Superman's logo explained
It's an 'S'. It stands for 'Superman'. Because that's what Shuster and Siegel named him in 1938. Because he was a super version of a man.

Then in like 2010 when David Goyer was writing the remake, he figured this guy writing a giant 'S' on his chest seemed kind of silly and narcissistic, and they were going for realism, so they changed it into the symbol for 'hope' because that seemed a bit more plausible.
