here is what i pictured from this event. firstly think about an hour glass or a worlpool where the hole at the top starts out small, and then grow and grows until it is bigger or the same size as the area it is passing through at the bottom. well once pressure is equalized between the surface and the cavity it is trying to fill then all hell will break loose so to speak. think of a rubber boot stuck in deep mud, there are only two methods to get the boot out, the easiest is to creat and a pocket to release the suction created by not having any air, the other is my a lot of force.
