MAKE YOUR OWN MEALS IN A JAR FOR PREPPING> | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 32715303 United States 01/27/2013 07:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Saw this. Good idea but you have to buy the expensive dried foods to put these together. I think it would be more practical to keep your long term food in the cans for storage and make up your own canning from foods available at grocery stores. Besides, clean water may be an issue, if you can your own soups and meals the water is included. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 15740069 United States 01/27/2013 08:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dehydrated and Freeze dried preps are great for foot travel. Because they are so light and all you have to do is add hot water to reconstitute. But it is more expensive then normal canning because you have to dry the food out with a food dehydrator or a very strong freezer. That takes alot of electricity. More then canning does. But it does have its place in your preps for your 72 hour bag. You dont want to carry a can of chili when you can carry a dehydrated bag of chili. Because all you have to do is boil some water and you have a meal. I like to keep a water filter in my bag instead. That way I can always get clean water from any source and use it to reconstitute my food. Doing it this way you keep your pack weight down. Because instead of carrying heavy cans that always have water in them you can get water along the way and add it to your dried food. The downside is the extra work or cost to get the food dried. A Solar Dehydrator would be a good solution if you are willing to put in all the work. However with this you would have to do the work only on sunny days. |

Meaning property with own well with aux. hand pumping capability. Stocked up on rice, beans, bullets. Canned goods. MREs (last resort... not healthy at all with all of the hydrogenated oils, corn syrup). I do have a stainless steel pressure cooker and have considered doing some canning with it. But it is easier to buy canned goods.... as we won't be going anywhere ITSHTF. We're already, "there." We have Blue Runner beans (yum) available where I'm at. I eat 'em all times of the year because they are about as good as beans get in a can. |

Besides, clean water may be an issue, if you can your own soups and meals the water is included. Not necessarily, you can dehydrate foods yourself. In fact, they are an important aspect of prepping. The main issue is fat can't be dehydrated. It goes rancid. That means you cannot live on dehydrated food solely. You could however make up meals as the base of a dish and then add to it. Example: make a stew this way, but add jerky and some oil to get the necessary fat. A lot of people buy frozen food and then the food is prechopped up and so makes prep time shorter for dehydrating it. It comes on sale and you then buy and dehydrate then, much as you would from the garden as it comes in. A prolific youtube prepper went on an extended camping trip and ate all dehydrated food and felt the drop in calories. It packs very light, so if you use it for that reason, take some oil along. Quoting: anonymous super coward 31530233 I've eaten a lot of Mountain House and most of it is quite good. The Beef Stroganoff and Rice & Chicken are excellent. Just an idea here. Buy the foil packs and get them cached in pvc pipes for emergency. If you don't own a water filter, buy one ASAP. I own 4 of them. |

They dehydrate their own home cooked meals and they Vacuum seal them. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] |

I like the foods from Emergency Essentials, also have made my own jerky from ground beef and have a screen dehydrator for outdoors and works great. At least in drier climates. Don'tBeAfraid User ID: 32113282 United States 01/27/2013 02:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Because some people may try to dehydrate meat with fat and not realize that it will spoil, see: [link to www.wikihow.com] " Use lean pieces of meat for dehydrating; fat will go rancid and spoil the meat faster. Put the meat in the freezer for 30 minutes before slicing; this will make it easier to cut. Meat can be dehydrated using a food dehydrator; just follow the appliance directions." It is possible to can lard and so you can have both dehydrated meals in jars and then add that lard back in. See my sig for a detailed method of canning lard. It's not for beginners. If you tried to dehydrate ground beef, then you'd drain off the fat and lose all those valuable calories, and that might be the difference in starving or not. Anonymous Coward User ID: 33041855 United States 01/27/2013 02:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get a butane stove. 10 to 20 bucks at Asian markets. You will pay more at an online sporting goods site, and more still at a survivalist-type site. Nope.... Asian markets. For some decades, now. Butane, because it is safe to use inside. Refills are inexpensive, usually sold in a 4-pack. One can lasts quite a bit. Get one if you don't have one. You'll remember this post and thank me. You will. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33061244 United States 01/27/2013 03:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | as dried food gets older and older it gets harder and harder. The other week, I bought some stuff at the health food store and it takes two days of boiling it to soften it. There were beans, once, that no matter how long you boiled them they never softened. Theyare even no good for salads (to hard for your teeth). If you grind them into a dust i guess they would be ok. |

Get a stainless steel pressure cooker. *NOT aluminum. Bite the bullet and get stainless steel. A pot of beans in 22 minutes.... A huge savings of energy/resource expenditure. Great for rice as well.... And a whole bunch of things besides.... *IF you're doing.. or are going to be doing... large scale canning.... Get a LARGE All American. They are aluminum. But that fact won't matter as you are canning. A pressure cooker is the very best way to ensure safety. Also substitutes as an autoclave for sterilizing surgical instruments. And have that med kit and be ready to stitch something up if need be. |

If you really want to get ahead of the curve, raise cuy. Hands down the best bang for buck/space/effort for a protein source. IGNORE pet shop blather about feed. In the mountains of Peru a couple just married is often presented with a pair of cuy to feed up-coming family. THEY EAT GRASS. |

I would like to find someone in my area that would like to go in half and do this. It would be cool to have a years worth of food where all you had to do is pull out a couple of jars and add water and poof! Gourmet food. I figure it would take 2 jars per family of 4 per meal. She also has soup in a bag and bread in a bag! You can have these kinds of meals to compliment canned foods, and dried foods! I grow what I can myself and would like to get with other people with the same thinking, but so far where I live no luck. While the ingredients are somewhat expensive for freeze-dried foods, the machine to freeze-dry the food is Really Expensive! I would like to have my own machine! |
