Copernica User ID: 17525775 United States 10/05/2012 12:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The answer: Yes, we do. Euros really cannot grasp how big the US is and how far apart things are. So for some perspective - Most people in the US travel about the distance from Versailles to Paris to get to work. Many work 2x that far or the distance from Chartes to Paris. In many areas of the country, people have to travel at least an hour to just get to the grocery store. I have a friend in the southwest with a 2 hour drive one way to get to any major retail stores. Unless you live in a large city - there is no public transportation available. Even then, if you live any distance outside of town, and work odd hours - you can't rely on buses that only run during rush hours. The US just couldn't function with high gas prices. $5/gallon is a major tipping point. That's when our economy will just about collapse. It's where it becomes too expensive to get to work. Even at current rates and with a small car - people are paying up to a full day's wages to fill their tank for the week. If the price goes up - then you're looking at working for nearly 2 days just to pay to get to and from the job. THEN, you have stores that have to raise their prices because the companies that supply the product have to raise their prices to cover the cost of gas. So now you have 3 1/2 days pay left to buy the necessities whose prices have just gone up. AND your gas and electric bills have also gone up. Since many people live paycheck to paycheck - gas price increases can be the difference between having a roof over their head or living in their cars. I really believe that the monster gas prices we had a few years ago, where we nearly hit the $5/gallon mark nationwide, was a test to see what the tipping point was. We barely survived the $4.59 - $4.89 range. (Many states halted their gas taxes to help keep the gas from going over $5) If the government could figure a way to get our gas prices back down into the $2.50 range - we could actually see an uptick in the economy. It's not that we're gas greedy - it's just that our entire country depends on it because we are so large. God Bless President TRUMP! GOD BLESS AMERICA!! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22570032 United States 10/05/2012 12:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.youtube.com] My life fades... The vision dims. All that remains are memories... I remember - a time of chaos, ruined dreams - this wasted land. But most of all I remember the Road Warrior. The men we called Max! To understand who he was you have to go back to another time. When the world was powered by the black fuel and the deserts sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now. Swept away... Two mighty warrior tribes went to war. ...And touched off a blaze which engufled them all. Without fuel - they were nothing. They built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputterd and... stopped! Their leaders talked and talked and talked... But nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. Cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting. A firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men. On the roads it was a white-line-nightmare! Only those mobile enough to scavenge. Brutal enough to pillage. Would survive. The gangs took over the highways. Ready to wage war for a tank of juice. And in this maelstrom of decay - ordinary men were battered and smashed. Men like Max. The warrior Max. ... in the roar of an engine he lost everything! That became a shell-of-a-man. A burnt out - desolate man. A man haunted by the demons of his past. ... a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here... in this blighted place, that he learned to live again! martiallaw.co [link to www.youtube.com] |

Imagine millions of hungry armed people going through the DT's, jones'n for their antidepressants and *hillbilly heroin* (pain pills). We won't be able to leave the house without being strapped and we'll be up all night guarding our medicine cabinets and gardens. People that don't like pit bulls and Rottweilers will have backyards full of them. And those dogs will be underfed too. Roaming the streets all day searching for food of any kind and guarding the yard at night. Has ANYBODY here seen Don Johnson's first movie "A Boy and His Dog"? It's one of those post apocalyptic flicks, but it's surprising, well written and filmed, funny and all too possible (mostly). Check it out if you haven't. It's way worth the time. Almost, kinda, the lighter side of doom. And I'm sure it's where the idea for Road Warrior came from. |

You are net importer. Fact. I just found this regarding exporting to Mexico: "Reportedly in recent weeks, local refineries were dropping production levels, exporting supply to Mexico and other countries, and allowing inventory to dwindle in anticipation of switching over to production of winter blend gasoline, then a refinery power outage and a pipeline incident occurred on Monday that sent wholesale markets into a panic about the adequacy of California fuel supplies," said Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Glad I filled the tank when I did weeks ago, I don't drive much but it is a nice thing to have. *Stares at my shelves* also nice to have a full larder. A little known fact, when you buy a gallon of petrol it isn't actually a full gallon, more like 4/5ths of a gallon. Do your own test, buy a 1 gallon gas can, buy 1 gallon of gas, notice it isn't even close to bein full? |

What do you consider a long trip? I have to drive 60 miles round trip just to get groceries. Spaces and towns are a bit farther apart in the USA. Quoting: MaryAlananB I know, it pisses me off when I read that too. Not only are things more spread out here, for the most part we DO NOT have much in the way of public transportation. In the area where I live unless you are going to a few specific towns, there is no train service. Bus service is awful and sparse. My husband's commute is 120 miles round trip. How many of you in EU have a commute like that? well apes there is people in europe that live away from groceries and have to do 100 km round trip....but they are not that mental to go everyday, not even once a week...organize yourself, shop local, produce something and stfu I doesn't even pass my mind to do even 30 km if not a couple of time a month The difference is that a hundred km roundtrip is still only something like 60 miles or so. People in europe tend to forget that their entire countries are only about the size of any given state. Where I live at here in N.C towns are normally 15 to 30 miles apart and cities can be a hundred miles apart. My daily trip to work is around 85 miles round trip, thats each day and thats if I only go to work and straight back home. Factor in a stop at a store and my total can easily top 100 miles or more a day. So when you tell me to shop local you failt to realize how far I live from any stores at all, fuckin smartass. sorry if you bought a house in the middle of nowhere...if you had saved all the time and money spent trips you could surely became independent and not require such trips if not once in a couple of months. Or differently bought a house close to your needs |

As I understand it, the large amount of export is not crude oil, but rather the products of the refineries, i.e., gasoline, fuel oil (especially), diesel fuel, etc. IOW you are a net importer of crude oil, but refine it and just in 2011 have exported more petroleum products than you consumed.
