Does anyone Remember a Time when the Hollywood Music Industry Produced more Crap?
I'm asking this question because I am a relatively young man and I am finding that more and more of the mainstream musicians and band are producing crappy music based on shallow concepts using technology to bridge the gap between the singer's ability and an acceptable level of quality. I think back to the groups I grew up with back in the 90's like S Club 7, Backstreet Boys, even Green Day and I am finding it harder and harder to find a group out of Hollywood they compare to. I can find groups that are even better than them, but they are independent of Hollywood.

The other thing I have noticed is that with the possible exception of one group out of Canada none of these groups are really marketed for young people. As for that one group hardly anyone outside of Canada even knows who they are. And even in Canada they are not that well known. I guess the best person really marketed for young people in America is Jesse Mcartney which I think is really sad.

I am older than you, when I was in High School I went to many concerts. The Who, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Heart, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, The Police etc etc.
I would rather be strapped to a massive amplifier with claws down a chalkboard playing than listen to todays noise.

I'm not saying they are good, but you really think Justin Bieber is better?

I actually worked security at a BSB concert a few years ago...way past their prime...they actually put on a decent show....not my cup of tea though.

Justin Beiber is this generations poster boy. Every generation has them.

I was attempting to list the biggest bands of that time, not my personal favourites. But I still think the general quality of their music is better than today's.

yup. There is a ton of garbage from every decade of music. Obviously we only remember the good stuff so it seems as though it was better "back in the day".

Autotune. U can take a fairly attractive face with a willingness to shock and assign them a "sound". I have gone above and beyond to teach my children the difference between art and the money making propaganda machine. Some of this stuff has a catchy beat and people call it music. There is very little if any individuality in todays media. Movies are included. Look at all of the cgi remakes. They are just out of ideas. And it is a business. Lets face it... It is easier to find some kid willing to sell his soul for fame with no desire in the creative process. As long as they get fame, money and sex. That is much easier than actually producing quality media.

Janine u r much too pretty and young looking to have experienced those bands haha. I mean i would not have guessed it by looking at ur pic but good for you! Those are memories that are becoming harder to come by. Glad you got the opportunity to see such classics. I have an extensive list of my own.
All morons hate it when you call them a moron.

People always think something's all true.

It's funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they'll do practically anything you want them to.

Perhaps, but what I am most concerned about is the moral message being given by music today. In general it seems to be that it doesn't matter what you do or say as long as you like. A few years ago I took that message to heart and did some real damage to my relationship with my parents.

Funny I used to think of Shaggy as a good example of what is wrong with the music industry. Now he seems like a diamond in the rough by comparison.

I see what you're saying. An example that I noticed when I was younger is rap music. The gangsta / thug archetype and lifestyle has fucked up so much shit. It is literally a mind virus that infected a lot of kids, not just black kids.

I actually listened to that stuff when I was younger, thought it was the coolest shit ever. I was amazed how it literally transformed some of my friends in the way they talk, dress and act. I had to laugh at them because it was so ridiculous how they emulated their favorite Hip Hop artists.

I remember when I was pretty young and musicals came out like 'Oklahoma' and 'South Pacific'. I thought they were real crappy. Now, like 50 years later I sometimes here myself sing some of those songs to myself and I think there was some really good music written and performed over the years that I just wasn't into at the time.

What i have to laugh about is how people will mis-sing words to songs, wrongly placed in movies or on mainstream radio. One example is third eye blind, semi charmed life. It is alway like a shopping montage or a mother and daughter running through town just due to the beat and rhythm. But the truth is that the song is about shooting meth and having vulgar sex then crashing. There is very little thought put into art and even less in interpreting it. Still good for a laugh though.

For another example, why is a song about giving handjobs in a preteen movie?

it's our own fault.we have the technology to produce our own music, and we have the medium to market and distribute it.

Well it's a slippery slope, as society goes down so will the music, and they influence each other.

The last concert I attended was last October just 5 miles from my house. I saw Gary Wright and Al Stewart at the Silver Reef Casino. They are old yes but...they LOVE to perform! I got to meet them after. I saw Peter Gabriel a few years ago.
