Are Earthquakes even common there? Twitter is blowing up over this, but nothing on Google news, CNN, etc.

If this isn't common or occasional, then why the media blackout?

Sure, crap like the Kardashians trump all mews, but you would figure this would be the top, real news story after the Kardashians at least.

The significance of a quake is not by magnitude.

Strongly felt in an uncommon location creates buzz.

And this thread is on fire.

Would you say this is a "significant quake" event though it was not 7.0 or 8.0?

There were no reports of serious damage or injury, but the quake was felt on the SOuth Shore, across the island of Montreal and Laval and as far west as Ottawa.

Re: MONTREAL: DID YOU JUST FEEL THAT EARTHQUAKE???
I live in Boucherville and man did I feel it. I felt this rumbling noise getting louder and louder as if a high speed train was just speeding below my house. The shaking lasted a good 15 to 20 seconds at one point I was expecting something big was about to hit my house. Pretty weird feeling, never felt this before.

Re: MONTREAL: DID YOU JUST FEEL THAT EARTHQUAKE???
The Saint Lawrence rift system is a seismically active zone paralleling the Saint Lawrence River.

The rift system trends northeast and southwest and forms a half-graben that links the Ottawa-Bonnechere and the Saguenay grabens.

The rift system extends more than 1000 km along the
Saint Lawrence valley from the Ottawa - Montreal area.

Within the system, fault reactivation is believed to occur along late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic normal faults related to the opening of the Iapetus Ocean.

First timer for earth quakes too. Never felt one in my 30 years thus far.

It started as a rumble and I'm in Laval. Then everything was shaking and I kinda started to freak out. Then it left liek some strange underground creature slithering away.

I've heard reports of it hitting harder in Longueuil. hiding

Re: MONTREAL: DID YOU JUST FEEL THAT EARTHQUAKE???
with this quake , this is going to be my fourth quake in my life.

the first 3 where all about same , no sound , small short wave then slower bigger wave and stop.

this has a very erratic wave like this:

- 2-3 very fast hard boom on the surface not coming from below follow by erratic wave with rail train metal sound like

- pause

- 7-12 very fast hard boom with rail metal sound and a boom like 2 train just hit them self

- the end

if i had to gave a description of what i just fell i would say it was a big accident , something has just felt on us.

from my knowledge that was not felled like a usual quake caused my seismic motion but surely it was.

Many strange shaking and boom reported first as explosion or big accident by people around the world , so i really do not think Montreal is special in that case.

We do not know everything about earthquake event the best specialist so keep cool , those are just another kind of quake we do not yet fully recognize.

Near Atwater and St Catherines heard a loug bang.. then the building shook like mad! I've never experienced an earthquake like that.. it felt much stronger than the USGS says.

I notice some people here mentioned headaches and such for a few days prior.. I experienced this as well, I'd like to think it's not connected.
