The news release Monday says 32-year-old Edward Archbold became ill soon after winning and collapsed in front of the Ben Siegel Reptile Store where the contest was held. The store is in Deerfield Beach about 40 miles north of Miami. Archbold was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say several contestants ate insects but no one else became ill.

Insects have been a traditional part of the human diet in many places for thousands of years. In Thailand, large water bugs are a delicacy.

If traditionally edible insects are raised in a controlled environment, without pesticides or other contamination, there is no reason that they should not be edible.

Cockroaches do, however, eat anything and everything, so that if they are not strictly raised in clean surroundings, on clean food, they could be vectors for anything.

Besides, no one knows what else may have impacted the man's heath, such as what else he may have recently ingested.

I just puked.. WTF! like okay IF you are surviving in the woods thats one thing.. but to eat them for just hell of it.. I cant even look at those things w.o getting sick..

I'm gonna bet the autopsy exonerates the roach-eating, and finds he died of something else.

You can stamp on Cockroaches and they don't die, they can survive on skimpy resources for lengthy amounts of time and also can survive high doses of radiation.

They are amongst the hardiest insects on the planet.

On a side note, this world needs a little shake-up because there really is no need for cruelty you know. In fact, this planet would survive and do quite well if cruelty were to cease.

Cruelty, by the way, involves stupid, ridiculous eating contests such as this one.

I live in Florida, and I know why! Florida has become an armpit, thanks to all the nasty, lowlife trash that has moved down here. I'm especially referring to those who are from the North East ghettos, and those who lived in South FL after immigrating from elsewhere.
