mathetes User ID: 18119575 United States 11/11/2012 08:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Holy crap, Machinist in Nevada starting pay $12hr with benefits Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27120400 Just saw the story on 60 mins about the jobs situation in the USA 3 million job openings, WOW!...the problem is the companies say that today's average applicant does not have the technical skills needed for the job(s) 2 guys went thru 16 weeks of school and were offered machinist jobs at $12hr I thought a job of this technical skill would at least start at $16 an hour your thoughts? Sad, but when unemployment is high, thats what you get As a kid in 1983 I was making 16 bucks an hour working for UPS, after I quit in 86 to start my own biz I never worked a job that pays by the hour again But the point of your post is valid, there are jobs if you have the skills For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. |

They've forced all kinds of shops to close and are in the process of turning the profesion into a Burger King job. |
Beachbums User ID: 27554230 Ecuador 11/11/2012 08:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's pretty poor for a machinist. It should be closer to 20, or higher for a journeyman. Anonymous Coward User ID: 25607611 United States 11/11/2012 08:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 12 bucks an hour isn't shit for a manual machinist. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4336852 They must be looking for button pushers. The average age of the machinists at my place is 59. We are desperately looking for machine operators. Screw machines, lathe operators and set up people. All of them 50 & 60 year old manual machines. Kids aren't interested in learning the old ways. The last 10 "machinists" we interviewed thought all they had to do was place a part and push the 2 yellow buttons at the same time. One guy that looked promising couldn't read vernier calipers, almost could read a dial caliper and couldn't figure out how to change the digital from mm to inches. He did OK after we showed him. Still wasn't good enough though. As these guys retire, we as a company will be screwed unless they start spending some money on modern CNC machines. If fact we have 3 guys that are retired that still work 2 ~ 3 days a week. But, there's still China. (Where about 3/4 of our product comes from now. Lots a'crap. I'm in QC so I see all of it!) I don't think we pay much more than that and we're in rural SC. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12124172 Actually it is all an entry level machinist is worth. How long before a good one makes decent money is the question. They advertise a position for low pay, and demand high qualifications. Sometimes the qualifications are impossible, such as having 2 years experience working with Microsoft 8. Then when no-one who is qualified applies, the company applies to bring in foreign workers. They drop the impossible qualification, and hire foreigners who will do the job on the cheap. At least this ad is offering $12 an hour. The fake ads in my area usually only offer $8. (But they require the person be bilingual, have several years of supervising, and have several years of specialized training. All for only minimum wage. ) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 25607611 United States 11/11/2012 09:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | To judge their caliber all you have to ask is if they can work in tenths. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27041005 194: I was wondering about that too with Obamacare kicking in soon. We are under 30 people so maybe it won't affect us. Yeah, wishful thinking. 1005: It would be nice if we only dealt in tenths. The US prints are in decimal AND fractions. The Chinese crap comes in metric. Takes me longer to convert for inspection logs than the actual inspections do. Thank goodness for Excel. I've got the logs set up to auto-convert the entries for the "official" records. Not so bad. I almost wish we would just convert everything to metric. So much easier. I said almost. Tenths would be OK too. |
