This could be epic...

Heavy rainfall can trigger earthquakes in what one scientist calls "disaster triggering disaster."

Wonder how N. California will like 14 inch rainfall totals through 8-days? Bay Area & Sacramento, Valley plenty too [link to twitter.com]

I wonder if that's enough to flood out the central valley south of Sacramento.

If the levees break, Sacramento and the surrounding areas (especially Natomas - for those who don't know it's a location in Sac where they are all below sea level) will be seriously hurting. They've been trying to shore up the levees but there are so many it takes time, and money.

Ugh... I hope the levees stay intact. The house is so close to one my husband could probably land a ball in the water with an 8 or 9 iron.

I do too! The collapse or failure of the levee system is the worst case scenario. I will bet for sure that this are will experience some sort of flooding, due to the increased level of local streams and rivers.

I live in the central valley, and all the Sacramento weather reporters are down playing this storm, likes it's really no big deal. So what gives?
 Quoting: In-Situ

Reminds me of the mid 90s. I lived in San Francisco, a friend who worked on an oil tanker had seen the radar "The shit is going to hit the fan". Not a peep on the news or in the paper.

House shook all night from the wind, in the morning the big gusts hit, trees bent flat to the ground. Then the power went out. It was not long after thanksgiving, had left over pie that had to be finished off quickly.

Power was out for two days. The winds stripped the bark off the trees in GG park and partly destroyed a 100 year old glass house. Winds hit over 100mph in some higher areas.

Walked the park with no cars and hardly any people. The roads and paths where all blocked by fallen trees. They lost a few thousand trees in the park. Falling trees took out the power feed to the much of the Richmond which happened to run along the park.

Downtown was a disaster, scaffolding ripped away from buildings. News paper boxes scattered everywhere.

Wonder if it will be another storm like that?

Re: Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow!!!
The reprieve from the stormy weather along the West Coast will come to an abrupt end tomorrow, leading to yet another stretch of rainy conditions.

It has been a rather wet and stormy month of November in many places from San Francisco to Seattle. Most locations are at or above their normal precipitation for the month and more rain is on the way.

High pressure in control of the weather over the past several days has led to a return of dry, sunnier weather, but a potent storm system lurks off the coast.

As this storms pushes eastward, residents from Los Angeles to Portland will need the umbrella on Wednesday. After a brief break on Wednesday night, a soaker of a day is in store for Thursday, especially along the coast.

The persistent flow of storms is expected to continue into the weekend with the heaviest precipitation focused in northern California.

With the flow off the Pacific and a lack of cold air to the north, snow levels will remain above pass level. While snowfall will be lacking in many places, the rainfall will not. Flooding can occur in places, especially the Sacramento Valley.

Locations in California can receive over 5 inches of rain through the weekend with local amounts up to 9 inches!

As with most strong western storms, wind will be an issue along the immediate coast. Wind gusts can peak over 50 mph by Wednesday night and Thursday.

Looking ahead, the weather pattern should turn a little less stormy by the beginning of next week although it can still shower at times.
