Kansas Boy Forced to Remove Little Free Library From His Yard
Spencer Collins, 9, loves to read. The idea of sharing his love of books with his neighbors thrills him. So with the help of his parents, he set up a Little Free Library in their yard in Leawood, Kansas.

But the town of Leawood decided the birdhouse-sized library was an illegal structure and the family was ordered to remove it.

The family moved the Little Free Library into their garage. But they are looking to take the issue with City Hall, reported ABC affiliate KMBC.

The little library, which was made by the boy’s grandfather, was capable of holding a few books. Like the Little Free Libraries across the country, it had a “take a book, leave a book” note taped on its door. The bookshelf sat next to a bench on the family's front yard, which was intended to provide a spot for readers to enjoy their books.

"When we got home from vacation, there was a letter from the city of Leawood saying that it was in code violation and it needed to be down by the 19th or we would receive a citation," Spencer's mother, Sarah Collins told KMBC.

The City of Leawood bans buildings that aren't attached to homes. Since the library was a free standing structure in the family's front yard, it was considered illegal. The city has received two complaints regarding the library, according to Richard Coleman, Leawood's director of community development.

Who are the two miserable fucks who complained about it? It's such a cute, tidy little free standing box. How could that possibly be a 'building'?

This is why I got out of the city a long time ago. If you're lucky, you've got decent people around you who will leave you alone. Most of the time however, your neighbors are assholes who will rat your ass out for anything and everything. Could be a grudge between the parents, could be jealousy, could be some old busybodies just making a point to be jerks. Could be snobs worried about their 'property values' or.... there could be no real complaints at all and the city just used that as an excuse.

The issue is probably that some stranger could walk into that garage, get accidentally but heinously hurt (say an ax fell on his or her head), and sue to little boy's family for a million dollars. It's to protect the family from their own naivete.

Guess the folks in Kansas don't need any stinkin' community.

Three years ago Todd Bol came up with an idea to remember his mother, a teacher who had loved books and encouraged people to read. At his home in Hudson, Wisc., he built a box, made it waterproof and filled it with books. It looked like a miniature one-room schoolhouse, with a sign underneath that said “Free Book Exchange.” Bol put it on a post outside of his house and invited neighbors to take a book, and return a book.

That’s when something happened Bol says he never could have imagined.

“People of all ages, men, women, kids came up and just loved the library,” he said. “They got excited and they started coming up to me saying, ‘I’ll build one, do

Coming to a town near you,
A few years back in my City the council tried to ban lemonade stands and feeding the homeless... all because of some stupid food safety law.. by those standards a "pot luck" would be a violation or even a BBQ at the city park.

nothing but govt overreach and intrusion. Do these council folks have nothing better to do then harass outstanding citizens for doing good deeds and going above and beyond the call to community....

i.e. why not speak out on the hoards of teens that wander the streets , vandalizing property ?

I hope the Public of this city are outraged and boycott the entire city hall until they leave this young man alone.
