Brit scientists send balloon into the stratosphere and it comes back carrying alien life forms.
British scientists believe they have found evidence alien life after sending a balloon to the edge of space.

The team of scientists sent a balloon 27km into the stratosphere and captured small biological organisms they say can only have come from space.

The group, headed up by astrobiologist Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, claims the 'seeds of life' have been transported between planets by passing meteors.

Professor Wickramasinghe, 74, and his team from the University of Sheffield sent a specially designed balloon into the atmosphere above Chester during the annual Perseid meteor shower.

The balloon was carrying sterile microscope slides which were only exposed to the atmosphere at heights of 27km.

When the balloon fell back down to Earth the scientists discovered microscopic aquatic algae on the microscope slides - which they say can only be alien life forms.

OP, not to rain on your parade, but Dr. Wickramasinghe has been talking about this for decades. I recall the first survey was done in the 90s. I have had the honor of exchanging e-mails with him, and have read most of his very well written articles. He has been published in Nature many times. Still, you will find the so called Shill posters in GLP think "Dr. Wick" is a crank, from what I disgress strongly. He also is under strong criticism because of his ascertainment of having found microfossils, and even recovered live ones, in a recently recovered meteorite (Jan 2012). The microfossils are conspicuous diatoms. It's a fascinating topic, and one that will keep facing strong criticism, to no avail, as it provides proof that life is the constant in the universe, and not the exception.

DNA sequencing and predictions of the cosmic theory of life

Abstract The theory of cometary panspermia, developed
by the late Sir Fred Hoyle and the present author argues
that life originated cosmically as a unique event in one of
a great multitude of comets or planetary bodies in the Universe.
Life on Earth did not originate here but was introduced
by impacting comets, and its further evolution was
driven by the subsequent acquisition of cosmically derived
genes. Explicit predictions of this theory published in 1979–
1981, stating how the acquisition of new genes drives evolution,
are compared with recent developments in relation to
horizontal gene transfer, and the role of retroviruses in evolution.
Precisely-stated predictions of the theory of cometary
panspermia are shown to have been verified.
All great truths begin as Blasphemies.

Cosmic panspermia irrefutable evidence.
 Quoting: Ford Prefect

Um...not 'irrefutable evidence'. There's a claim.

The only 'irrefutable evidence' would be a thorough genetic examination.

For one thing, it's pretty suspect for a 'scientist' to say 'we found microbes on our slide....they can ONLY HAVE COME FROM SPACE!'. Especially when it is absolutely plausible that volcanic eruptions deposit microbes in the stratosphere. Or that his method of having the slide only gather material once in the stratosphere wasn't foolproof.

I am personally interested in the theory of panspermia but this scientist clearly has a dog in the race as he's spent his career trying to prove it.

Now he says 'hey, we sent a balloon up with a slide and it came back with microbes on it, they can ONLY HAVE COME FROM SPACE!!! just trust me ok?'

Conspiracy theorists always seem to lose all their skepticism and clarity of thought when they are told what they want to hear...

Re: Brit scientists send balloon into the stratosphere and it comes back carrying alien life forms.
this does not prove alien life at all. I don't know why the experimenter makes such a bold statement, probably to get the press.

He sent the balloon 27km up. This is still in the earth's atmosphere. The furthest layers of earth's atmosphere extend to atleast 600km, though doubtless life could exist there as we know it.

Take this short description of the stratosphere...

"Within this layer, temperature increases as altitude increases (see temperature inversion); the top of the stratosphere has a temperature of about 270 K (−3°C or 29.6°F), just slightly below the freezing point of water.[2] The stratosphere is layered in temperature because ozone (O3) here absorbs high energy UVB and UVC energy waves from the Sun and is broken down into atomic oxygen (O) and diatomic oxygen (O2). "

According to this the stratosphere is much warmer then the layers of atmosphere immediately below it.

i have no doubt it's possible that experiment opened at 27km up and life ended up on those microscopic slides. But to conclude from that, that it's automatically from space.. as opposed to something that literally lives in the stratosphere is a hell of a leap.

Lately we have been finding life in places we never expected on earth, in volcanic vents, 10s of kms into solid rock, in glaciers, in salt beds.

27km up is not space... it ain't even close to space, but the idea that life also thrives in our stratosphere is thrilling. What a beautiful planet we live on.

Re: Brit scientists send balloon into the stratosphere and it comes back carrying alien life forms.
The only way he could say 'they have to come from space', is if it is known that no earth organisms exist at 27 kilometers high and higher.

If they do come from space, there must be a literal pea soup of them all over the place, for some to have landed on a little glass slide.

Sounds highly dubious to me.
