany ? Probably 100 dollars an hour and they can hop on a bullet train and get to anywhere in Europe in 20 minutes and retire @40 & free health care & are allowed to drink as least a quart of beer on their lunch break. Free education 4 months of vacation a year. Meanwhile in California gasoline is so costly many are not going to work=net loss.
 Quoting: Black Diamond 20028740

Uuuhh...I assume your post was kinda ironic because it's so far from the truth. Here are some facts for you:

- We don't have a minimum wage in Germany. There are people that work for like 3 Euros/hour which is beyond ridiculous. An average worker might earn around 10 Euros/hour - before taxes

- It is true we do have so called bullet trains but they serve bigger cities only and in most cases you won't get anywhere far away within 20 mins. Plus a ride on such trains costs a shitload of money.

- Actually our retirement age is at 67 atm. It's very likely that people that are in their 30s right now will have to work until 70 or even longer.

- I don't know of any company that allows drinking alcohol during work (which includes lunch break) anymore

- It's true that basic education is free but if you want to study you'll have to pay a couple of hundred Euros per season depending on where you want to study.

- Most companies allow 30 days of vacation per year which amounts to like 1.5 months
