Was anyone else forced to learn IPA?
International Phonetic Alphabet

I distinctively remember being forced to learn this in 2nd grade. I think it was some experimental teaching conducted on only certain students.. I remember I thought it was stupid..

I learned it in one of my communication classes in college. It is goo so that you can read foreign languages and pronounce correctly - was one benefit.

plus it was fun.

Re: Was anyone else forced to learn IPA?
I wonder what it was doing in my public school.. I continued to write my e upside-down for years after I left the program.

I vaguely remember the teachers complaining about the program screwing up the students.

I had a tutor try to teach it to me.
I clearly thought she was nuts and ignored the lessons.

Luckily, I was one of the few that was able to switch back to normal without lasting problems.. many were not so lucky.

Late 69-70 for me.
I think it is an exceptional way to learn sounds and letters.

Just wondering, what problems did you have because of the phonics style teaching?

I also participated in the IPA program in the 70s, 1st grade, NYS. It included a 44 letter alphabet, where boi=boy.

I can still recite most of the alphabet, and was always at the top of the class in reading, writing, spelling. 1dunno1

My mother actually had to sign a permission slip in order for me to attend, it was not mandatory, as there was only one first grade class to participate, and only taught for the the one year 72-73.

personally, I fell behind the class in reading, writing and spelling, but was able to adjust quickly after changing schools. Others were not so lucky. I recall the teachers having a fit about it(back when they were still allowed to voice their opinions about such things).

I found it useless and irresponsible to experiment on basic reading and writing skills. Perhaps it is useful to learn after these basic skills are already learned. An 8th grader might find it useful to assist learning another language.

It only lasted one year because it failed horribly. Strangely enough, by the time 4th grade came around, I was on top of my class in spelling as well.

I was in a class that was like yours. Not everyone in school was included. Only our class.
I too was at the top of my class in reading, writing and spelling. My math skills must have been damaged by the IPA. Ha

Bilingual ??? Not fluently, but can speak enough Spanish and Italian to get from one place to the other independently. Actually, the Spanish alphabet is very similar phonetically to the IPA alphabet.

Is that what it was? I was sitting here trying to think of it and decided to look it up... I live here in the Buffalo suburbs, and I think it was the same year the teachers went on strike..
