In Washington, I know the basic things. Which berries to pick, which mushrooms, how to catch trout, where there's good hiding places and fresh water. I would be willing to guess that everyone knows their own state the best, so it may be the safest place to be.

Re: What is the Worst State(s) to be in When TSHTF?
What state or states do folks deem the worst to be in and why...?
 Quoting: Uke

That entirely depends on what kind of SHTF doom it is.

There is no ONE single answer.
 Quoting: Burt Gummer

My thoughts exactly

Time of year, too. Something that knocks out the power grid is going to be very hard on Northern states in the winter, but the summer would be a really bad time to be in a desert.

There are also going to be parts of less-safe states that are safer than parts of "safe" states. There are more rural areas of California that are GREAT for survival, with a reasonably temperate climate year round, meaning little temperature-related survival stress and a long growing season. I'd much rather be in far Northern California, say 20 miles inland to avoid the tsuami risk, than in Wyoming. But within reasonable walking distance of LA is probably a bad idea.
 Quoting: AlkaliDesert

Agreed. Anything south of The Grapevine is essentially a desert which depends on artificially conducted water. They even tried to steal our water from the Columbia River, and they take a lot of water and electricity from Arizona. If TSHTF, people will run out of water before they run out of food. It DOES rain in SoCal, but the rain is undependable and apt to come down all at once (creating flash floods) and then nothing for a long time. And every year we see the hills catching on fire. Plus it's "earthquake central".

Besides, according to a lot of posters here, it won't BE there anymore!

minus Detroit and Dearbornpakistan....

Michigan is pretty good, we are close to Canada and have a lot of fresh water, fish, hunting, lots of guns per capita, lots Christian churchs of brotherly love and share, militia, and Faygo Rootbeer.

i have to take care of my family and my church peeps,

in my state of grace, I will make my stand here.

Wyoming is the earthly equivalent of Mars.Good luck with the wind and snow.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27815245

I don't live in Wyoming, but it IS a fairly safe choice as long as you have a DEPENDABLE means of heating. Lot's of wide open and remote land there.

My own choice, is where there is a super dependable source of rainwater, nowhere near (or downwind) of a military target, and nowhere near ANY metro area. Somewhere with plenty of fresh and salt water seafood, and plenty of native flora and fauna.

Some place that doesn't get too cold in the winter, and doesn't get hot in the summer. Someplace that you can survive, even with no heating in the winter, if you had to. And doesn't get hot enough to require air conditioning in the summer.

A place that is far off the beaten path, and too remote to be threatened by waves of STUPID people who waited until the SHTF to flee the cities.

Been here for 18 years. Don't want to see people who decided to wait until the last minute, flooding in.

Nevada: heat, lack of water, and highly visible roadways make the Silver State inhospitable to post-apocalyptic survivors. Good luck finding water, and there is barely enough to eat if one is forced to forage.

Since we in Las Vegas are also host to three major strike targets (Hoover Dam, Nellis AFB, and the Strip) there is a prety good chance that there won't actually be many survivors in some catastrophe scenarios.

If you are trying to escape in a crisis, there is not much chance of it. We have few exits from the state, and all are heavily-monitored. The roads are all visible from miles away, meaning you would become easy prey for bandits and govt. stooges should you wish to flee without climbing impassable mountains.

The state of new jack city aka Gotham which includes the boswash corridor.

why .... if you have to ask you won't live more than an hour when the power goes out.
 Quoting: Mr. Toppit

I want to know what everyone thinks are the worst ststes to be in. In my opinion, they are New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Texas, California.
Texas is probably onwe of the worst because of it's proximity to Mexico, when it goes down, there will be thousands of Mexicans coming up here and scavenging, not to mention all the illegals currently here, that and there's 22 million people here.
 Quoting: Uke

New York? No. Much of NY State is rural and mountainous, which could be beneficial, and it borders Canada, which could be beneficial too.

New York state is not New York city.

Florida would likely be the worst for obvious reasons. Not least is a high percentage of "felons", shall we say. Along with its geographical considerations.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29298450

Only really northern NY has good access to Canada. Eastern NY is blocked off by 2 large lakes and unless you're an experienced sailor with a good boat I'd stay clear of them, especially in the winter. A storm with 15 mph winds could be 30mph winds on the lake and should the boat capsize you could die in minutes because of hypothermia.

Going through land won't work out much better, between Buffalo, US Niagara, Cnd. Niagara, and St. Catherines in an area of about equal to one big city. Not to mention in a SHTF scenario you could have millions of people trying to cross that narrow passageway. Northern New York is a pretty good though, there are no cities even close to 100,000 on the boarder and all you got is one river in the way.

Re: What is the Worst State(s) to be in When TSHTF?
interesting question. many years ago, we had a small article in the local rag about a new property down at Currumbin in SE QLD. the dude was ex nasa/miltary (i can't remember which one), but i found it interesting in that he ran the numbers, and that was the safest place when tshtf. photos didn't reveal the exact location, but it was a bunker style house half submerged with the days surveillance and a clear zone all around the tree line. another interesting point, is i did some e-learning stuff back in feb, for a company from israel (mongrels failed to pay properly), but they moved a kabutz (S?) there, and ran an immigration company and a vocational training company so people can stay on educational visas indefinitely. (she was ex mosad/army, as are all israelies and got her money from working for motorola encoding).... hmmmmmmm....
It's life as we know it, but only just.

After reading all of this I think the best state to be in is adaptability.

The worst state to be in is dependence, but I don't see a lot of independence anywhere. People are trying, but the life support system of interstates and Mil. bases is so ingrained in this country.

Start living like we're already in a third world state and well be getting close to what we need to do.
