They should have left a NOTE explaining WHY they locked your gas. But you can't just go smashing off utility locks. That was a DUMB thing to do without finding out first why they locked things. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1405546 United States 11/06/2012 01:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Are you seriously suggesting that people should lock their gas supplies on? Quoting: CannonousCrash What if the key gets miss placed and there is a gas leak. Theres no way to shut off the gas. Please dont give bad advice. Please dont be an idiot. The problem is utilities ending a contract that was paid for. Of course they have small print signed and sealed. But beyond that, EVERY person has the inalienable right to privacy and protection of property. Should they want to lock their grounds from anyone, requiring they meet with the home owner first is obviously being stepped on. But here goes another freedom you are told you have, but really dont. PLUS, no one would need to lock the shut off IF the company didnt lock it OFF either!!!! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27132632 Yup, they've also restricted access to some of the barrier islands in NJ, due to the danger of gas leaks. Look at some pictures of Mantoloking, and you'll see why. SilentlyKnowing User ID: 23725672 United States 11/06/2012 02:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They are shutting off the gas to houses in areas when the electricity supply is about to be restored to prevent the possibility of spontaneous fires in houses with water damaged power systems. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27130487 As soon as power is restored for a few house the gas supply will be unlocked. New Jersey Natural Gas said it would shut off gas to the hurricane-damaged barrier islands south of Point Pleasant Beach to Seaside Park, as well as Long Beach Island, affecting 28,000 customers. Electricity will be restored to the area once the gas is shut down, the company said. [link to www.nbcnewyork.com] There is something REALLY 'FISHY'..... like they say...."Something is ROTTEN in Denmark!" Even if they were doing this proceedure of locking your meter....you would THINK that they could at least put a note on your door or NOTIFY the neighborhood in a "town meeting" type format. It just really STEAMS ME UP that the utility companies are able to BULLY AMERICANS this way... just because they CAN! In my town in Montana, things are SO BAD...that clerks at the local electric company are BEHIND BULLET-PROOF GLASS and you have to talk to them with telephones on your side of the glass...THIS IS A SMALL TOWN I AM TALKING ABOUT!! It isn't like L.A. or something..... Now...what's up with THAT? Tell me this is a Democracy...I'll laugh right in your face!! Hang in there, OP...I think you are a real hero and I would "knight" you for being resiliant in the face of this disaster. Be Safe! Cheers! SK (Have one of these one me!) |

I don't understand the locking of meter either. It can be done from one main source.....This doesn't make sense. :kitten on fence: |

It can be done from one main source.....This doesn't make sense. Quoting: Blue Skies I might understand it if they knocked on his door -- he was not home -- and as a precaution they shut it down. But they should leave a note on the door -- as others have said. And shutting them ALL down... seems like a lot of re-work. Now they have to go back to each house and do it all over again. Would have been better to check those houses that they could when they were there the first time. Better for the utility-- better for the customer. Have a nice day = GFY. GFY = Go Fuck Yourself. If this offends you then have a nice day. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27142624 Mexico 11/06/2012 02:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So from this thread it seems some of the dangers are: air pockets in the grid, water mixed in with the gas, a pressure test,,,, And I guess the most obvious: with the electricity out some appliances/fixtures were left on and combined with extinguished pilot lights, a sudden power on of electricity sparks the latent gas in the air. Anything else? |
McTimmins User ID: 26410914 Canada 11/06/2012 02:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dumbshit. You don't own the meter so you just damaged someone elses property. Have fun in court. On top of that you put yourself and your neighbors in danger and will probably be sued for that. You forgot to mention that you got a 24 or 48 hour notice of gas shut off for servicing. Ya know, that notice in your mailbox or more than likely stuck to your door. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 5378631 Canada 11/06/2012 03:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are tons of alternatives to gas... A rocket stove, "beer can" alcohol stove, charcoal stove found for cheap at a store... But propane is best if you have access to it, since it's clean and cheap. For the alcohol stove, use ethanol... allows to be used inside without air poisoning yourself too much. |

Frater (OP) User ID: 28363777 United States 11/24/2012 02:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So 2 gas company guys come knocking at the door "Hey! Were here to turn your gas back on :)" So I'm thinking like "Oh shit". So I tell them "Umm it's already on." They go out and look at the meter and the busted up pieces of lock and one starts laughing "Did you do this?" "Yaaa, it was me" (I'm not a good liar) and then I explained what had happened. The first guy says "Ah, don't worry about it, I'd have done the same thing!" and the second guy says "Saves me the trouble of removing that thing." It turns out I know one guys dad, hes an aircraft mechanic like me LOL and we talked about that for a bit while they just double checked my stove and heating equipment in the basement. Both of them shook my hand and left joking with each other. No gas police for me :) So while everyone else around me was freezing, I had hot water via my old school gas hot water heater (doesn't use any electric) and a stove to cook hot food on and help heat the place up. My neighbor and her daughter were coming over for hot food and showers, so I was pleased to be of some help too. I got a gasoline generator going too and that helped dramatically (lights tv and internet, oil filled space heaters etc..) I'd say i did the right thing though I did worry about it just a bit.
