hatch battener User ID: 67650 United States 01/29/2006 03:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The OP is correct, the Chandler wobble has stopped. And this event which has developed in the past couple months, could have dire consequences for the history of mankind. As the Earth spins about it's axis, it has a slight wobble, like a spinning top. This is the Chandler wobble. The Chandler wobble when plotted on a graph, normally makes a regular circular pattern. But it hasn't been doing that since early December of last year. This dramatic change in the direction of the Chandler wobble has been called the biggest anomaly in the history of recording the Chandler wobble, which goes back over 100 years. Here's the plot for the past 3 years which shows the current shift. [link to hpiers.obspm.fr] The course of the Earths spin axis is off!! When will it be correcting itself? Will it correct itself? We will have to wait and see in the months to come. But if it doesn't, the biggest calamity in human history will be upon us. |

As far as I can see it's showing continual movement and even has a prediction of the likely changes in thje future. Anyway, if the wobble stopped for a short time, how would this be a cause of a catastrophe? The wobble is a TINY change in the position of the pole, and is quite slow anyway. It's so small that you need very expensive and very sensitive instruments to even know it's happening. If it does stop it'll be interesting in relation to the cause of the wobble, but there's not going to be "doom and disaster". You people need to learn some science instead of running about in a panic every time there's a change you don't understand... |

This dramatic change in the direction of the Chandler wobble has been called the biggest anomaly in the history of recording the Chandler wobble," I don't take anyone's word for anything so let me play devil's advocate here for a minute and try to understand this. First, it takes about 433 days to complete one wobble which amounts to about 20 feet at the north pole. How can someone tell it has stopped in 2 months? Second, who said there was a 'dramatic change' and the 'biggest anomaly'? The link [link to hpiers.obspm.fr] to your graph, who draws these graphs? Also, I would point out the green line is a prediction. Lastly, why should I believe Carpenter? An ordained minister who sees the weeping face of God on the ocean floor? Not attacking anyone, Just wondering.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 54147 United States 01/29/2006 05:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | During a national radio broadcast on 28 January 2006, Lloyd Stewart Carpenter reported that the Chandler wobble has stopped (i.e., its amplitude has reduced to zero) -- which could be a harbinger of a catastrophic pole shift. This is however completely unfounded speculation as the actual recorded data shows no indication that the wobble has stopped, or shows any signs of stopping. If it did stop for any length of time this would be of great interest in gaining a better understanding the causes, but would not cause any catastrophic changes in the overall rotation axis of the planet. that was from wikipedia, they changed thier story or rather added to it saying everything is fine now, move along nothing to see here all is normal this happens all the time. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 51507 United States 01/29/2006 05:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | any moron who can read a graph can see that the wobble is approaching zero. what are the models for predicting any effects at zero? how stuff works: "There are theories about the cause and the effect of the wobble. Some think tides and the liquid interior of the earth could play a part. As others have reported recently, some clues have been discovered. Some of the more recent conjectures include the constant winds over the oceans pushing varying amounts of water on the earth at one time or even the effects of a major earthquake. This article talks about one of the most recent theories, which attributes most of the wobble to pressure changes in the ocean." [link to science.howstuffworks.com] |
