Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1321115 If the levees break, Sacramento and the surrounding areas (especially Natomas - for those who don't know it's a location in Sac where they are all below sea level) will be seriously hurting. They've been trying to shore up the levees but there are so many it takes time, and money. Ugh... I hope the levees stay intact...... I'm sure commuting will be a delight... I do too! The collapse or failure of the levee system is the worst case scenario. I will bet for sure that this are will experience some sort of flooding, due to the increased level of local streams and rivers. Oh, and commuting? Uggg..accidents, flooding...erk. I-80. 99 and 50 are sure to be messes. Hi neighbor. Fortunately they put rock in recently to help with erosion in our area. I get to deal with the 4 and 680. 4 is bad enuf dry. Stay safe!! You too Juliebean! The newscasters are finally saying that this could be some storm, but they're not saying much else. They're not warning people or anything, so I dunno. |

The ark storm effect is the real disaster storm wise. Coastal cities can drain and would have only transient effects. The central valley on the otherhand has very poor access to drainage, it would make Katrina look like nothing. You'd need the full airlift capability of the military just to get food in and perform rescues. Fred, you are dead-on correct. The central valley is surrounded by mountains (Sierras) to the east and the west (Altamont and surrounding). It creates a bowl effect. Also, as I stated previously, our levees are in horrible shape (Juliebean is correct - they have shored some of the levees up but not all of them). The hub of our water system lies in northern and central California. Should the levees fail, especially in the Delta, Southern California could find their water supply disrupted and even stopped if the damage is bad enough. I just hope that none of this happens. |
