Nice solar eclipse. Lol

SDO ECLIPSE SEASON BEGINS: Twice every year, around the time of the equinoxes, Earth can pass directly between the Sun and NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), producing a series of beautiful eclipses from the point of view of the spacecraft. SDO's vernal eclipse season began this weekend, producing a partial blackout of the sun:

I'm on my iPhone, clicked on the YouTube link, when finished watching, opened Internet back up and instead of loading the GLP page I had been on, a site about Judaism and reincarnation opened up! WTF?!

Weirdness indeed!

This is exactly what I thought. Why would the object retract? Seems to defy the laws of outerspace....

Imagine an odd shaped object gently rolling through space. We saw the edge, almost like what a tire rolling by a camera would look like. If we could only see the tire as a black out silhouette, it would appear to retract.

Something drifted by the camera. Given the amount of edge blur I feel it was closer to the camera then the Sun.

Re: Whoa!! Sun was eclipsed by a HUGE unidentified Object March 2, 2013
I go with lens obstruction.

Now, what caused it is curious, yet, as it does not appear to have any clearly defined margin, I highly doubt this is a potential doom scenario.

On the other hand, this all depends on the nature of what caused this 'veiling' effect, which does not appear to be anywhere near the Sun.

----

BTW: Did anyone see the recent Scifi movie "The End of the World?"

It was extremely funny. As doom movie go, this one had a very GLP community sort of atmosphere to it.

The entire script played like a thread, as people with absolutely no advanced background in solutions wound up saving the world nonetheless, hugely by just recalling scenes from doom movies they were huge fans of.

It was brilliant, even though you had to overlook certain anomalies.

That's what the video reminded me of...[almost] an approaching wave, as in the movie.

Re: Whoa!! Sun was eclipsed by a HUGE unidentified Object March 2, 2013
March 2, 2013 saw the first eclipse of the SDO Spring 2013 Eclipse Season. It was a partial eclipse, blocking only the upper left part of the Sun. Here are images from two AIA channels showing the eclipse at around 0715 UTC yesterday. The 193 image on the left shows the highly structured corona with the Earth passing by. The right shows the 1600 bandpass a few minutes later. The 1600 image has a much more uniform flow on the surface of the Sun and a much sharper (though still a little fuzzy) edge of the Earth. There is also a crescent of darkness over the top of the Sun that is not related to the eclipse.
The 2013 Eclipse Season continues until March 26. This season also has a lunar transit on March 11, from 1135-1243 UTC, a momentum management burn at 1901 UTC on March 13, and a station keeping burn at 2339 UTC on March 20.

Looks like March is going to be a busy month!

Unfortunately AC can't change the title - so I prefere option #2.

But I'm sure, that at least another 20 "Mysterous Object in Front of Sun" threads will pop up in March.
