Anonymous Coward User ID: 28824257 United States 01/14/2013 09:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The US government has issued a new report that recommends blocking access to popular websites during a pandemic outbreak in order to preserve internet bandwidth for investors, day traders and securities clearing house operations. The concern is that a pandemic would cause too many people to stay at home and download YouTube videos and porn, hogging all the internet bandwidth and blocking throughput for investment activities, thereby causing a stock market meltdown. Quoting: <<TIMEWATCHER>> Right. The Obama planned-and-orchestrated economic collapse will be caused by the flu. How stupid do they think we are? |

The concern is that a pandemic would cause too many people to stay at home and download YouTube videos and porn, hogging all the internet bandwidth and blocking throughput for investment activities, thereby causing a stock market meltdown. Quoting: <<TIMEWATCHER>> This isn't an April Fool's joke. It's all based on a public report issued by the Government Accounting Office (GAO), available from their website at [link to www.gao.gov] In this article, I'm going to explain how a pandemic outbreak could theoretically bring down Wall Street. But to get to that, you'll first need to find out what the GAO said in its curious report (see below). Parts of this article are presented as satire, but the underlying facts quoted here are all true and verifiable (links are provided to all sources). This report in question is entitled, "GAO Report to Congressional Requesters, INFLUENZA PANDEMIC" and includes this subtitle: Key Securities Market Participants Are Making Progress, but Agencies Could Do More to Address Potential Internet Congestion and Encourage Readiness. As the report explains: In a severe pandemic, governments may close schools, shut down public transportation systems, and ban public gatherings such as concerts or sporting events. In such scenarios, many more people than usual may be at home during the day, and Internet use in residential neighborhoods could increase significantly as a result of people seeking news, entertainment, or social contact from home computers. Concerns have been raised that this additional traffic could lead to congestion on the Internet that would significantly affect businesses in local neighborhoods, such as small doctors' offices or business employees attempting to telework by connecting to their employers' enterprise networks. Can Hulu, Twitter and porn destroy Wall Street? To translate this concern of the GAO, what they're saying is that if too many people stay home and use the internet, Wall Street might not be able to function smoothly. Therefore, in order to protect Wall Street (because as you know, our government does everything possible to bail out Wall Street), the feds might need to shut down some popular websites. But where, exactly, is all the bandwidth usage really coming from? Twitter uses virtually no bandwidth, given that it's a short, text-based messaging service. Text articles also don't use up much bandwidth. In terms of clogging the internet's "series of tubes" (to use a hilarious term coined by a U.S. Senator), the real culprits are videos. While a Twitter text message might be less than 1k in size, a typical video is 350MB, or roughly 350,000 times larger than a Twitter message. So where, exactly, are people getting video downloads? The most popular non-porn video destinations today are MySpaceTV.com, YouTube.com, LiveLeak.com, Yahoo Video and Hulu.com. But as it turns out, even these highly popular websites may not account for most internet traffic. P2P traffic uses the most bandwidth Learn more: [link to www.naturalnews.com] .......RIGHT, or people could start reading through posts and find out that: 1. there isn't any pandemic 2. the vaccines are killing people God has no enemies! The plan, to stop people from overwhelming needed communications with useless things in an emergency makes sense, doesn't it? Yes, it could be part of an evil overlords plan... But think about it, the people in power don't need to do things like that. They have far more elegant ways to grab control if they want it. The internet is part of what's keeping people calm and sedate. It would be a vast mistake to throttle it, if it wasn't needed at the moment. Over the years I've come to the conclusion that there is no massive plan to control the world. If there, by some strange happenstance, is, then the people involved are very poor at their jobs. People have been talking about population control and the coming tyranny for nearly sixty years. What do we have so far? Some one making us pay high taxes and wear seat belts? (Agreed, not great things, but it isn't a mandatory butt rape session on Sunday either. Put things in perspective.) So yes, useless entertainments might be sacrificed in order to try and keep the economy going during a time of crisis. So? that's instantly evil? It sounds about like what I'd recommend in the same situation, to tell the truth. |

It sounds about like what I'd recommend in the same situation, to tell the truth. The truth is that there are multiple plans to increase control over the world, and most are implemented ineptly. There are also huge numbers of those that refuse to be controlled easily, and of those who are - most are zombies. The result is a gratifying mix of ineptness and infighting that has kept us as free as we are so far. |

Do they really think everyone using the internet will make it lag? there is NO way this is true. There are many things that eat up bandwidth, visiting websites is not one of them... MarkinAZ User ID: 20006444 United States 01/14/2013 11:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Don't these idiots who have authored this dubious report make some allowance for the thousands of adults who, if stuck at home because of a severe pandemic flu outbreak would either: A. Choose to work from home using their HS Internet access from home and a VPN connection to their corporate systems. B. Be sick in bed, and not on the internet at all until recovering. C. Since these same people would obviously NOT be utilizing their corporate Internet Bandwidth at their offices, some (if not all) of that bandwidth would then remain available for use within the residential communities near to (within commuting distance) of their offices as it does now. When huge multi-node computer systems are virtually shut down at night, because of business being closed, etc., knowledge workers are no longer sucking down available bandwidth for VOIP Phone systems, their voice and video conferencing at work, and general use of applications housed on a centralized server or "cloud" server farm someplace that requires bandwidth in various degrees to access the applications and keep them running - as would take place during the business day. People who live in outlying suburbs often see their bandwidth at home slow down to a crawl (no matter the speed of the link they purchase from the cable company or telco or sat provider) about 3:30 PM as kids get out of school and head home making contact with their friends via smart phone, texting, and video chats, etc. Then at 5 PM or 5:30 they see their bandwidth return to "normal" levels as the offices in the nearby commercial centers/cities/industrial parks/factories/etc., go offline, thus making their total bandwith (not being presently used) available for shared or pooled access use within the overall community. Sounds to me like these "experts" do not have a serious clue about how modern network design and implementation already allows for this balance and rebalancing of the bandwidth available and automatically resolves the problems if they become too severe and start to cause outages, etc. |

The only "trading firms" that use the Internet are fucking retail investor sites like E-Trade. Retail investors account for less than 2% of the daily volume on any given exchange. The other 98% is by investment firms, trading firms, banks and the like that all use private network lines that do not go over the Internet. |
