Anonymous Coward User ID: 23427044 United States 11/18/2012 07:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is the bottom line that I think Phenommmm (sp?) was trying to make: This union - in the Hostess debate - DECLINED an 8% pay cut and 17% health insurance raise. Now, could some people not have survived this? I'm sure. I probably couldn't have been able to pay my bills and keep my house with that pay cut and would have lost my health insurance. BUT - THEY WERE JOBS! If they didn't want to do it - let someone ELSE come in and take them. 18000 OTHER people are willing to work for that money. But no, All these people who could have been making a decent wage are now a tax burden to the rest of us. So, while I outlined my own struggles with unemployment and poverty, I surely do resent those folks who deliberately and selfishly caused the collapse of Hostess. |

[link to www.thefreelibrary.com] [link to dbacon.igc.org] "The battle at Diamond Walnut has ground on for over 40 months, not because its workers made excessive demands, nor because their employer faced desperate economic conditions. This has been a strike against the modern day industrial death sentence itself - against permanent replacement, or in not so polite, but truer, language, strikebreaking. The strike at Diamond Walnut, the battles at Caterpillar, Bridgestone and Staley in Illinois, and other strikes like them which have torn communities apart in recent years across the country, could all have been resolved quickly but for one thing. The employers in every case hired strikebreakers. This simple act converted traditional job actions over resolvable issues of wages and working conditions into desperate struggles for survival for the workers and unions involved. In a rightward drifting America, losing a strike no longer means accepting a lower wage or poorer benefits. It means losing your job." |
