You might be poor if...

You rent your furniture.

You play the lottery.

You buy cheap Chinese crap from Wal-Mart.

You spend more on bailing wire and duct tape than it would cost to replace your leaky tail pipe.

Your TV is bigger than your dinning room table.

And for the rich too stupid to understand.

What this means is people do not value money. Because money has no motherfucking value. This isnt something to poke fun at them. it is the reason why all the money you have will become useless.

youll thank them later. All those acorns youre hoarding? Arent real acorns anyway.

After "check day" the bodegas in the hoods look like casinos with all the scratch off gamblers....coincidence? I think not....its kinda funny too....instead of buying a bunch of tickets and going home they buy and scratch them one at a time in the bodega...the floor is littered with tickets and the regulars suck on 40ozer while playing....ghettoan culture....

At least our poor buy something inside the US economy with the money we give them.

Most of them want something for nothing and are lazy. They go to school and piss away their opportunities and graduate (if they go that far) at the bottom of their class. They have kids early and cannot afford them. They get no training and end up working at dead-end minimum wage jobs. Then, rather than feeding their kids, they are hoping for that one big score. But, you cannot make the stupid smart by outlawing the lottery. Hey, their money helps to fund my kids GA Tech engineering degrees so they can spend as much as they want and it's OK by me.

True, I have a 'friend'(i was one to her but not the other way around) who has got the give me/entitlement mentality now and I can't stand to be around her. She use to be a hard worker then got 'fibromyalgia' which then got her on disability. Now she is lazy and thinks people should feel sorry for her and give her what she wants. It really becomes a sickness. She has made herself mentally ill with her sick thinking. It really is a shame.

Last year I was out of work and having a hard time finding a job.

I offered to cut my nieghbors 15foot hedge that lines his entire yard, it took me almost a week to finish it and clean up the mess. He paid me 300$, I went to dinner that night and put 10$ down on keno and won 5000$.

It was the answer to everything at the time and I would have been screwed financially now had I not won.

So just because you haven't won doesn't mean that people are not winning, you just have bad luck the 10$ risk was worth it at the time.

Also since we are making generalizations about people here in this thread, i've found that most rich people I've met are just tightwads and typically extremely narassitic, lacking any empathy for their fellow man. Rich financially and completly devoid of any moral value.

But each to his own, if you like collecting a bunch of green paper that has no real value in the end, then more power to you.

Just remember you can't take it with you when you go, and your kids will end up hating each other fighting over what's left.

If you earn the money yourself who cares what the person is like. They can be as selfish or giving as they want. It is the people who 'steal' from others because they are lazy and don't want to work I have a problem with. I have no problem helping out people who are trying to find work or who are working poor and need a break.

I bet the odds of winning $5000 from Keno were not 175000000 to one. I'm glad that green paper you won helped you out.

States across the nation rely on poor suckers to fund their spending. No, we’re not talking about taxpayers – we’re talking about lottery ticket purchasers. According to new studies, households earning $13,000 per year spend almost $1,170 per year on lottery tickets – 9 percent of total income. As it turns out, many people living in poverty make poor financial decisions.

They got their "source" originally from a twitter feed, which then sourced a PBS transcript, which a brief mention of a 2008 article in the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, which is misrepresented by the PBS commentator Jeffrey Brown.

The actual article is

Myopic Risk seeking: the impact of narrow decision bracketing on lottery play.

[link to sds.hss.cmu.edu]

This study was not trying to find out what percent of the poor bought lottery tickets, and there is not any info about households less than 13,000 buying 9% of their income in tickets , but they do mention several papers on lottery statistics offhand, it's possible one of these papers has the statistic, not so far I've been unable to find it.

The closest is this line
"Approximately 50% of households with an income less than $25,000
play the lottery, and among the households that play, the annual per capital expenditure is upwards of $550 (Clotfelter et al. 1999)"

but it's not clear if the $550 is the average for all Household or, only those of 25,000 and lower. Still it's not 9%, especially if you remember that 50% of the poor do not play at all.

One paper on lottery statistics says that the annual amount spent on lottery tickets broken down by income brackets doesn't vary much, from $125-$145. Of course this means lower income brackets use a higher percentage of their income, but that's a given for anything the poor purchase.

I also found several blog posts pointing to the 2008 journal article in Risk and Uncertainty, saying it says the same thing that the PBS douchebag did when it in fact does not, so these "journalists" are not checking source, including the schmuck from PBS

They are investing a certain sum of money in a high risk, but high payoff investment portfolio.

I guess what they mean is when poor people do this, they are wasting their money on get-rich-quick schemes, but when millionaire venture capitalists do it, they are Industrial Giants.

When state budgets are coming up short, they can manipulate the PB numbers. Two times this year the PB has reach well over 400mil.

Look at the past years, nothing compares.

But try to find out how much money PB tickets sales generated yesterday alone, when only a very small percentage went into the jackpot. So the state divvy up the amount taken in, yet cry because they claim no money.

They are allow to lie and manipulate to make the numbers work in their favor and it is legal. Yet they keep everything hush, hush.

Really makes one wonder who is taking from the kitty?

yeah...things happen when they need to. My parents won the Kansas State Lottery several years back. It was only 60K and they ended up with 48K after taxes but it was enough at the time for them to pay off all debt and allow my dad to take the early retirement deal American Airlines was offering. Shortly after that (a couple of months) the house next door to mine was put up for sale. It was basically my parents dream house. They bought it and moved in. A year later my dad died from some inexplicable sudden illness at only 65.

Lottery curse? IDK.

Scratch off tickets especially, I see it all the time. A few years ago this lady came up to me on the street while I was walking home from work and started crying about needing a dollar for the bus. I, like an idiot, believed her.

I had some running around to do and lo and behold..there she was scratching off lottery tickets. I told her if it's a winner she owes me a buck. She just glared at me like she wanted to kill me.

You'd probably do the same if you knew you could support your family better with the assistance you received than with a minimum paying job.

I actually know of someone who chose that route for exactly those reasons! It was only temporarily though until she re-married.

Maybe it's time to re-think minimum wages. But then again, the rich people wouldn't be so rich anymore if they had to put some of their profits back into the people responsible for making them rich in the first place.
