Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28535456 what makes you say that the magnetic material isn't iron, OP? I also remember doing this as a kid. Would spend part of my day trying to fill a plastic bag. I'd have to move the magnet through the dirt and after about a minute, I'd have a bit stuck to my magnet. If I take a magnet a touch it to the soil around here, every little bit of dirt sticks. If I take a broom and sweep some dirt on the street into a pile, 100% of that dirt is also magnetic. |

Grab a magnet and lightly touch some dry soil outside. In California, 100% of the soil I've tested is magnetic. This is not iron and it's not normal for dirt to stick to a magnet (I'm not speaking from ignorance). Please test your dirt and post your findings here. If you could, include a general location.
