NAM 00z bombed out New England coastal low to 950 mb in Labrador Sea. Long-lived Gulf of Alaska low spins away. [link to twitter.com]

Is this system going to bring the Fukushima debris field closer to the coast?

most of the cities on the west coast aren't right up near the ocean like they are in manhatten.

yeah. there's a few districts right there on the water, but we have lots of cliffs that lead down to the ocean.

mudslides in northern california would be the biggest concern near the coast.

ok, another danger i think is the rapid flooding in rivers and streams that could make a whater wall and take everything in front of it...

The coast tends to be very rocky and steep in most places. Normal storm wave activity here is stronger than an east coast hurricane. If a Sandy sized storm surge came in it might flood a few blocks on the coast of San Francisco and some areas of downtown built on fill. But it would effect many many fewer homes than Sandy did.

The ark storm effect is the real disaster storm wise. Coastal cities can drain and would have only transient effects. The central valley on the otherhand has very poor access to drainage, it would make Katrina look like nothing. You'd need the full airlift capability of the military just to get food in and perform rescues.

Re: Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow!!!
ARKstorm fears Northern California Residents as Atmospheric River sets up

(TheWeatherSpace.com) - The ARKstorm was what would be predicted as a major rainfall event that would consist of a lot of snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, followed by a tropical air mass that melts all the snow.

Such a scenario might actually be coming, with the first round hitting on Wednesday, then Thursday into Friday, another on Saturday, and then lasting through Sunday as well. A full five days worth of heavy rainfall in Northern and Central California.

This will bring heavy mountain snow to the higher elevations, but below 8,000 feet it should be all rain. This will melt a lot of the snow that is already up there and cause major flooding in the Central Valley zones.

14 inches of rain for Sacramento is in the official TheWeatherSpace.com Forecast grid with 20 inches for the foothill zones east of there.

San Francisco will get over eight inches of rainfall.

TheWeatherSpace.com will have continued coverage of this event for all of California.

If you are in Southern California, the Southern California Weather Authority Facebook would be your one stop place to hop for weather and the area will receive very mild effects compared to the areas north of there.

Nice! Thanks for the tip!

Oh how I love a little flooding doom in my area (south of San Francisco). Always exciting to drive around watching the creeks threaten to overtop their banks. The little ones pour into 4-5 big ones that reach raging proportions as they approach the bay.

Our little flat-roofer will be pouring water off in all directions. Maybe I'll buy a couple of extra rain barrels to store up for the dry season next year.

And oh yeah, sweep the leaves out of the gutters.

Here's a boringly-mainstream version of the news ..
