Pictures of people swimming and fishing in the blood red water as if everything is normal and fine. Humans are the dumbest species on the planet and in complete denial of what is going on "As Above, So Below." Biko |

I haven't been there for years. I went on a road trip with some friends in 99/00. We drove up to Cairns from the blue mtns, and then across to Magnetic Island to see the new year in. On the way back we spent the night in Byron Bay. It was magical. |

ET*Dude User ID: 25793339 Australia 11/27/2012 12:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bondi clear but algal blooms linger A bloom was first spotted at Bondi at 6.30am (AEDT) on Tuesday, with subsequent outbreaks popping up at Clovelly Beach and Gordons Bay later in the day. On the NSW central coast, blooms were spotted off Wamberal, Copacabana, Terrigal, Avoca and North Avoca beaches at around 9.30am but dispersed shortly after, a Gosford City Council spokesperson said. No beaches were closed on the central coast. While Gordons Bay and Clovelly, which resembled tomato juice on Tuesday afternoon, remain closed, Bondi Beach has reopened. "With the red algae leaving and mostly harmless, Bondi is putting the flags back up again. Enjoy!" Beachwatch wrote on Twitter. The bloom has been identified as Noctiluca scintillans, is caused by an upwelling of colder nutrient-rich water. Also called "red tide" or "fire in the sea", the algae is non-toxic but contains high ammonia levels that can cause minor skin irritation if you swim in it, a NSW Office of Water spokesman told AAP. Anonymous Coward User ID: 17472287 New Zealand 11/27/2012 01:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 1972: A red tide was caused in New England by a toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium (Gonyaulax) tamarense. The red tides caused by the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax are serious because this organism produces saxitonin & gonyautoxins which accumulate in shellfish and if ingested may lead to paralytic shellfish poisoning and can lead to death[19] 2005: The Canadian red tide was discovered to have come further south than it has in years prior by the ship (R/V) Oceanus,[20] closing shellfish beds in Maine and Massachusetts and alerting authorities as far south as Montauk (Long Island, NY) to check their beds.[21] Experts who discovered the reproductive cysts in the seabed warn of a possible spread to Long Island in the future, halting the area's fishing and shellfish industry and threatening the tourist trade, which constitutes a significant portion of the island's economy. No deaths of humans have been attributed to Florida red tide, but people may experience respiratory irritation (coughing, sneezing, and tearing) when the red tide organism (Karenia brevis) is present along a coast and winds blow its toxic aerosol onshore. Swimming is usually safe, but skin irritation and burning is possible in areas of high concentration of red tide.[22] 2011: Gulf of Mexico |
