 Quoting: tandym

Could be. If 2012 DA14 has triggered the recent solar flares directed at it (and thus us) over past few days and that in turn influencing quakes.

It now shows, that there were 3 huge EQ hitting.

7.9 depth 29 km
7.1 depth 10 km
7.1 depth 10 km

within 1 hour.

That seems quite odd to me.

that 8 was a foreshock
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33508203

I'm afraid that's right. The swarm built up and built up from lots of lower 5 pointers over many quake close to M6, then all the lower 6 pointers came followed by higher 6 pointers. Then the 'main shock' of M8, a M7 and still, it doesn't stop shaking. There are still M6 every few hours.

There is a law after which the real main shock of a very large megathrust quake is mostly 1 to 1.2 magnitudes stronger than the strongest foreshock ... Let's hope the M8 really was the main shock, but I doubt that.

the whole northern portion of the Australian plate is putting ENORMOUS pressure on areas north of it. It WILL win, it will finally break loose somewhere, maybe Santa Cruz, but if not here, somewhere else along the north of the plate

In addition: The Tohoku quake 2011 had a 7.2 and a 7.9 foreshock before the 9.0/9.1 main shock. So, indeed 1.1 to 1.2 magnitudes stronger than the strongest foreshock.

The biggest recorded quake, the 1960 Valdivia quake in Chile, had a 7.5 and a 8.3 foreshock before the 9.5 main shock hit.

Now we had a 8.0 and a 7.0 ... damned

It's obvious that there's movement, but do we know anything else? Did the sea floor drop? What types of plates are in and around there? Is something "stuck" and its movements are trying to break free something else?

Thank you! Just seems like something is jammed up on the sea floor, and it's causing the other plates to jockey for sea floor position.
